Bar shampoo - anyone ever tried it?

I bought some bar shampoo and bar conditioner to try and reduce the plastic that comes into my house. Used it today for the first time - it did a good job.

Anyone else tried it?

Used it for a long time. I have seen no difference in the condition or appearance of my hair. It's a "no brainer" as far as I am concerned.

Years ago for a long trip I bought a Lush bar shampoo and found it great .
It smelt very nice as well .
I can't recall buying a bar conditioner , but I probably did .
I'll certainly buy again .

Yes, DD bought me some but not from this country.

Am I allowed to ask which brand, Luckygirl?
I won't buy Lush, it smells far too strong for me.

I got a free box from gruum and added a wonky selection and i have found it all really nice and I have pretty sensitive skin

Been using bar shampoo for a long time. It’s lasts forever and ever.

I converted to bar shampoo a while back to make things easier when travelling (haven't travelled for 4 years now) and to save on plastic bottles in the bathroom. Great stuff. not sure if it works out cheaper but a bar lasts ages. I've never used conditioner, but I've never seen solid conditioner here in Germany.

Beware the different kinds, though. There is "hair soap" and "bar shampoo" - the shampoo is better, apparently.

Here's one explanation. Hair soap is OK if you rinse out with vinegar or lemon juice afterwards, it says.

I've been using Faith in Nature for nearly a year now. It's very good and lasts for ages - I wash my hair twice a week, one wash, and a bar lasts for months.

I haven't tried bar conditioner yet - some time back I accidentally ordered two huge bottles of the stuff and still working my way through bottle one!

I use a coconut one that is £1 in Savers. Leaves my hair looking great. My hairdresser told me that there is no need to condition after shampooing every time as it just leaves a residue that weighs your hair down. So now I only condition occasionally. I use a bottled conditioner a though.

Yes, I've switched to bar only. The 1st one I tried was quite drying, but there are plenty to choose from and I've had a few good ones.

I have had two Faith in Nature bars, and two Funky Soap shampoo bars, but now I have an Eco Warrior shampoo bar.
When I first switched to a shampoo bar my hairdresser remarked upon the good condition of my hair.
I don't think I'll go back to a plastic bottle.

I get mine from Bee Haven Bodycare. She uses her own bees to produce various products.

I have always thought it would be difficult to use on long hair. Mine is below my shoulders and I use ‘normal’ shampoo and conditioner. Anyone know?

I’ve used bar soap for years now - I’ve tried three different brands and none have disappointed. My hair’s short and fine, GSM, but I can’t think why it wouldn’t work well on long hair too.

Maggiemaybe Sun 11-Sept-22 17:41:06

Whoops, bar shampoo not bar soap (though that’s good as well!). grin

Davida1968 Sun 11-Sept-22 18:03:12

I've used bar shampoo for some years now. Also I find that a weekly cider apple vinegar rinse (very cheap & easy to make at home) helps too. I buy shampoo bars online from The Good Soap (their's can be used as ordinary soap too) or from Friendly Soap. Lovely stuff, no plastics, & no nasty chemicals! DH uses it too.

We’ve been using bar shampoo for a few years now - couldn’t go back to conventional shampoo. Hair condition is really good

PollyDolly Sun 11-Sept-22 18:19:05

Yes, I use both all the time now. Started using it to reduce my use of plastics and have never looked back.

Luckygirl3 Sun 11-Sept-22 18:38:50

Wish I'd tried it before!

Barmeyoldbat Sun 11-Sept-22 18:40:12

I also had three free samples from Gruum and found them really good. I am going order some more this week and Mr B loves the shampoo/body wash bar as he can do a complete wash of everything with just one bar. Also going to try the toothpaste powder

Casdon Sun 11-Sept-22 19:16:59

I agree with the principle, but I can’t get on with it, it makes my head itch. I’ve tried three different ones. I normally use a mild shampoo, Weleda suits my hair, and I put the containers in the plastic recycling after.

Blondiescot Sun 11-Sept-22 19:20:11

I couldn't get on with it either, so I'm glad to learn I'm not the only one. I felt my hair got really greasy really quickly after using it.

Auntieflo Sun 11-Sept-22 19:26:55

Interested in your comment Barmeyoldbat, about your DH using his shampoo as a complete body wash.
I have been doing this for ages when washing my hair.
Seems sensible.

I’ve used bar shampoo for years, various brands and they’ve all been fine. The bar conditioner I’ve had to give up on as it’s not ‘strong’ enough on my wiry hair, which frizzes horribly. I use a mask to tame it.
