Sick of stripes!

One reason I am looking forward to autumn and winter will be that I can consign all my stripey t shirts and tops to the bags destined for the loft!
Yes I know there are alternatives- but I find most florals “mumsy” and abstracts tend to feature only in the more expensive ranges. And a t shirt is a t shirt is a t shirt!
So bye bye Bretons, and so long stripes.

NotSpaghetti, oh yes, you've reminded me. Another pet hate (along with stripes, leather look and animal prints) is anything with words printed on it - t-shirts, clothes, cushions, wall art etc. - all very naff.

What about the cashmere stripe sweaters Foxygloves, haven't you got a pile of them for cooler months, or is it just au revoir to t shirts?

I do have some patchwork cashmere sweaters by turtle doves and some plain ones, but not stripes!
Oops I have just bought this though and had compliments each time I’ve worn it (with white jeans)
Re the thickness of T shirt cotton - I find if it’s too lightweight it is flimsy and doesn’t hang well.
Ah well, winter draws on soon!

I’ve got lots of striped tops too! I like plain tops in solid colours but they show every mark or spill. Stripes also help to disguise the holes that appear at the waistline - from jeans buttons? Even though I wear an elastic belt through jeans loops over the button the holes still appear! Any thoughts or solutions on this?

hollysteers I also like a finer cotton.

I don't understand why so many people think "ooh it's a nice thick t-shirt" when I'd prefer to wear something light!

...And I haven't found any recently either.

I like simple stripes and have a classic striped top brought out every summer bought in France in the 1970s. It’s a lovely fine cotton and I have been trying to replicate it, even though it’s still going, with three quarter sleeves, it’s perfect.

Even on holiday in Biarritz this year, I couldn’t find it, even though the shops were full of striped tops. Usually thicker material or too close fitting.

I once wore a red t shirt with Jasper Conran in tiny tiny white letters on it. My sister;
“Oh, I NEVER wear anything with writing on the front!”😁
Since then, I never have.

I don't like the ones that have words/symbols on if they have stripes. I have just found some like this!🙅‍♀️

I really do like my stripes to be just stripes!

I recently sent all my Joules tops to the charity shop. Not only were they a bit tight, every second person here seemed to be wearing them. wink

I think the success of the true Breton shirt is that it can be worn by everyone - men, women and children alike. It is simple, sporty and has that certain holiday vibe.

I read this thread yesterday and decided they just had to go to the charity shop. The simpler better ones I have packed in my case ready to take on holiday in a fortnight's time.

The go to uniform for older ladies! ,,,,I don’t think so. Not here anyway.

Aveline Fri 25-Aug-23 15:12:57

Oh yes. Clothkits. Happy days

I stopped wearing stripes, including with added flowers from Joules, several years ago. I was sitting in a M&S cafe next to a mother and child, to keep the child occupied she was counting ladies with striped tops, and she very quickly got to 20. I noticed most were wearing Skechers too.

😂
The go to uniform for older ladies?

Foxygloves Fri 25-Aug-23 13:18:15

Oh don’t get me started on the joy that was Clothkits!
Those little T shirt dresses with matching knickers, the scandi- look knitted dresses with coordinating woolly tights .The corduroy pinafores with coordinating jumpers AND tights
And there was stuff for me too!
I loved the fact that everything came in 3 or 4 colourways, with three daughters they each had their own- D1 usually had the bright primary shade, D2 the softer blue or maybe purple and D3 the pastel option. And of course the quality was so good everything could be passed down and lasted for years.
(Goes off into nostalgic dreams…🌤🌤🌤)

There was a Cloth kits knitted dress that did the rounds in our group. It appears in lots of photos with lots of different children wearing it - including 2 of our daughters. I have no idea who bought it - might have been me! There was also a pink corduroy pinafore dress that appears quite a lot.

There is no hope for me - I've just ordered 2 Boden stripy tops.

SachaMac Fri 25-Aug-23 11:49:30

I quite like a black and white or navy and white stripe T shirt but don’t like the Joules type stripey/floral look.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 25-Aug-23 11:41:34

Loved the mention of Clothkits. I have a picture of me in a striped pale blue and white tee shirt and my 2 girls as tiddlers on the Isle of Wight.
They are in their 40s now. But they lived in Clothkits clothes. Such good quality. Two beautifully printed knitted dresses were eventually passed on to a friend's daughters and again onto others afterwards. Sorry to derail for a moment.

No stripes for me either. Always remind me of deckchairs.

Florals, polka dot or plain.

pascal30 Fri 25-Aug-23 10:39:59

I've never worn stripes.. I like a mix of plain, similar tone colours

Redhead56 Fri 25-Aug-23 08:46:21

Forgot to add I dislike animal prints too.

Redhead56 Fri 25-Aug-23 08:45:29

I never wear striped clothing I dislike stripes and always have. Floral is more me in natural colours that can be worn all year around.

Abitbarmy Fri 25-Aug-23 08:45:02

My DH says horizontal “stripes” aren’t stripes but hoops if ever I describe them as such. Pedant!

aggie Fri 25-Aug-23 08:43:24

I’ve just packed my case for a few days away , all floral or striped T-shirts !
I look awful in solid colours ! I wear floaty scarves with solid colour jackets and coats to break them up !
