Dyeing nearly 100% white hair

Why don't you try cutting a small piece of hair from underneath at the back and dyeing it so see how it takes. You could just try coloured shampoo, I have recently grown out my colour and I've got white hair at the front and just salt and pepper at the back and I use John Freida 'Grey Defy' shampoo so my white hair just looks blonde which fades nicely into the brown hair at the back.

Probably best to go to a hairdresser!

Yes, I’m inclined to agree with SuzieHi, at least for the first time. He or she will be able to advise you properly as they will be able to take into account the type of hair you have, be it thick, thin, coarse, fine, frizzy etc, and from that assess how a colour might take.

Why not buy the products that wash out. Superdrug do a good one. Washes out after 8 washes.

I'm white too, and the hairdresser said to take any colour, I'd have to have my hair bleached first. I used to bleach my hair as a kid and lost all shine, it ruins your hair.

Original hair colour when young, deep brown. Faded to blonde, at which point it used to successfully paint on permanent streaks with a paintbrush and it took, so I know I can do it DIY and it looks OK ...

BUT now it is almost white it didnt take, and neither did those 6 to 8 weeks dyes.

and I'm wondering if Razzamatazz 's point is the one here, ie there is something (weird) about the hair cells in white hair. Its dry and not very thick anymore and a def no to bleach.

So I will ask hairdresser next time, but in the meantime rather charmed by the chalks for a bit of fun. I will consult my DiL and 6yr old "expert" DGD....

I have solid white hair. My hairdresser foils/balayages bleaches, then she tones light blonde on the washed foils. Could use pink, caramel, or any other soft color.

FTR, not my hair, but the picture she works from and mine looks the same.

Superdrug do lots of wash in wash out colours. I use one called Colour Freedom, you buy a pastelizer with it if you want pastel pink rather than bright pink. Lasts about 5 or 6 washes. Try putting in a streak at the front to start with, They’ve also got toners in the range - I like silver blonde which gives a nice silver shine.

I have used L'Oreal Colorista washout hair colour for streaks. It lasts for 5-15 shampoos. Mine was red on my brown hair and was surprisingly vibrant, gradually fading to pink. For white hair I doubt whether you would need to leave it on for the maximum time recommended.
I found that Superdrug had a wide selection of colours and brands. Good luck, go for it!

I just describe mine as silver and use a silver mousse before drying which adds sparkle.

Mine is salt and pepper and I love it. But I'd go to a good hair dresser if I wanted to add colour, honest.

I'm certainly going to chat to my hairdresser. I've always been glad I went blonde not grey but the same product doesn't work on really white hair.

You see shysal that's what I thought when I tried. "Now my hair is REALLY white it will take quickly as less colour in it".

But it doesn't pan out like that. There is something about the hair cells in really white hair.

GrannySomerset yes in my google travels I spotted the mousse idea and it sounded rather nice to lift any dull-ness.

The other thing I came across was all this how good this purple shampoo is...slightly mystified there, all the more reason to be patient for next appointment.

White hair dries so much faster doesn’t it….or so I’ve noticed.
