Can I ask you which sites/shops you use for fashion and styling inspiration? So many sites for "older women" are aimed at 50yrs, even Gransnet does this. It's 20 yrs since I was 50 and I am in need of a new look. Any suggestions ?

Love this post! Made me laugh out loud and I’m still smiling….thank you

p0Sy That's what I used to use online style websites for - if you can find someone who has a similar colouring and shape it's like having a personal catwalk in your living room. Sometimes other people just put things together in a way I wouldn't think of and provide a bit of inspiration. Even if their style is very different to mine it's still interesting seeing how they put colours together and accessorise.

Marydoll & Blossoming - I'm so pleased to hear this thread has cheered you up, that's lovely.
Posy, I love the sound of a wardrobe edit, I will look into it but I'm not sure I could bear the embarrassment at someone eyeing over my rag, tag and bobtail collection of clothes. Delighted to hear it worked for you, what a thoughtful gift.

DH has just bought me a dress from Seagrass. 💕

I’ve just had a look, I really like the interchangeable crossbody bag straps, what a good idea - I’m very tempted.

My task for today is to take a note of these sites!

My daughter bought me a 4 hour wardrobe edit with a stylist for my upcoming 'big' birthday. I was incredibly nervous ( visions of someone disdainfully plucking items from my cupboards ) but she was amazing. Very little thrown out and my suggested shopping list was accessories - scarf, belt, chunky jewellery. She put things together in different ways and organised my clothes into things that go together. As an example, one dress that I had ( black, oversized jersey, Oliver Bonas) that I honestly haven't worn for 2 to 3 years is now a go to with leggings or coloured tights (I buy Snag) white shirt or a thin long sleeved tee underneath. She added a scarf, a snood chunky necklace to show how it could be dressed up for meetings/ socialising or down for the school run.

Thank you for starting this thread, I’m really enjoying looking up all the sites being suggested. I can’t get out and about at the moment and this has given me a real lift.

You and me both, Blossoming. 💐

I ordered short jeggings from M&S. I am 5ft tall and I had to cut three inches off them today, their sizing is not consistent.

BrightandBreezy Wed 18-Oct-23 23:08:09

For jeans, jeggings and leggings it's M & S. I'm just 5 ft tall so their short range is a perfect fit. For knee length dresses, often fit and flare, which I wear with opaque tights and ankle boots, I am finding a lot I like in Fatface. They are probably meant to be worn shorter but, being short, they usually land on or an inch above the knee, which seem to suit me at 71.

Now to watch the video on boots which Casdon kindly posted

Well I agree it's trivial in the great scheme of things but at times like these it's a bit of froth and trivia that keeps us sane. We all need some light relief and sitting around looking like a sack of spuds with a face to match won't make one jot if difference to the state of the world. I do my bit with volunteering and campaigning but we all need laughter and a bit of glamour to lift our spirits and save ourselves from despair.

The only things I buy in M & S are knickers. I am 5'2 size 12. M & S dresses drag on the floor on me and they don't do much in the way of petite fittings any more. I like Seasalt and White Stuff best, but will buy from supermarkets or anywhere that catches my eye, I don't worry about things being 'suitable for my age'. I am 72, live in leggings and jeggings most of the time with tunic tops. Dresses have to be short (I have good legs) I wouldn't be seen dead in a midi skirt!

It is when the world, whether the wider world or one's personal world, is troubled that you most need the resource of trivial matters.

I totally agree, Monica.
Posting on this thread, doesn't mean I am not shocked and horrified about what is happening in the Middle East.
My life is pretty problematic at the moment and GN is a welcome distraction from my troubles.

Well, this has been an entertaining and delightful read. I have a long list of all the recommended sites and shops and will be having a thorough trawl through them. I think my problem is I have no "eye" for clothing and even less for accessorising so I always look a bit flat. I've never enjoyed shopping I always find it overwhelming. I've friends who go to charity shops or TKMax and can see almost instantly things that will "work" for them. All I see are huge racks of stuff without a clue where to start. It was easier when I was working, I could see what others were wearing and when trends were changing but now I've retired I don't see the mix of people I used to and have got stuck in a rut. I don't make the effort to go to the nearest city to see what's out there but make do with local shops. My "wardrobe" is mainly a mix of M&S trousers, Tesco jumpers, Roman /Seasalt/Weird Fish/Next tunics, tops and dresses. It's all a bit meh. I make an effort with my hair and get it cut & coloured regularly. I'm an average build 5'4", size 14. Footwear with dresses has been giving me some grief but I see plenty of you have embraced short boots/doc martins and similar so I need to give it a go. I know shoes are quite a dated look now but boots, unless knee length, feel odd to me. Anyway thank you all again for your help, it's good to share. I wasn't expecting much response on this thread as the Style and Beauty section hadn't seen much activity recently but it's good to see so many who still care about looking vibrant and making a statement about who they are. Thank you again.

I think that posting about clothes / fashion / make up etc can be deemed a bit (a lot) trivial in the light of world troubles - but it is a minor distraction from all the horrors

LucyAnna Wed 18-Oct-23 15:46:17

The grey one has sold out!! smile

They did have a lovely purple coat though! A soft shape, almost like a big cardigan with cravats. Sadly the colour didn't work for me.

cc Wed 18-Oct-23 15:36:04

I'm finding M&S pretty useless at the moment, I can usually find everyday trousers but this year they are either very wide legs, or too short. There were a few that looker fine but their sizing seems to have changed again this year and the waists were very tight but the thighs very baggy. The person doing the returns said that quite a few people had commened on this recently.

This might help in your boot quest Greyisnotmycolour, she’s reviewing boot styles.

If you put "YouTube Haul" in Google you will get a cross section of what people have picked from this seasons offering from various brands. I would suggest you don’t go for age (unless you like their style).

You can then follow and they will show you a variety of clothes. The best will show you how to work your wardrobe. Some are really just showing you what they like.
