Mascara

As I have got older my eyelashes have become much shorter and much more sparse.

I am looking for a mascara that will accentuate my eyelashes but not make me look like I have those ridiculous fake lashes that the young ones wear. I don't wear much makeup anyway and have worn it even less since Covid.

I used to use Rimmel and prefer a thinner brush than a thick bushy one. I am not sure about the mascara with fibres in it as they always seem to shed

I was looking at the Be Fabulous Forever mascara - which is for us older ladies - but the reviews were not that good and the brush was really thick.

I don't want to pay a fortune and would prefer brown black to black.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

I’ve been using Rapid lash eyelash serum (from Amazon) for about 2 years now and my lashes are lovely and long. I also get them tinted. I shall have a look for the burgundy mascara though as I have green eyes, sounds good.

Anything by Maybeline.

Clinique High Impact - builds but without clumps and fibres. On the rare occasions when I wear mascara this is the best I have found by far. My daughters (40 and 38) also use it and rave about it to their friends.

Dior Show in dark blue for me and sometimes Clinique. There is an offer online for M&S if anyone uses Clinique,I like their take the day off for removing mascara and among the collection is a small mascara.

If you just want colour you could try an eyelash dye. I get mine done occasionally and it lasts for several weeks. Costs £12-£15 depending on where I go.

Does eyelash serum actually produce re-growth? I have very little in the way of eyelashes left at all.
I probably pulled most of them out with the false ones I used to wear in the 1960s. Oh well.

Has no one heard of Maybelline? The #1 cosmetic/makeup company in the world? They own L’Oréal and Lancôme.

Why would anyone spend money on Lancôme mascara (which is very pricey in the US!) and not try Maybelline Great Lash in the iconic pink/green tube for waaay less money? It’s the same formula. Industry insiders will tell you that. It’s the best!

You can replace your tube regularly for clean and contamination free purposes - that’s important - because we know women often times keep their mascara way beyond use and shelf life. Don’t risk eye problems, plus with this brand you’re saving money.

Definitely try eyelash serum. Mine were very short and stumpy and now they are long. Doesn’t take long, just a few weeks and then any volume mascara works well.

Benefit Roller Lash Curling Mascara

I use a L’Oreal one called Million Dollar Lashes, Balm Noir. It was recommended a couple of years back in GH magazine. It’s lovely and doesn’t make your eyelashes ‘crunchy’ !
As for eyebrows I’ve recently had mine microbladed, expensive but Oh ! The joy of not having to pencil them in every day as I used to.
I justify the cost by thinking of how much I’d spent over the years on pencils, powders, waxes etc., and would still be buying now. Best thing ever !

I've used Avon for many years and the prices are better than the high street store I used to buy from. Lots to choose from and I've always been pleased with every order. I have a rep, but you can buy online.

I love Benefit mascara but recently bought one in Primark to try. It’s super and very reasonably priced!

I had seen an ad online for mascara made specifically for older women. The word Prime was used in the ad and the item I got was very inexpensive (in US dollars) and I got two for that price. It wasn't the "Prime Prometics" brand item, (mascara for older women and a pricier product). I wound up getting the more inexpensive one and when I first used it I was pretty amazed at the result. It stayed on very well but was a little hard to get off even with oil, even with soap and water so keep that in mind. But the one that I am going to try next is Prime Prometics and is pricier. Both of these can be found on Amazon. I Expect the name brand to be a little better than the one that I got but if you check Amazon you'll see both and you can decide for yourself. I have to tell you the off brand was pretty amazing with just one swipe!

I use Mavala serum on my eyelashes and to my great surprise after about 3 or 4 weeks of using it at night, my lashes are noticeably longer. Can’s say that about the lower lashes though.

I’ve tried many but my current favourite is Clinique Lash Power in black. I assume they it in brown.

They do and brown black, which I use.

Try the Look Fantastic or Feel Unique sites for good prices.

Another vote here for Clinique Lash Power.
It isn't cloggy, lasts well (even on hot, sweaty days) but comes off at the end of the day with just water. My eyes don't like creamy or oily removers so this is a bonus for me. When it is new it can go on a little too thickly but I stroke a clean mascara wand through to separate my lashes. The brown is quite dark but not too harsh.
It's not cheap (£24 in Boots) but as Marydoll says there are online stores selling it for less. I got some through the Boots £10 Tuesday offers.
I also really like the effect of Bobby Brown Smoky Eye but it contain ingredients which inititally make my eyes water and I find it is more difficult to remove. You may find your eyes are less sensitive so it could be good for you and it isn't quite so expensive. I believe most Bobby Brown concessions will put some on your eyes for you to try.

Poundland also do lovely lipsticks and nail varnishes

Ffion63 Sun 20-Aug-23 12:35:22

Clinique for me …… the one in the dark green tube. I bought a Look Fabulous Forever one and it was very watery and I kept getting splodges on my face.

Bluedaisy Sun 20-Aug-23 12:35:02

I can recommend Eyeko for skinny brushes and their fab mascara as I’m a mascara girl myself. Also YSL if you’re flush, this is my favourite one but Mabelline are also exellent.

Another vote for lash growing serums, I was astonished to find that they actually work! Boots and Amazon have a range but best not to go for the cheapest.

An eye surgeon told me that the magic ingredient is something that is used for patients with glaucoma. It turned out to be a useful side effect.

Kiko Milano mascaras are best for me.

GardenofEngland Sun 20-Aug-23 12:25:59

I love Benefit tinted primer. I only use this now good coverage does not smudge and no need for mascara! Not the cheapest but lasts for ages and doesn't go clumpy and the little brush is excellent at getting down to the lash root.

Primelash not cheap but does it for me

Gwenisgreat Sun 20-Aug-23 12:11:30

I gave up in my youth trying to wear mascara - one blink and I had black stripes down my specs!

grandtanteJE65 Sun 20-Aug-23 11:59:25

Lancôme is the only one I have ever found that does not run, so I too suggest it. It may seem dear but it lasts for ages.

Granmarderby10 Sun 20-Aug-23 11:57:49

I wish there were more colours than just black, such as blue, teal, burgundy or violet. Not everyone hankers after the false look. I would rather achieve the enhanced natural look.
And preferably waterproof too
