How many perfumes do you have?

Just to start a light-hearted conversation, how may fragrances are on your shelf, and do you wear them all?

I have only a few.

White Tea by Elizabeth Arden - it's my go to daily spritz, I wear it every day, even on days home.
Shiseido Zen Secret Bloom - this is my evening fragrance. My first real fragrance was the original Zen, but they stopped making it, and this is a similar but more floral version.
Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt - I have a tiny travel size sample that I toss in for travelling, but I find it fades quickly.

I think I've only ever had 2 full size bottles on the go, and switch up a travel size when I find something interesting. I will try a different daily light scent when I finish a bottle, but my evening scent will last for years.

Some women I know have a real collection of fragrances, some others only ever have one. Yours?

At the moment I either wear Fragonard's Peony perfume or Aldi's dupe of Victor and Rolf's Flowerbomb.

Yardley London morning dew perfume : the perfume features a blend of floral , citrus notes. (one of the best Indian perfumes brands).

An olfactory stroll into the past - how lovely.😍

I don't wear all the perfumes listed .
I was just having an olfactory stroll into the past .
I wear cheapo scents after a bath and spray my father's room which can be unpleasant.
My expensive scents were all gifts !

NotSpaghetti Sat 29-Jul-23 10:11:51

If you really enjoy perfumes, there will always be one or two "new ones" that you'd like. People buy them as gifts if they know what you have tried and liked. About half of mine were gifts.

Yes, some are expensive but I suppose I don't try the mega expensive ones anymore... (unless I can't help myself in Harvey Nicks or Selfridges grin)...

We used to have a shop in our small town that sold only perfumes and had the most exotic ones imaginable (£300 plus a bottle, years ago) and it was tempting to pop in on the way past. You get to know what you like even if you rarely bought anything.

Now there is the option to buy sample sets online from some of the big brands - or "discovery sets" which are excellent gifts. This gives you a chance to see what really works for you - not just the one you liked best on day x in the airport lounge.

I don't buy any makeup, smoke, spend a lot of moneh on things for the house, drink moderately and rarely eat out. The fragrances are a daily treat and if they are kept carefully they go on smelling "correctly" much longer than people think. I do know I'm hugely privileged to be able to indulge myself like this and have these fabulous gifts from nearest and dearest. I know many people just can't afford it and for whom even an inexpensive dupe is too much money. I'm not immune from understanding how my indulgence may read (having "shaken out the sofa" in my past - looking for coins for the bus or a bottle of milk). I really do wish everyone could have a treat now and again. I'm not being defensive here. Just sad for the state of things today. Perfumes are definitely not necessities for life and I do feel very lucky.

On a happy "note" - I came across a small sample of a fragrance I've not worn for 35 years recently and tried it out. My youngest daughter gave me a huge hug and said "oh mum, I feel about five again - you smell just right". We were both quite moved as it brought back lots of memories.
I don't wear "Rive Gauche" anymore. Maybe I would suddenly be innundated with small delights from my "courting" days if i did! grin

eddiecat78 All but 2 of mine were gifts

This isn't a criticism but I am amazed how much some of you must be spending on perfume! When there have been threads previously about buying clothes we've been asked to bear in mind that not everyone can afford to spend a lot but I haven't seen any negative comments here!
I don't currently have any perfume.
The last I bought was Dior Pure Poison but I wouldn't spend that much again. I do like decent body lotion though especially L'Occitane Neroli & Orchidee.
I do find a lot of scents give me a headache - can't have sweet peas or lilies in the house

This is my third attempt to list my perfumes - since I began a whole lot more popped into my head .

My love of things smelly started with a bar of Mornay Sandalwood soap .
I don't know if they ever produced a perfume to match .

Then , it was Aqua Manda and Kiku which I wore as as a teenager.
Nothing has ever beaten that wonderful yellow ball .

I've worn
Anais Anais and it fades on me .
L'Air du Temps also fades fast .
I used to wear
White Linen , but it doesn't smell nice on me anymore .
I liked Heaven Scent and Rive Gauche ( that hideous bottle )

I've worn :

Red Door
Dune
Diorissimo - still love it .
Beautiful
J'Adore
Tresor
La Vie est Belle
First
Samsara
Ysatis
Caleche
Vent Vert - can't find it anymore .
Island - not produced anymore .
Quelques Fleurs
Cashmere - by Next
Knowing
Jean Paul Gaultier
Shalimar plus any by Guerlain - they smell like baby powder to me .
Most Yardley floral scents
And ditto for M and S including Mimosa .
Green Tea
Sunflowers
Two from Avon -Little Black Dress and Far Away - the original scents not the newer ones .
Aqua Lavanda Puig for an all over cooling splash .
Halveti - so expensive therefore most oud dupes .

