Wedding outfit for 80 year old guest?

Has anyone any ideas? One of my grandsons is getting married next August, by which time I`ll be 80. I`m short and fat, with limited mobility, and not what you`d call a stylish person. I like bright colours and pastels, not black or dark colours, although I know they`d be more slimming.

So pleased you revisited this thread, hope you manage to load the picture. Perhaps a link to the sell web page would work?

Hellogirl1 Fri 30-Jun-23 11:59:54

Nope, still not working.

The photo didn`t load, and still won`t, maybe tomorrow?

Abstracts are meant to be back in according to GD so one with an abstract pattern which would blur your shape not that it is any different to most of us. How about a midi dress with a handkerchief hem? There are lots of ones around with elasticated waists. As you use a stick I would go for a lightweight jacket/bolero plain coloured picking out one of the colours in the dress. Could you hire a hat? Instead of buying.

I think the three tops up thread are dreadful.

You look really lovely in the yellow outfit, so wear that again or use it as your examplar to buy a similar outfit, also in a zinging colour.

Aah....August.... Have a lovely time.

Kim19 Thu 29-Jun-23 18:39:33

Thank you for finishing this off. Many never do this. Very thoughtful. I was anticipating a photograph. Any chance? Irrespective, I hope you had a lovely time if the wedding has taken place.

Dragging this back up again, I thought seeing as I started it I should finish it as well. Here is what I`ve eventually bought for said wedding, plus silver sandals and bag. I just wish it would look as good on me, lol!

Mum was soft, fluff and beautiful, a bit older, just as you, when she attended her most important wedding (apart from her own).

Please don't laugh at my very good solution.

It was years ago, no Amazon, no softy fleece. I bought something close to this, she felt comfortable and looked wonderful.

Amazon: Women's slippers, swollen feet -- there are many reasonably priced, attractive slippers for swollen feet

Not fat... fluffy. smile

You look lovely in that yellow outfit ? and you’re not fat, you’re just built for comfort not for speed!

MissAdventure Fri 16-Sept-22 19:31:02

Would it be worth getting your sandals repaired and dyed?
A diy job or fin a shoemonger.

You could put a bit of detail the matches the one on your dress.

That`s problem number 2 Chocolatelovinggran, my right foot is very swollen, has been since I broke my back over 2 years ago, and I have trouble getting footwear on. I have one pair of OLD sandals which I can get on, but the velcro straps keep popping undone.

Don't forget to think about shoes- comfortable shoes will be important, and their style may give you some colour guidance.

I think yellow suits you too Hellogirl

I’m another one who would say to look for a midi dress. I’m short too and don’t like showing my legs so they are ideal. I bought a nice one in Next. It’s a turquoisey floral one with lovely loose short sleeves. I have a special occasion coming up where I’m going to wear it but also when just going out for a meal.
Hope you find something suitable ?

NotAGran55 Fri 16-Sept-22 13:54:20

A simple dress with maybe a little detail but no pattern would be great. A floaty, jacket with 3/4 length sleeves to finish it off in a colour that suits you.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Sept-22 12:21:41

My thoughts exactly CleoPanda.

CleoPanda Fri 16-Sept-22 12:00:21

What a great picture. You look lovely in yellow!
I’d go for a below the knee plain coloured dress with possibly a floaty/thin jacket that picks up the dress colour within the print or matches exactly.
You’ll look gorgeous.

MawtheMerrier Fri 16-Sept-22 11:55:42

I think a long skirt (midi on anybody else, but maxi on thee and me! ) would have the same “column effect” which is top to toe slimming with a patterned jacket for interest at upper body level.
What a lovely problem to have though!

Hellogirl1 Fri 16-Sept-22 11:52:15

This is the sort of thing I usually wear when I go out. I`m the one in yellow.

MawtheMerrier Fri 16-Sept-22 11:52:04

Hellogirl think Judi Dench - short , dare I say dumpy? She looks fabulous in trousers, and tunics, also long jackets or coats, over the trousers, sometimes with a scarf or shawl.
If you Google Judi Dench, images you may get more inspiration.
But one thing, do take advantage of the end of season sales!

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Sept-22 11:36:16

I think below the knee might be a better proportion for your height than midi or maxi. I would also suggest a dress rather than skirt and top might be more flattering, so you are all in one colour or pattern rather than 'cut in half'. Also personally, I would steer away from much of a pattern, a single colour would lengthen and slim your silhouette.

Hellogirl1 Fri 16-Sept-22 11:21:18

I`m not sure what length my clothes are, but I like below the knee, but not too far below. I`m rather liking Blossoming`s idea. I love those 3 tops that Maw showed, but although the black on cream looks posher and classier, I rather fancy the pink floral one more.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Sept-22 11:12:56

What length do you usually wear Hellogirl? I have a friend about your height who finds most skirts and dresses are too long for her. Might you feel swamped by a long dress or skirt?

Blossoming Fri 16-Sept-22 11:10:36

Hellogirl I am compact and curvy (short and plump grin). I have a couple of midi dresses that are more maxis on me. I think a plain midi or midaxi dress under one of those patterned tops recommended by Maw could look lovely, smart and entirely suitable for an August wedding.
