It isn’t my style, but….

I just came across this rather cheerful looking 70 year old lady on Instagram. She makes most of her own clothes, from vintage fabrics. Not my style, but I do think she looks great, and colourful!

BTW - my shoes are lovely soft Josef Seibel multi coloured ankle boots! So there....

Give me eccentric every time. I'm sitting here, aged 72, wearing a baggy gold corduroy jacket and trousers - held up with a leather belt and huge gold buckle - with a rust tunic covered in huge black dots and a multi coloured scarf. People have crossed the street to tell me how much I've cheered them up with my colours. I once went out to find a clashing picture to set off my newly decorated and far too coordinated (harvest shades) kitchen in the 80's. I came back with a stylised picture of a huge blue eyed Siamese cat sat against a background of pinks and blues. Fantastic! Colour invigorates me and, as my mum used to say ''Other people hardly think about you at all unless they love you"...!

I think the woman in the OP pics looks awful, raided the dressing up box.
She can obviously dress well though as other pics show.

It’s now Dawn O ‘Porter.
She took the O from her husband, Chris O’Dowd grin

Dawn Porter ( the lady in the yellow dress) is an absolute genius with second hand clothing.

It isn’t second hand, she’s collaborated on a collection with Joanie Clothing,

I think she’s fabulous smile

Who cares what anyone thinks in Tesco Theexwife?

And I don’t think Vivienne Westwood ever pulled it off, Kandinsky, she always looks perfectly horrid!

Shinamae Sat 19-Nov-22 19:39:07

I love this, the second one not as much…..

merlotgran Sat 19-Nov-22 19:31:45

I like the first of the two pics that Maw put up.

Less is more.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 19-Nov-22 19:31:01

We should all wear what we want and what makes us feel good.

This lady looks happy and content with who she is 👏👏👏

Blossoming Sat 19-Nov-22 19:30:19

I agree Maw, she looks way younger than 70!

crazyH Sat 19-Nov-22 19:20:28

Regardless of ‘mutton dressing like lamb’ - the second outfit suits her and she looks years younger than 70.

Kadinsky 'Why can’t women dress ‘boring’ as we get older? Men do.' They can - and mostly do - but I think it's a shame to be a stick in the mud, when we can wear what we really love and dress to express ourselves. A friend wears 30s/40s fashion and it suits her happy personality.

MawtheMerrier Sat 19-Nov-22 19:05:28

Same lady - actually looking younger than with the beret , shawl and granny specs!
I do like her style!

Callistemon21 Sat 19-Nov-22 19:05:27

I bought a green beret from a Monsoon clearance bin once, Calli. That was a waste of a quid. I’ll hang onto it just in case my whole head shape miraculously changes one day and I start to look adorable in a hat, instead of like Benny Hill

I'm hoping I look more like Victoria Wood than Benny Hill in my beret, Maggiemaybe!

merlotgran Sat 19-Nov-22 18:58:24

Sorry but that style always makes me think that if you’re not sure what to wear just go through your wardrobe and stick it all on. She’s obviously talented though.

Bag lady chic!

She looks great!
It’s very Gudrun Sjoden (I’m sure I’ve spelled that wrong)

It is, Fanny. I must admit I’ve got a bit of a fascination for Gudrun stuff. I circle things in the catalogue like my DGS do with the Smyths Toys one at Christmas, just in case they come up in the sale. Two of the dresses did, and I love them, but I wouldn’t go full Gudrunista with all the accessories. Not that I could afford to anyway. smile

It’s not really a look I’d embrace for a night out with friends.

Callistemon21 Sat 19-Nov-22 16:43:05

I have a beret that a friend knitted for me.
A while ago someone said on here that older people shouldn't wear berets.

I like mine and shall continue to wear it 🙂

Wyllow3 Sat 19-Nov-22 16:33:32

I wish I had the courage to go even half the way!

Ailidh Sat 19-Nov-22 16:33:06

Very much my style, I love it! Apart from the shawl, I'm too short and booby to wear shawls successfully 🌼

Here

Yes, DD had that duvet cover and curtains in pink too.

I thought it would never wear out, it went to the charity shop in the end (only a few years ago).

If only I'd kept them, I could have made myself a new outfit.

Here

I had that bed set in pale mauve.

fairfraise Sat 19-Nov-22 13:13:24

I remember that floral pattern in a bedspread my mother had, in pink. We have just stripped 3 layers of paper here and found a 70s paper in yellow and brown and orange squares similar in colour to the dress in the first pic.

Kandinsky Sat 19-Nov-22 12:59:06

It’s not a great look on an older woman.
The ‘old eccentric’ look works on
very few people ( & you literally have to be Vivienne Westwood to pull it off )
Why can’t women dress ‘boring’ as we get older? Men do.

Theexwife Sat 19-Nov-22 12:51:10

Looks interesting in a photo with a sympathetic background, however in the middle of Tesco would cause stares and comments.
