Facials? To have or not to have?

I know that facials are a luxury but what recommendations would Gransnetters give for cost, type and experience, please? Just thought of treating myself for once.

I used to treat myself occasionally to an overnight stay at a health resort ( usually champneys) always a wonderful experience,

Hi! Thank you all for your recommendations. I did go to my local salon and had a very professional young lady who I felt was a little too professional. She just kept saying 'Perfect, perfect'. The lights in her treatment room were not subdued and she kept the full lights on for the full hour. I think subdued lights would have been nice. Also, she seemed to use a lot of essential oils and when I got home I had to have a shower straight away as I felt that I was sticking to my clothing. Will I go to her again? No. About four years ago I did go to another salon and the beauty therapist who carried out the facial was very gentle with lots of lovely scents and even the clicking of the pots and potions and the sound of her rubbing them into her hands and placing her palms just about my nose for me to appreciate the scents added to the experience. She performed a very simple scalp and hand massage. The lights were subdued and there was very gentle low, trickling water, piano music in the back ground. I loved it and felt that the atmospherics added to the relaxing experience. So, as mentioned in my original post, it is a luxury which, with respect to the state of the country and world at the moment, is of small consequence. However, all is relative and, if you are going through a tough time, my advice would be to seek out a really good salon and have a chat with your therapist first to see what you get for your experience. I shall be trying out a couple of other 'spas' this summer and will find out the best in my area.

Quite honestly anyone can very adequately care for their skin - the most important being a very good sun screen.

Nothing can replace genetic propensities and poor diet

It you like massage etc by all means go for a facial, but it isn’t necessary. I had a period when I used to have very regular facials , massages, pedicures and manicures etc, but honestly lost interest in it and find that my skin is absolutely no different - although I am very strict about sun screen and moisturiser.

I find as I have got older (77) the most important thing is looking after my skins health.

Factor 50 on my face, winter and summer, in fact all year round …🤓

I have regular shiatsu and massages which I really enjoy... but don't like having my face touched, so I use skin masks and a good moisteriser at home amd massage that in myself...

You ask for recommendations re cost, type, etc. That would depend so much on what is available in your area. If you already know a particular brand of products suits you, you could look up beauticians who use them and see if there's one near you. If not, ask around and go by word of mouth recommendations. The surroundings are important. Book your appointment personally - if you book by phone you might find you don't like the atmosphere of the place when you get there. As Pamela says, regular treatment is important. Ask if there's a discount for booking a block of three appointments (4-6 weeks apart)

Prices can vary immensely.

Let us know what you decide and how you get on!

I use the local training college. Great treatments at a fraction of the cost of the salon . I even get some free treatments now I'm a regular

Never had a facial , a manicure or pedicure in my long life . Cannot say I have missed them .

Tenko👏🏻👏🏻😂
I grew up abroad , went to Nigeria when I was 4 so have loads of sun damage. Since college I have looked after my skin very well. Sun protection every day even in winter, I have managed to keep my skin looking pretty good apart from the damage done when I was little. We didn’t know much about the damage the sun could cause.
I’m in Australia at the moment and I cringe when I see so many still lying in it. Some can get away with it but not all of us .

I only have a facial when it given as a gift. I enjoy them and find them relaxing . But I agree with the beauty therapist on here that occasional ones won’t do much to your skin . I’ve looked after my skin since a teen as I had acne and got into a cleansing , toning , moisturising routine . I now exfoliate as well and use serums plus eye creams . I’ve never smoked but have been a sunbather in my teens and twenties. I’ve used factor 30 for about 30 years snd 50 on my face plus a hat . And I drink loads of water .

If you enjoy them - then why not? They're not for me, though, as I really dislike the contact and being stuck there. Any 'result' is so temporary.

The skin is constantly growing new cells - and flaking off old ones, therefore using sunscreen and eating well makes a big (and lasting) difference.

I enjoy a facial now and again. My salon starts with a back massage which is lovely. I do feel better afterwards so don't mind the expense.
Not sure if it makes my skin look better. My routine is a splash of warm water morning and night and a rich moisturise twice a day.
I am 75 and very few wrinkles - yet!

Judy54 Fri 10-Mar-23 14:16:04

Not a fan of facials. Much prefer to have a pedicure which I find relaxing.

PamelaJ1 Thu 09-Mar-23 22:26:17

I’ve spent my life as a beauty therapist so, first of all I must say that there is no substitute for a good, daily skin care routine.
Clean, moisturise and protect against UV and the environment. No smoking, sunbathing or alcohol.
However a regular facial can give your skin a real boost, there are so many specialist facials now that can improve your skin .
If you are going to have a one off relaxing treatment then it’s not going to do much for your skin health, just relax and enjoy it. If you don’t enjoy it then don’t bother again.

All I can say is that I have been treating quite a few of my clients on a monthly basis for over 30 years and they look great. No guarantee that they wouldn’t have looked great anyway of course🤷🏼‍♀️

Shinamae Thu 09-Mar-23 21:17:39

I had this done for the first time last Friday cost me £40 and I’m very pleased with the results.
Will probably have it done every four months.
After the procedure, the technician put on a very good moisturiser and SPF

I've had a couple as part of a package, along with a massage. The lady that does them runs a spa from her home. The facial massage feels lovely but I'm not a fan of all the wiping and the creams etc. I think it's massively overrated.

crazyH Thu 09-Mar-23 20:09:53

My daughter gave me a small bottle of Dr Sebah’s Serum Repair - now that’s a miracle worker !!!! I have loose skin on the back of my hands - one drop massaged into my hands this morning and it has really plumped up the skin. I haven’t tried it on my face yet.

crazyH Thu 09-Mar-23 20:02:07

Was gifted one or two in the past. Although I appreciated it, I found it did nothing for my face, but the actual massaging of the face was quite relaxing. I’d rather have a pedicure - can’t bend for too long these days to do it myself.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 09-Mar-23 19:55:29

But what your skin look like without the facials Visgirl? You’ll never know.

timetogo2016 Thu 09-Mar-23 18:36:10

Never had one,i don`t like strangers getting too close to me.

Visgir1 Thu 09-Mar-23 18:27:29

Yes big fan. Especially Micro current been having monthly for over 23 years once a month.
Same Beautician as well, for me well worth it.

silverlining48 Thu 09-Mar-23 18:05:33

I used to use my local further education college for all sorts of treatment ( and hairdressing too).
The students are supervised and always did a professional job. Much cheaper than salons and they used high end products too.

MrsKen33 Thu 09-Mar-23 18:05:04

I didn’t like the one facial I had. I found it claustrophobic.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 09-Mar-23 17:51:32

I am a facial fan.

If I were you I would choose a salon (preferably by recommendation) and then discuss with the beautician what you want from the facial and she can then tell you products available.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 09-Mar-23 17:47:32

I was given a voucher for a course of facials about 30 years ago after dropping some hints. I haven’t had one since, nuff said, though I appreciated the kind gift. Cleansing well, exfoliating and using moisturiser day and night and of course sunscreen every day are quite enough. I’m 72 and have good skin, few lines.
