Can I ask you which sites/shops you use for fashion and styling inspiration? So many sites for "older women" are aimed at 50yrs, even Gransnet does this. It's 20 yrs since I was 50 and I am in need of a new look. Any suggestions ?

I'm not so sure that DDs should be trusted to advise on their mother's clothes, if my friends who have daughters are an example. They want their mothers to look youthful which means wearing clothes similar to their own.

I'm pretty limited on what I buy in winter clothes as I'm allergic to wool, cashmere, and alpaca. Even a small amount mixed with acrylic results in a rash. Only problem I have buying on ebay is some things have the wrong label on like the cable jumper I recently bought that was labelled 100% acrylic and is cotton and wool mix. I'm knitting most of my jumpers myself now.

I’d never buy cloths from shop that caters for 70+ I buy what i like but not from any particular shop.

I used to buy clothes on eBay, but I’ve recently turned to Vinted. The only problem is that I see so many inexpensive pieces that I like, but don’t really need! 😂
A word of warning though - recently I went to collect a parcel from a locker (I’m barely 5’ tall and shrinking🙄). The courier had obviously thrown said parcel to the very back of the highest locker. There was no-one with me or around, (I hate asking for help anyway) so the parcel wasn’t collected. I did get a refund, but I really wanted the parcel!!
The daft part is that a low compartment can be requested when sending a parcel at a locker, but not when receiving. I’ve now armed myself with a long umbrella with a curved handle - useful for high shelves in shops, too.👍😎

I love Adini clothes and Sariska website is really good for them. Well made and washable and easy to take in or up if you need to.

Oh, me too. I need Suz and Trinny to sort me out!

I like Rundholz, Mama B, Studio B3, Lurdes Bergada and stuff like that. It's quite expensive but some turns up on eBay. The inspiring site is www.WalkersStyle.com or Blue Women's Clothing. (There are weird drop-crotch trousers on both those - far too many of them. Not something I'd wear but then I never wear trousers anyway!)

For me - Cotton Traders, Lands End , Sea Salt and Woolovers on line , White Stuff and very occasionally Edinburgh Wollen Mill High Street . No M and S now so don’t buy their stuff now . Don’t really need a lot as already got plenty of clothes and also over 70.

The special occasion is NOW, I never keep clothes for best anymore as that day may never come!

Saint and Sofia do some very nice , well made trousers/ they call them Apartment pants. They are comfortable and stylish . Elastic waist too!

I will be 70 in December and wear pretty much what I want as I always have. Recently I've gone completely BoHo and mostly wear long skirts and dresses in prints and plains, blouses and tops, loose wide leg trousers, boots or trainers, Snag tights when it's cold, wraps and shawls. I care not a fig what people think as I enter my Cronehood!

I have champagne taste and beer money! I like silk, cashmere and good quality cotton. Best buy a few years back was a sky blue silk shirtwaister , classic, for £12.50 and still wearing it with black velvet skirt or trousers for singing as a soloist. Fits in everywhere, never dates and looks good with black velvet trousers. sometimes find something good in charity shops. Use seasalt for good quality t shirts , bought their wide leg yellow culottes in the sale and they were meant to be 7,/8ths length. On me they are just fine. The thing is to be comfortable in what you are wearing, choose what you think is fine in the morning, put it on and forget about it. I mostly wear trousers with t shirt and jacket or jumper in the day. comfortable to be able to do whatever I planned and then at night have a few special things for going out or singing etc. Many many years ago I used to do a bit of modelling , and was told then, to dress well, check makeup and seams or lengths of clothes before you went out or on the catwalk. Then forget about them and concentrate on what you are doing . I have some clothes that I have had for more than 20 years !! Dont care what others are wearing I like these, only give a nod to fashion when I see that my clothes are now back in fashion again. I see what we used to call tank tops they are calling vests I think. Good luck finding what you like

I meant the special occasion jacket. I've bought some stuff on ebay, looking at mother of the bride category.
Smart clothes and attracted nice comments.

