Can I ask you which sites/shops you use for fashion and styling inspiration? So many sites for "older women" are aimed at 50yrs, even Gransnet does this. It's 20 yrs since I was 50 and I am in need of a new look. Any suggestions ?

I think it’s lovely!

I have a friend for whom Country Collection is just her style but as long as we have known her and her late husband we have always thought them born a generation too late and having more in common in life style with our parents than us - and we have known them since the 1960s.

Mind you my mother would never have worn CC, she was far too stylish a dresser!

I am 73 but feel 50 ( but not today as I have a virus)
However, I have had a shopping free year as I realised in January that I had far too many clothes, some never worn. So all I have bought this year is one bra, liberating!!!!
My go to shops are Next, White Stuff ( sales only) Phase Eight ( sales only) Tu at Sainsbury’s , M&S sometimes , John Lewis sometimes. I wear what I like and what I feel comfortable in . My daughter bought me a pair of denim dungarees for Christmas last year!!! Brilliant. I don’t wear heels due to netball ankle injury, love my black patent doc Martin boots. Have no intention of dressing as an old lady

A lot of clothing is so long now. I was always 5 feet 8 inches but have recently lost 2.5 inches. I am looking for a new winter coat and found a lovely one in Next but it is nearly down to my ankles. Perhaps I should be looking at Petite ranges but I am quite long in the torso and arms so I don’t think that is the answer.

Sorry,I am referring to Lighthouse.

Phew 😂

I like clothes from most of mentioned places but I’m quite mean about buying. Tending to trawl sales for things that I like rather than what I feel is age appropriate.
Masai is a favourite brand of mine. They always seem to have something I like and Fat Face too.

I have bought from them .Clothes are good quality and
customer service second to none.

LucyAnna Tue 17-Oct-23 15:22:39

But that’s what some clothing companies seem to think that’s what we want / that’s what we should be wearing confused

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 17-Oct-23 15:19:13

No way!

Wear whatever you like. M&S has improved dramatically over the last couple of seasons and sell other labels too. I like Uniqlo for cashmere and White Company as the items are understated and nice fabrics (although the quality of materials used is not as good as previously). The design is still good however.

I don’t see why clothes which suit 50 year olds should be deemed unsuitable for 70 year olds.
Dress for your body shape, dress for the relevant occasion, dress for your colouring, but most of all, wear what makes you feel good.
My now 48 year old D was horrified to find we had each bought the same “snowflake” jumper a couple of years ago
It didn’t stop me wearing it although I had to admit she looked better!

Wear whatever you like. I'm 70 and still in skinny jeans, tee shirts, baggy sweaters, and of course smart jackets. Trainers and boots, and beanies on top. I'm tall and a size 10 which helps but honestly I wore the same style in my 20s. Do lots of walking to keep me trim.
So go for whatever takes your fancy.

I'm 65 and never have problem looking for clothes that suit me. I go for the Largenlook and shop high end clothes. Oska.Vetona Grizas,Sahara etc. Mostly online, although can find in Fenwick stores. Unsure if Fenwicks are a big chain but we have one in Kent and have seen one in York. I sorted my wardrobe out 5 years ago and now everything I have goes with everything else. I find it do easy. When I notice clothes aren't being worn by me I take them to a fabulous preloved(high end )shop and re sell them. Also have a look there too for myself and buy there too. I think at some point as we get little bit older it's best to buy onegood item rather than several because they will last longer. All this wear and throw is not good . Recycling clothes is a wonderful way forward. I also disagree with some of the comments about MS being frumpy, MS has changed recently and has good designers on board. But an MS store will only stock where its situated for the customers it attracts in that area. So bigger stores, or online might be best to shop in.

I’m 73 ….weigh 9.5 st…….and wear what I like …which tends to be jeans with nice coloured tops …short jackets ( bomber usually) …leather trainers or boots in winter . Never sandals …never heels ( bad back) never ‘tights’ or stockings ….my 46 year old daughter has been known to ‘borrow’ my clothes …..(never returned). My 16 and 11 year old grandkids call me ‘cool’ and never seem ashamed to introduce me to their friends . Good enough for me.

Glenfinnan Tue 17-Oct-23 13:20:40

I love dresses … but all these puffy sleeves do nothing for me… hope this trend finishes soon!!

It's funny that so many Gransnetters think M&S is frumpy. My very stylish daughter and friends (mid 40's) are loving M&S at moment. Maybe it's how items are put together.

I suspect their feelings about M&S were formed several years ago, when M&S went through a really bad period style wise. It’s really improved in the last year, but if you’ve stopped going I guess you wouldn’t know that.

Bluedaisy Tue 17-Oct-23 13:04:31

So simply.com do beautiful Robell trousers among other things.
Kasbah (online) do some nice things, also Ulla Popken if you are like me a plus size lady.

I paid £40 for a wedding outfit on Vinted that is still on sale at John Lewis for £179 it had been worn once, I was thrilled with it

Valkimob Tue 17-Oct-23 12:48:00

Beautiful

nadateturbe Tue 17-Oct-23 12:40:06

There's a shop called Gerard/Vogue (on fb) which sells bright clothing. Good prices. They do trousers in different lengths. I've bought some recently. Haven't washed yet so can't comment on quality.

This is an interesting thread and so nice to see ladies taking trouble with their clothes whatever their age. I’d like to ask if anyone can recommend some smart, fashionable but comfortable trousers please? I have IBS and have occasional bloating. Also any ideas on shoes? I’ve got a couple of occasions this Winter and will need smart black shoes as modern as possible but also need them to be comfortable. In the Summer I wear sandals or trainers which are easier to find. Ideally I’d like something with a small heel that makes me look “dressed up.”

Mary Janes are fashionable at the moment. Seen on several catwalks for SS24. You don't need a heel to look dressed up.

Cid24 - thanks, just had a look at apartment trousers on Saint & Sofia. A bit pricey, but worth it if they fit well. 👍😎 Some colours/sizes are sold out though.
