Dress opinions please

I've bought a dress online and it arrived this morning. When i tried it on I thought it looked really nice (I'm size 18 and don't have much confidence in clothes shopping). When I asked OH for his opinion he looked, said "Hmmm, its OK. It's a bit 'busy' though and it looks old fashioned, like something from the 70s".
'Busy' is his favourite word for something with a lot of pattern.
Now I don't know whether or not to keep the dress. I liked it but now it seems spoiled.
I think (hope!) I've attached a pic of the dress and am keen to get your opinions.

I think it’s lovely. Even if I didn’t wear it I’d happily hang it up in the bedroom and gaze at it adoringly. He’s right, it does look old fashioned but doesn’t realise that old fashion is now new fashion. I’d be tempted to buy it myself even though I can’t remember the last time I bought a ‘frock’. I’ve always loved floral patterns on a dark background so I am biased.

The dress is lovely but as to whether it suits you, who knows!

Does it suit your size, shape, height?

This........

I think the dress is lovely, in the picture, although I don’t usually like Cotton Traders. Have you tried the dress on, with hair and make up done, so you are looking your best? If you feel comfortable and confident, wear it! 😊

Someone said it was from Cotton Traders so I had a look (not with a view to buying, just being nosy). I see the back of the waist is elasticated - would that make your backside stick out like a galleon in full sail? Just a thought.

I have a couple of dresses from Cotton Traders which have this elastication in the back. It’s not the dress that features here. Although the dresses were the correct size for me, I needed to sew in an extra piece of elastic to loosen the dress around the waist (I do have a bit of a tummy!) otherwise I definitely WOULD been a galleon in full size!

Maybe, GSM, if it did that anyway!

I like the dress , I’m 5.2 and don’t mind dresses being long . The v neckline and waist are flattering and the large floral pattern has taken over from the ditsy florals of previous years . The black background means it’s trans seasonal , so will be ok for autumn and spring.
I’d wear it with boots for the colder months and trainers or Birkenstocks in the summer.
As for your DH , sorry but they don’t have a clue, I’d ask a female friend or female family member for advice .
I take my DD advice rather than my DH anytime .

I love your dress and hubby is correct as I had one very similar in the 70's and loved it . I wish I'd kept it sad

Mandy74 Sun 23-Jul-23 12:44:11

I think, as someone upthread suggested, we could give better advice if we saw a picture of you wearing the dress. A pic of you, without showing your face, would help people form an opinion. Although you would maybe need to be prepared for some people saying it didn’t suit you?

Shelflife Sun 23-Jul-23 12:17:19

If you like it , keep and wear it !

grannyrebel7 Sun 23-Jul-23 12:10:12

Love it! Bet you look great in it. What do men know? smile

I am with your husband, I think it is pretty awful, far too busy and too long for me. I personally think it is a young, tall, slim person's dress although you will hate me for saying that. Sorry. I am 5.2 with no bust whatsoever and could definitely not get away with wearing that.

I actually don’t ask DH anymore if he likes something because it’s not his decision and life’s too short!

RosesandLilac Sun 23-Jul-23 11:48:04

I bought this one from Roman, I’m an 18 and I absolutely love it!

Its a lovely dress I would wear it. Can I ask where its from?

Mollygo Sun 23-Jul-23 11:32:00

It looks good. If you look at yourself in the mirror and like what you see, keep it. That’s what counts, unless your DH will keep commenting negatively.
I tried a lovely top on Friday. DH loved it, but I 😢thought it looked better on the coat hanger.

Blossoming Sun 23-Jul-23 11:31:17

It’s lovely Valels, if it fits well and the colours suit you go with it.

The reviews from larger ladies say it’s a flattering fit, it isn’t tight and slim fitting,

Glorianny Sun 23-Jul-23 11:18:04

It is lovely, but I wonder how tall you are. This would be full length on me. I'm not tall and a lot of the models are.

Staceyann Sun 23-Jul-23 10:27:54

Joseann

He he, no one has commented on the price of the dress, (I have no idea by the way, and would have no inclination to check).
Perhaps it's just me who gets picked on!

I don’t know the price, but I think it’s from Cotton Traders - I seem to recall seeing it in their catalogue. How did you get picked on, Joseann? I can’t see your dress?

Redhead56 Sun 23-Jul-23 10:23:01

It’s what I would wear it’s long lovely and feminine and covers the tops of arms. Keep it wear and I bet you get compliments on how nice you look.

Enid101 Sun 23-Jul-23 10:15:05

I think it’s a great dress. The size of the flower makes it more fun than a little ditzy print and the pattern at the bottom adds interest. If you like it then wear it is my motto.

LRavenscroft Sun 23-Jul-23 10:11:20

If you feel happy and confident in it, then that is all that matters. Step forth into the sunshine and enjoy!

I would ask a female friend and family if you can trust their judgment.
Personally, I find it hopeless buying anything DH initially does not like as comments are made when I wear them straight away. I sometimes leave them in the wardrobe for a few weeks and then put them on if I like them and he doesn't even recognise them.

NotSpaghetti Sun 23-Jul-23 09:19:12

Given that the reviews from ladies who are up to size 22 are pretty positive I think it will be OK. Actually.