I haven't tried Jo Malone - I know what will happen - a craze which costs lots of money !

Two for me. The favourite is "Very Irrisistible" by Givenchy and my alternative is "Lady Million".

Nonnadiana Sun 23-Jul-23 10:44:25

I love Eden by Cacharel. I keep one in my handbag. I used to like LAir du Temps

NotSpaghetti Sat 22-Jul-23 18:24:10

My husband has a bottle of Gautier's Fleur du Mâle which is lush, floral and intense which I occasionally "borrow" - I think some fragrances are decidedly unisex.
Some of the Tom Ford's are - eg. Tobacco Vanille.

BridgetPark Sat 22-Jul-23 17:53:54

I used to love Dior Dune, a beautiful fragrance, but hard to track down. My newest favourite is a L'ancome Idole, its strong and very long lasting. I also love Clinique Aromatics Elixer. There are so many on the market these days, I suspect there is big money in it, it's cost has rocketed, sadly.

It is interesting to read that some people wear perfume for the benefit of others. I think after a while you become so used to a perfume that you don’t smell it yourself any more, but others still can. Although I wear perfume mainly because I enjoy the smell myself, I can think of three occasions when strangers asked what my perfume was. The answers were Chanel 19, Fragonard’s Patchouli and Paco by Paco Rabanne. The latter came in a tin, and I’m not sure if they still do it.

SueD Sat 22-Jul-23 15:12:12

I have three. A next perfume which I wear for everyday, Eau de Lancôme that I wear for going out and Rive Gauche that is for high days and holidays. I wear perfume every day and it’s part of my daily routine along with moisturiser and lippy. The full works are for going out days and add in some eye make up for evenings

NotSpaghetti Sat 22-Jul-23 15:04:57

Would be nice Bossyrossy to have one for home use - for you then maybe?
I think the original is fabulous and SO wish you could smell it - especially as you are generously wearing it for others!

melp1 Sat 22-Jul-23 12:21:55

Angel by Theirry Mugler and the Aldi dupe for everyday use.

Bossyrossy Sat 22-Jul-23 12:17:49

Notspaghetti, I guess I wear Molecule 01 for the benefit of others, they certainly tell me how lovely it smells. I agree about the newer versions not being as good, I stick to the original.

Gransey Sat 22-Jul-23 11:26:20

Kathmaggie

Dioressence is the only perfume I wore in the 1980’s and still adore today. Other perfumes from my past I don’t like anymore

Is it still available? I would dearly love some, thank you for the inspiration Kathmaggie, another one to check out at the Duty free?

debsf1 Sat 22-Jul-23 11:23:17

Oh dear. I have so many! Flowerbomb (2 different versions), La Vie est Belle (4 different versions), Chanel Coco, Black Opium, Obsession, Assaro Wanted, YSL Elle and lots more as I can never make my mind up as to which is my absolute favourite. I think I’m making up for lost years, my late husband was unable to tolerate anything perfumed due to a rare form of migraines so wearing anything perfumed was a big no, and going out was a nightmare..

Nonny Sat 22-Jul-23 11:20:09

I have used Diorissimo since I was 20. It isn't always easy to find these days. I also use Anais Anais!

NotSpaghetti Sat 22-Jul-23 10:10:30

BtW. Not the newer Molecule fragrances.

NotSpaghetti Sat 22-Jul-23 10:09:42

Bossyrossy why do you wear it if you can't smell it? That sort of defeats the object for me.
I'm just curious.

I do love Molecule and (as said earlier) have worn it since its inception but I would certainly stop if I couldn't smell it.

StephLauraine Sat 22-Jul-23 09:01:03

I’m a perfume lover, and TBH, a perfume snob. I’ve been scouting for a new summer fragrance and sampled a few M&S perfumes last week and was impressed. Came across this in research ..
melissajanelee.com/marks-and-spencer-perfume-dupes/
I was also impressed with Body Shop Blue Musk Zest which is the winner - along with M&S Pink Pepper.
My winter perfume is usually Mitsouko but I’m lusting after Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady and feel a treat coming on. As they say, I’m worth it!

Bossyrossy Sat 22-Jul-23 08:41:09

Molecule 01. I can’t smell it and neither can my husband, but that’s a good thing as he can’t stand perfume. So how do I know it exists? Because I get so many compliments when I wear it, often people recognising what it is. It is not available everywhere but it is sold by Liberty of London, and can also be bought on line, about £95 per 100ml.
