The “perfect” white cotton T shirt

Does it exist?
Unpacking my summer clothes I find I have a ridiculous number of white T shirts - none of them just right - and the result of my endless quest for the perfect one.
Is it too much to ask?
Thick white cotton - pure cotton, not “cotton rich”
Round neck - not too high, not too scooped, boat neck acceptable
Reasonable length
Generously cut around the middle - boxy shape ideal
Side slits
Short or just above the elbow sleeves.
Adding up all the T shirts I have got, some now relegated to pj status, I could have bought one or two from a high end designer for the same money!
I don’t necessarily want cheap T shorts, they never last anyway, but I am still hunting.
Any suggestions please?

I used to like M&S cheap white cotton tshirts. They were reasonable quality and I'd buy a few each year, bleach them if they looked grubby and then they were relegated to dusters or paint cloths.

They cost more now and they are poorer quality.

Thanks for the Lands End tip. I've bought 4 - 2 white and two in other colours.

They wash well, stay in shape and don't shrink - not that I have bought a white one!

Perhaps I should.

I've just ordered some cheap ones from Cotton Traders, just for wearing around the house, hope they will be ok.

No white T-shirts in my wardrobe. What I really need is a good selection of upper garments with colours that will blend in with coffee, tea, spag bol, chilli, gravy, tomato sauce, and the occasional red wine stains... Failing that, a grown-up version of a "Tommee Tippee" bib would also be a definite bonus... Poor eyesight, shaking hands... Aah, the joys of the elderly at meal-times..

And me too, I don't like light plain colours as the always get a stain on them .

I think Lands End might suit. They do petite as well.

I've been happy with Lands' End white T-shirts for years. However, I found sunscreen would leave yellow stains that not even bleach removed. Then I came across this tip in a David Neiper catalogue and it works well:

"Rub neat washing up liquid into the stain, then soak the item in a solution of half white vinegar and half cold water for an hour."

(I use a pastry brush to apply Fairy Liquid in the first instance.)

I’ve never owned a white T shirt because white doesn’t suit me and neither do T Shirts, although I do have a few souvenir ones from gigs over the years.
I’m lucky by the sound of it.

Callistemon, DH wears Lands End tshirts a lot (or John Lewis) but I have never thought of buying them for myself.

Aldom Wed 17-May-23 18:07:18

This is a John Lewis T shirt from last summer. Quality cotton. Elbow sleeve, little side slit. Worth a look to see if they have similar this year.

I know we all have a different version of our perfect T. The problem I find is that the shops make a different version of their t-shirts every year, so even if you have bought from them before you can't guarantee that they will be the same again.

So I will buy one, see how it washes, then go back and buy a few more. Of course this only works if there are plenty in the shops and it is not too far away, or if shipping is free if you order. I like both round neck and v-neck, but both cannot be too low or too high. Fussy!

I like them, the quality seems good, but the lower neckines are too low for me, the round necks seem too ordinary!

No, we're not fussy, we know what we like but can't always find it. Or they stop making it!

For me a perfect t-shirt would have to be one that doesn't involve exploitation of workers or damage the environment.

I love the comfort of a t-shirt - but only to wear at home or gardening. I find a boxy blouse or kimono/shell top fits much better and looks nicer.

I avoid white like the plague now, too, as it makes my teeth (and the whites of my eyes) look less than white - more cream or beige. Pale blue, pink or ivory are still good.

White Stuff currently have a new offer. Two T shirts for £40. Usually over £29. I know, because I bought one recently at the full price.
They come in a variety of colours, plain or patterned.
A variety of necklines and good length, short sleeve.
Quality cotton.

Good length - do you mean when tucked in they stay in flat, not pop out? My Ts, not tucked, look messy with a jacket.

I think White Stuff has gone 'off' lately.

This seems a ludicrous price to me, but The Times reckons these are the “perfect T shirts”…….

Ouch!
I have probably spent more on “the search” but bearing in mind the running dangers from spag bol, soup, splashback from sardine tins and little chocolatey fingers, these are sadly not for me!

Calipso Thu 18-May-23 21:17:01

I have a linen knit one from Whistles, quite fine but just looks the business. I wear it time after time after time.

Aldom Thu 18-May-23 21:45:25

Norah by good length, I was actually meaning the short sleeve is a good length. Not a cap sleeve.
I'm 5'4" and the T shirt would tuck in without popping out.

CanadianGran Thu 18-May-23 22:08:45

Sarah76, did they weave gold dust into the cotton? Those are expensive!

I know made in Uk , or made in Canada will be more expensive because of the wages, but I can find an ethically farmed cotton, made in Canada t-shirt for about 26 GBP.

I have found that if you find a tee shirt with the right cut for you, it is made from the wrong material. If you find one with the right material and the right cut, you can bet your bottom dollar, you won't be able to get it in the colour you want. I have a whole wardrobe full of clothes that aren't exactly what I want. Mind you, my body is like that too!
