Do you remember what your first items of make-up were? (Not sure if this has been discussed before)

When I was 15, one of my Christmas presents from my Mum and Dad was some make-up. This was a total surprise as they were both very anti make-up before that and forbade me to wear any, which I accepted, albeit grudgingly as most of my friends wore make-up out of school and I was a bit bullied because I could not join in with the latest trends.

I can still remember the names - a lipstick called "Frou Frou Pink" (can't remember the make, but it was the palest pink imaginable without being white) and a Max Factor powder compact in "Candle Glow" which was far too dark for me and made me look like an Oompah Loompah!

Does anyone else remember what their first make-up was?

My first make up was by Innoxa, haven’t seen it for years so don’t know if it’s still available. I used to put so much foundation on that I probably looked like a clown! I remember dad wasn’t happy about it and always said how good his skin was with only soap and water! It made no difference as I thought I was quite sophisticated with a face full of thick foundation.

I was a teenager in the 1950s, and started to wear lipstick when I was about fourteen. It was the only item of make-up that I used for many years. A French friend of my parents bought me a Dior lipstick, but I don’t think it was my first.

I did try eye make-up, but eyeshadow didn’t really work on my deep-set eyes, and I felt I didn’t need mascara because my eyelashes were naturally very dark.

I didn’t wear foundation or blusher until I was in my forties.

Now, in my eighties, I’m back to just lipstick.

I bought some brown mascara. (Maybelline, I believe.) My eyes swelled shut and I had to go to hospital - and stay overnight on a drip. After that, having many allergies, I tried out all cosmetics behind my ear for a few days!

Mary Quant white and black eye shadow and black liner. White for eyelids and black for eye sockets, lashings of mascara. Pale pink lipstick and nail polish. Sometimes I bought white pearlised nail polish and added some green/red /navy blue ink together.
I used tanfastic instead of foundation. The only one that didn’t result in an orange face. I later discovered false eyelashes 😳

Baby blue eyeshadow and grey Rimmel mascara. As a strawberry blonde with invisible eyelashes grey mascara was a godsend, emphasised the lashes without looking ridiculous. I remember a friend introducing me to a lipstick which was perfect, Capistrano Pink, can't remember the make, wish I could, and could buy it now.

Rosie51 it was a Max Factor lipstick

That makes sense, thank you SunshineSally. Wish I could get it now, it was a lovely colour.

My first lipstick was in the Twiggy era when black eyes and very pale lips were the trend. It was Miners The Palest. Made you look like a corpse. 😂

My friend's sister was a hand model in the twiggy era, we were already doing the Twiggy 'painted on lower lashes' before she publicised it. grin

Miners make up had some great names and colours. One of their nail polishes and matching lipstick was called Murky Mauve. I wore it and my Dad said I looked like I had smashed my nails with a hammer!

Bright blue eyeshadow and a black kohl eyeliner. It was in the 80s and I also had the Bonnie Tyler back combed hair too that was so thick with hairspray, it never moved.

I'm glad this reminds me of a very kind brother who went youth hostelling in France in the late 1940s and brought his wee sister in Scotland a present of Lentheric lipstick. It was dark red and smelled of raspberries.

We used to spit on the block mascara!!!

Did you?

Witzend Wed 11-Jan-23 10:27:06

Probably whatever was cheapest! Which back in the mid 60s was probably Miners’ - unless there was a cheaper version in Woollies.
I do remember a lipstick of palest pink, almost white.

Black mascara,i was 40 years old,and thats pretty much the only makeup i use, though i tend to use a black pencil now.

Fleurpepper Wed 11-Jan-23 10:40:03

Witzend, we use white lipstick in the mid 60s!

I bought Miners or Rimmel make up from Boots .
I think that my face was a horrid shade of orange with a tide mark .
My grandma hoovered up my false eyelashes .
I used to wear tons of mascara and paint on lower eyelashes .
I'd use pale eyeshadow under my overplucked eyebrows .
My lipstick was very pale - my grandma called it lard on the lips .
I loved pale nail polish and my nails were always short and still are .
I used to iron my hair
In the end , I gave up and went for the Marsha Hunt look .
I was a size eight in a dress and thought that I was fat !
After an overdose of crimplene I went for the full hippie look -all bells and caftans .

I loved the rimmel counter at our local chemists. I rembered buying a very pale lipstick as my first purchase. Then of course the mascara felt so grown up. My dad disapproved but I used to put it on at my friends house.

Davida1968 Wed 11-Jan-23 10:57:46

Rimmel lipstick. I think the colour was "A taste of honey " or something similar. It cost 1/6.

When I was about 14 Woman's Realm had a special offer of four lipsticks which I was allowed to send for. Within a year pink lipsticks were right out and we'd moved on to white lips and black eyes. When Biba started selling makeup my favourite look was rust eyeshadow with a matching rust lipstick.

I had a lipstick sized cover up called “Hide & Heal”. It helped to disguise my spots. Also loved my pale green eyeshadow which I thought was cool. It wasn’t !

It was the early 1960s and my first items were pink lipstick, powder and blue eyeshadow. I bought these in response to a lecture from my gran telling me I was not ugly (as I believed) but plain.

As far as I can recall she went on to say:-

"Your whats called plain. That just means ordinary, not ugly. I was a plain girl and respectable girls of my class were not allowed make up, permed hair or anything like that. There were no special fashions for young girls. Nowadays a plain girl can make the best of themselves with the right makeup, hair do and fashions. Just think of those Hollywood actresses. Bette Davis is quite plain without her makeup. And Barbara Stanwyk has a huge nose and mouth. But we see them on the screen with all their props. And they also have their talent as actresses so they make us think they are beautiful."

My grandmother was a very wise woman and she gave me a lot of confidence when I first began experimenting with makeup.
