Curly Hair Chat 👩‍🦱

Hello

Can we have a chat about curly hair please?

There is so much advice now about the myriad of products; routines; plopping; squishing etc etc, it’s confusing.

This morning I’ve learned about ‘net plopping’, which involves
diffuse drying while wearing a pair of fish nets on your bonce.

I let mine air dry, but I’m looking into a new diffusing hair dryer, but that’s confusing (and potentially bank balance crushing) too…

What things do you use with, and do to, your hair?

Has anyone had a specialist curly cut’?

Thank you 😊

FannyCornforth small world! We might even know each other in RL

Thank you Fanny. I noticed I wrote "African-American" and then wondered about that and have now learned that in UK it's "Afro-Caribbean"! Anyway someone mentioned Cantu products an I have found those and Shea Moisture to be the best so far for fine weightless (like when I have a messy bun and take out the elastic, the hair stays up there and doesn't fall down!) curlies. Plus you have to use a LOT! Gels just dry mine out. (and diffuser would just make me fluffy)

I know very few people in the real world! I’m practically a hermit.

Unless you work in a school it’s very unlikely!

I’m in Littleover.

I wondered if anyone at Sally Montague can do curly cuts.
They have a new salon in the village

Sunbar your’s sounds similar to mine in texture.
I don’t get on with gel and am prone to fluff

Mine 2a, I wide comb it in the shower with the conditioner in, (usually Garnier), towel off so it’s not dripping, then leave it. It’s rarely combed, unless by my fingers.

This

FannyCornforth Wed 19-Jul-23 15:49:46

Oh, that’s lovely Jacky

Callistemon21 Wed 19-Jul-23 15:54:02

Mine's been chopped today and it was blow dried fairly straight!
I await to see what tomorrow brings.

It's difficult to photograph the back of your head, when I tried I managed to get a picture of the conservatory blinds 🤔

Lovely, Jaxjacky 🙂

Callistemon21 Wed 19-Jul-23 15:58:16

I'm hoping it looks like the second picture because that's what I asked for! It's quite short.

Callistemon21 Wed 19-Jul-23 15:59:53

That's not me, btw, that is a younger model!!

FannyCornforth Wed 19-Jul-23 16:00:19

That’s really nice Callistemon
Like a very short graduated bob

You’ve not been tinkering about on FaceTune have you? 😉

Callistemon21 Wed 19-Jul-23 16:04:10

wink

At least this hairdresser listened and didn't chop it all off! Sometimes I've come out nearly in tears.

The colour's a bit richer than mine, I was wondering what shade it is.

There's a YouTube channel by someone called Gena Marie that I watch sometimes. She talks about all sort of curly hair topics but she's not one of the 'Curly Girl Method' girls who fanatically refuse to use different products. She talks about how to use different products, which products she likes and has had problems with, and basically how she manages her hair. I've picked up one or two tips, but having said that I don't use any products any more. Might be of interest to those looking for new products though.

Nice Callistemon it looks very chic.

Jaxjacky

Nice Callistemon it looks very chic.

You both do, Jaxjacky and Callistemon.

Mine is a lot easier to manage than when it was short and straight. I used to wake up looking like Beaker the Muppet, but now a quick spritz of water and a scrunch gets it looking more cared-for.

It isn't me!
But the aim is that style, although 3 hours after I came out of the hairdressers it started to look a bit wavy .......

Callistemon21 Wed 19-Jul-23 23:00:40

Thank you though 🙂

Nearly there, after the short-all-over bottle brush from a scissor-happy stylist last time!

BigBertha1, I've always admired and wanted curly hair. Mine is poker straight and very fine. I used to get up early to spend time (every single morning) with the curling tongs - and hairspray to stop the waves from falling out. My work colleague spent equal time with the straighteners, hating her natural curls - just bonkers!

Strongcoffee12 Thu 20-Jul-23 11:41:32

Fanny I used to go to an activity in the community room in littleover and I worked in schools - mainly in Staffs

I’ve got a few hairdressers to try out in my area. I googled curly hairdresser and put in my area and I thought I’d go and visit some that came up. I’ll come back and let you know …….

Callistemon21 Thu 20-Jul-23 11:45:14

Mine is very peculiar today, it needs some attention.

Madgran77 Thu 20-Jul-23 16:11:46

Aveda Be Curly products are excellent ; you can order on line. Plus a very good cut! And I tend to let it dry naturally with Be Curly production, scrunching it up with my hands occasionally. I have a fairly standard hairdryer from Boots with a diffuser attachment which I use if I need to dry it quickly

VenusDeVillendorf Sat 22-Jul-23 13:12:10

I have 3A hair and it’s fine and it’s not dry. It’s about 24 inches long, cut in light layers, silver grey in parts.

Using a lot of products weigh it down, so I only use a tiny bit of conditioner occasionally on the ends.
I shampoo with clarifying shampoo once and rinse well while brushing it out in the shower. This is the only time I brush my hair. I use a tangle tamer.

When wet I turn upside down and use Boots curl moose on the ends scrunch it in, and then wrap my hair loosely in a microfibre turban towel.

Occasionally I use a tiny tiny amount of leave in Aussie curl creme on the ends only.

After about half an hour I take the turban off gently to not disturb the curl pattern, shake my hair out upside down and leave it to air dry.

I clip it up loosely at night and release it in the morning.

I never brush it and try not to touch it at all between washes.

I wash it every couple of days, unless I’m swimming, and then I wash it everyday, as no cap I’ve ever worn works to keep it dry!

I just came across this blog this morning with a list of curly specialist hairdressers in UK. Might be helpful for someone.
