Eye make up problems

Can anyone recommend an eye make up brand that does not cause allergies? I know it’s hay fever time, but my eyes water constantly and feel itchy when I use eye shadow, eye liner pencil or mascara.

Can't help with make up but have found my chronic watering eyes are cured (!) since changing 2 things. I take a Sea Buckthorn oil capsule everyday, (Natures Best) and use exfoliating gloves. (Ameliorate [the best] - of course you go carefully around the eye area but it does keep flakes to a minimum.) I started exfoliating since noticing (yuck factor alert) 'dust' inside my clothes - a daily once over with the exfoliating gloves (sometimes dry, sometimes in shower) sorts that out and skin looks much better.

Ive had dry eyes since my early 50s. Probably menopause related. Sea Buckthorn capsules is the only thing that helps. I found eyedrops were just a nuisance. If I don't take them for a few days I certainly know it.

I believe your “erupting eyelids” is caused by putting cream on your lids. Eyelids are not generally dry and putting any moisturizer or cream on them will cause a breakout. Only put your product under your eyes, never on your lids.

Try going a week without, your lids will clear up. If it persists then you have an intolerance to the product you’re using. Try a different brand and try going to a lotion version of moisturizing.
Problem solved!

The very first poster SachaMac hit the nail on the head about your constantly watering eyes - you have a dry eye condition (if that isn’t an irony). Get yourself some over-the counter (non-prescription) lubricant tears and use them regularly throughout the day. You WILL notice a difference!

I have dry eyes too due to glaucoma. Along with my steroid drops I use tears 3-4 times from morning to night. Takes the redness and scratchiness out too.

There are many drops on the market. Start with liquid tears - if you think you need more go into lubricant tears, which is thicker. You’ll find a brand that works.
Cheers!

I’ve suffered from hay fever for so many years! However I’ve found the Mercadona supermarket in Spain/Canaries/Portugal has a super own range of cosmetics. I’ve tried every mascara on the market over the years. When I visit I stock up and their mascara actually makes my lashes look pretty good. They’re non existent normally. I know it’s maybe a long shot if you don’t travel however you might know someone who is travelling. Tried their eyeshadow, mascara and blusher so far. Apparently their foundation is recommended also. My next purchase on my next visit.

I’ve always used eye cream under my eyes but don’t know what to use on my eyelids which are now very dry and erupt every now and again.

Esmay - I had totally forgotten about Kohl eyeliner!

Happy days!

Stopped using mascara recently and have not used eye shadow for years. Absolutely have to use an eyebrow pencil tho. I’m good to go with my eyebrows done!

Sadly my eyelashes are now virtually non-existent, so I don't use mascara (too many false eyelashes in the 60s?). But I use Clinique liner and shadow for evening occasions. Eyebrow pencil goes straight on in the morning, I'm ghostly without it

If you are at all allergic dolt have your eyelashes tinted. Not allergic to makeup but had awful reaction years ago when I had an eyelash tint, would never do it again.

I like elf eye makeup lots of colours and not expensive. I don’t wear mascara as I have hooded eyes (family trait) and mascara just doesn’t work

I used to use one from Body Shop but no longer available.
I’ve now found one from Lush called Ultraband. It a cream, I find it very good. Not cheap though. Worth a try.

Hi try Look Fabulous Forever, make up made especially for us older ladies. Brilliant lady started it when she was about 70 and it is doing well with plenty of help and videos to help using their products. will give you money back if you are allergic to it. Please try and good luck.

Her products are really good.

I’ve just had cataract surgery and had no idea there were so many restrictions after. Including make up so have another two weeks to go before I can start again. Worse think has been moisturiser but I succumbed today and put some on very carefully.

I just gave up wearing eye make up - it was quite liberating.

When you say your eyes water constantly have you had them checked for dry eye. I suffer from this and use an eye gel to help control the problem. I have no recommendations for eye makeup but do use waterproof mascara in cae my eyes start up.

I have to be careful what I use on my face. I have allergies and found that I'm fine with Boots Natural Collection mascara, Rimmel foundation, blusher, lipstick and eyeliner pencil.
Opticrom hayfever drops are brilliant.

LadyGracie Sat 24-Jun-23 13:32:41

Boots No. 7 make up is hypoallergenic, I’m able to use the mascara and eyeshadow.

Onthemoors Sat 24-Jun-23 13:30:16

Yes, I recommend getting your eyelashes tinted, lasts about 6 weeks. No makeup required or eye remover required. Please give it a go, works for me.

I had similar problems but when this came up a while ag someone suggested Poundland so gave it a go and haven’t looked back. No more eye irritation.

Nannarose Sat 24-Jun-23 13:10:24

I have similar problems, and I'm not going to recommend any brands, as allergies can happen with anything.
I contact Head Office and ask for samples - sometimes they can't supply them, but will promise to refund you if you can't tolerate something, or ask the store to allow you to try something specific.
I will say that Lancome & Space NK have been very helpful to me.

The only other trick I have is my mother's: index finger in a pot of vaseline, smear on to lashes in a upward motion, then lick your finger and repeat! useful when you can't use any mascara at all!

Nannashirlz Sat 24-Jun-23 13:03:45

I buy loads of different brands I tend to get mine off qvc as i can try and return if i don’t like. I like bare minerals but they don’t do it now so I get off the high street. I also use doll10 from Qvc what does irritate this time might next so what works for me might not for you

grandtanteJE65 Sat 24-Jun-23 13:02:46

Lancôme pricy, but absolutely the best in my opinion, but if you want something less expensive, try the Body Shop.

Probably best not to wear eye makeup for a fortnight or three weeks before trying new products.

dancingnana1 Sat 24-Jun-23 12:52:50

I also would recommend Look Fabulous Forever. It is very good for ageing skin. I use the LFF face prime every day and I feel it makes me look younger! The eye make up is very good as well.

Ilovedragonflies Sat 24-Jun-23 12:43:22

I'm in the same boat and allergic to pretty much everything. ffleur is right, tube mascara really works. I use Wowcombo My Amazing Lashes and it's brilliant. Washes off with water but doesn't move in the rain (go figure!) I've used it now for a couple of years and had no reaction to it (which is a miracle in itself!)