Mallin Tue 17-Oct-23 11:27:57

MrsKen: if you like M&S underwear get over to Matalan or if you have non common bra size, their on line site. Same quality and well under half the price. M&S are finished as a shop due to overpricing and poor quality frumpy crimplene type clothes. ( I’m nearly 80 and stopped buying their knickers in the 80’, when they started putting the crutch in the wrong place for a woman’s anatomy )

This is an interesting thread and so nice to see ladies taking trouble with their clothes whatever their age. I’d like to ask if anyone can recommend some smart, fashionable but comfortable trousers please? I have IBS and have occasional bloating. Also any ideas on shoes? I’ve got a couple of occasions this Winter and will need smart black shoes as modern as possible but also need them to be comfortable. In the Summer I wear sandals or trainers which are easier to find. Ideally I’d like something with a small heel that makes me look “dressed up.”

9228pauline Tue 17-Oct-23 11:27:27

oooh! where do you live? Love the jacket.

Milest0ne Tue 17-Oct-23 11:26:41

Look at the presenters on Rip Off Britain. I always admire their style.

NemosMum Tue 17-Oct-23 11:24:39

Seasalt - all shapes and sizes. Some really eye-catching, some not, but plenty to choose from in everyday wear.

Marydoll Tue 17-Oct-23 08:46:59

At 68, I find brands like White Stuff and Seasalt suit my shape.
Today I am wearing a Monsoon jumper dress for the first time, it needs a inch off it! I have shrunk to 5ft, but if I cannot find what I like in petite, I just take up the sleeves and hem.

M0nica Tue 17-Oct-23 08:37:36

The other problem, looking at the clothes in the photographs, is that it isn't just the clothes, it is how you look in them and what you match them with. - and also your posture and demeanour.

It is not uncommon for me, DDiL(53) and DGD(16) and me to be dressed in much the same clothes, leggings or stretch trousers and a loose top, but each with our differences. Bothe DDiL and DGd will be wearing DMs, I will be wearing chunky loafers or ankle boots, DDiL will be in black or other dark colours, I will have colour in what I am wearing, DGD will be wearing a top not dissimilar to mine. We all look fine.

OP, are you tall / short, what size are you? Do you love being out walking in the country / are you a homebody? Do you have childcare duties / do you work part time? I guess such things will affect what you wear? Do you like colour / pattern?

MrsKen33 Mon 16-Oct-23 19:10:30

I am 78 and quite tall.
I buy mostly from Seasalt, toast ( in their sale) or for underwear M& S, I have also bought some extremely good stuff from eBay, including a Loden coat last year.

Alice75 Mon 16-Oct-23 18:51:41

They sound good buys for you, annab - I like lime green and black. I personally find Seasalt quite frumpy - and certainly ubiquitous!

I love clothes, but haven’t been enamoured with many clothes shops recently. I’ve turned to Vinted where I’ve managed to buy a fair amount for very little cost (see the pics - total cost £26). I bought two items that weren’t suitable, but managed to re-sell them.

I love eBay - I have trawled through sites and found everything either too expensive or uninspired. A local store (now closed) used to sell Eastex but I dismissed the brand as being for old ladies, but now I am 70 I have rediscovered them. I bought a navy a line skirt by Eastex for £3 in a charity shop, having not worn a skirt for years and paired it with a blue and white striped top and a cute navy jacket/cardi. I felt put together for once! I have found a lovely Eastex black, white and lime blouse (vintage) and wore this with a mohair green jumper and black cords. I am enjoying the challenge of getting away from jeans and Seasalt!

Thanks, NanKate - the jacket hasn’t arrived yet, hope it fits and looks ok smile - but for £8, it won’t be a disaster if it doesn’t! Your floral jacket is lovely - you could wear it casual, or dressed up.
