Mindful shopping - when you know exactly what you want -but

I’ve had a picture in mind of my next bag for a while, so this afternoon I decided to find it, and order it. I wanted an everyday, leather, cross body, chestnut brown, saddle bag style bag big enough to take my purse, phone, house and car keys, pen etc. - so between 22cm and 25cm wide, with a phone pocket. Too much to ask! After two hours searching every potential website thrown up by Google and several others, I’ve found a compromise but I feel like I’ve run a mental marathon.

Is it just me - I don’t think I’m that fussy, but I always seem to want the one thing that eludes me.

Me too, LadyGaGa ! At the moment I'm trying to find a black crossbody bag, not too large, not too small. Sounds like it would be easy, but I'm still looking.

Oh my goodness there is a bag on that link that I would love to buy for my daughter, but won’t be able afford it. A beauty thank you Sago…..A lottery win might help.

I love the quest. It requires stamina and sticking power.

This bag?

I LOVE this bag ...... Where does it come from, please? I too am thinking of things for Mr R to get me for Christmas.

National Trust.
In brown leather.

That’s odd MOnica. I also have masses of books, on shelves, as does my husband, and their number doesn’t trouble me at all!

I a very particular about everything I buy, it has to pay for itself!
For bags my first stop is Tusting, (link at bottom).
Cashmere jumpers from the man on Masham market!
Jeans from NYDJ.
My feet love Geox, I am normally lucky at TKMaxx, I rarely pay more than £40..
I had a pair of Aigle wellingtons, I bought about 18 years ago, they were over £100 but I wore them to death, they needed replacing so earlier this year I got some Le Chameau I could not believe the price!
I will leave them to my daughter in my will!!!!
However I know I will not buy another pair of wellingtons in my life.
So basically buy good buy once, I look after all my clothes and accessories, I am still wearing a white shirt from 20 years ago and some of my NYDJ are over 10 years old.

One exception - I can never have too many books, but of course those are all neatly lined upon shelves by subject.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 22-Oct-23 21:50:08

I have a similar problem. I find having too much of anything quite troubling.

M0nica Sun 22-Oct-23 21:24:16

I get mommered if I have too muvh of anything, including clothes, so I only buy what I have a need for and know will fit in with everything else I have, and I tend to wear clothes in rotation to make sure that I wear everything equally.

Were I to have the amount of clothes DH has, most never worn, I would never manage to dress in the morning, I would be in such a state of confusion about what to wear.

When I am searching for a specific item I use image search rather than trawling every site.

Yes, I did that to start off my search, but they don’t give you the dimensions on the images, and part of my two hours was spent following up leads to no avail. Anyway, I’m happy at last with what I’ve gone for - the exact bag was for sale on eBay, but it was £16 more than the new manufacturer price, which just shows you have to be careful, wherever you’re buying from.
I’ll follow up on Sole Bliss and Ecco for my trainers, thanks for the suggestions.
I’m finding it’s definitely harder work buying mindfully, but it’s worth it when you do find exactly what you want, or at least the best available option out there, in the end.

I keep remembering my mother telling that any bloody fool can go shopping with a lot of money! Just lately I have had several amazing bargains from eBay. Well worth a look.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 22-Oct-23 19:39:38

I would agree GG if the items weren’t so cheap as to have probably originated from China, whose human and animal welfare rights record is appalling and which is fast making great inroads into our country. Mindless shopping for the sake of a moment’s pleasure, which is what I have witnessed recently, is doing huge damage to our country whilst supporting a very dangerous one, allied to Russia. Is a quick fix really worth it?

NotSpaghetti Sun 22-Oct-23 17:50:11

I have bought sole bliss "new in box" on Vinted at a massively discounted price.
You obviously need to know the size.

I bought some heels for a wedding and they wete super-comfy.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 22-Oct-23 17:50:02

I think that it’s up to the individual how they spend their money, if an item brings joy it’s nobody’s business.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 22-Oct-23 17:41:10

I had some hand me downs from cousins (I was an only child) and all other clothes were made by my Mum until I went to secondary school and had a bought uniform. Buying clothes just didn’t feature in my young life either as my parents weren’t well off.

TillyTrotter Sun 22-Oct-23 17:15:10

Your point is taken Germanshepherdsmum ,
but some of us may have grown up with wearing hand-me-downs from older sisters (I did) and take pleasure in choosing and buying clothes for myself now.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 22-Oct-23 17:00:54

I wish all clothes shopping was done mindfully. We have had a thread recently which shows it’s often buying for the sake of buying. I’m not an old curmudgeon, nor am I strapped for cash, but I think very carefully before buying anything - do I need it, how much wear will I get out of it, can I truly justify it? Every item of clothing I have - and there aren’t that many now that I’m retired- has had to justify its purchase.

TillyTrotter Sun 22-Oct-23 16:43:26

Sole bliss have some beautiful trainers but out of my price range. Why are they so expensive?

Have you looked at ECCO shoes/trainers? Well worth looking at, soft, stylish and very comfortable.

Georgesgran Sun 22-Oct-23 13:29:35

You’ve set me thinking Casdon that I might take a trip to the Barbour factory, sooner rather than later! It’s not too far away from me and as well as a full-price perfect selection, there’s an enormous factory shop of slight seconds - a man on a galloping horse wouldn’t be able to spot the fault.

NotSpaghetti Sun 22-Oct-23 13:27:24

Apologies - I hadn't really clocked that this was a "handbag" thread!

Casdon Sun 22-Oct-23 13:22:52

That bag is lovely Jaxjacky, I’d guess green bags that are exactly what you want are even harder to find than tan ones!

I think LadyGaGa is right, the perfect bag doesn’t exist, although we keep trying. When I’ve regathered my strength I’m going to look for some smart navy trainers which will accommodate wide feet with a bunion on one foot only - it’s like seeking the Holy Grail.
