I am 70 but still like to keep my hair nice I have dark brown hair with quite a lot of grey at the sides and through the rest of my hair , but in recent years have kept it highlighted so looks blonde which I love .
My hairdresser has now put the price up for colour , toner, cut and blow dry to £100 ,I have short hair so the cut is every 6 weeks and colour every 10 weeks , but being retired I really can’t afford that but hate the thought of dark hair😪 any suggestions welcome thanks

Go on Facebook and look up haircut and colour models. You can get free or very discounted. I paid £30 for colour at Daniel Galvin. The next time is free because it’s for an exam. I had a brilliant free cut there

baylayage (with foils)

It sounds a lot less painful 🙂

I didn’t think anybody used the cap pull through method anymore. My hairdresser has used foils for years….🤓

I haven't had it done for years and haven't taken much notice; I'll ask my new hairdresser.

It was an effective method, though, if painful, because the strands pulled through were tiny and the end result very natural looking.

Yes I do remember having it done. I think it was back as far as the 80s and it was bloody painful…😳

Fabulous hair Norah, is that straight from the salon or can you style it like that yourself?

I stopped having my hair highlighted when the lockdowns came but they had long abandoned the awful caps Callistemon, using foils instead. Those caps were torture, guaranteed to give you a headache - and I remember one hairdresser who pulled the hair really painfully through the holes (perfect job for a sadist!).

That's all I could remember. The first time I had it done was with a cap and I swear he used a needle to pull the strands through. Torture!
The next time wasn't so bad but it shows how long since I had highlights or low lights.

I am so lucky with my hairdresser. She was so patient with me after lockdown and tried various things till I was happy. Now she just combs colour through, shampoo, good cut, quick finish for £68, usually done in just over an hour. I have short thinning hair but she knows how to make it look its best, sticking with my natural light brown colour. ( I shall let it fade eventually, I guess. ) She also doesn’t chatter mindlessly or try to push products.

That picture is of hair my hairdresser mimics, I'd not be able to take a picture of the back of my head. My hair falls same to the model. I've silver hair, as the model, since I was 40, before the blonde baylayage (with foils).

We were living in NYC with my brother, awaiting successful surgery, I was moaning about my hair. My brother came home from work with a picture and asked to treat me to a spa day - something suitable to my hair (he was tired of my moaning I suppose and he has a good eye to all things regarding women). The stylist was excellent with my fine hair, voila.

Norah

Have you considered letting it go silver?

I've a bob, blonde baylayage worked into the silver.

I had to look up baylayage, Norah, I'd never heard of it, is it a new technique?
How long does it last?

It looks lovely, but my hair is shorter than yours (just had it cut from a bob as it didn't work) and I'm not sure it would be suitable on shorter hair.

Perhaps I should think about the auburn low lights as I had many years ago. Perhaps they don't use those awful caps any more.

Can you put a box dye on bleached dyed hair ?

No .....you need a good toner to neutralise.....you risk going brassy orange

I’m with Monica here. I’m 72 and use Superdrug’s semi- permanent lightest brown colour. It is the most natural looking colour I have found. The permanent colours are a block shade which I think make you look older.

I’ve got hardly any hair left. It’s always been thin but now it’s almost non existent. But my hairdresser still charges me the same for a trim as she charges for someone that takes at least ten times longer. So I just don’t bother any more. Just chop a bit off every now and again and have a wig to wear if I need to look presentable!

DH doesn't have a wash and blowdry (!) and a trim costs him £10.

Try looking for a cheaper one, or be honest with them tell them you can't afford that price, sadly you won't be coming back. You never know they might do a special price for you?
Worth asking?

I recently bumped into a lady I know who was out shopping with her DD and teenage GD - all three had beautiful grey hair. My friend's was darkest grey and shortest. GD was silvery grey and longest. Apparently GD dyed hers grey when her Mum decided to stop dyeing hers. My friend has been grey for quite a few years anyway. They all looked fabulous.

hollysteers Fri 03-Nov-23 16:33:11

Why don’t you try a box colour in a light shade? My bf colours her own hair light auburn with Nice and Easy, a lovely colour, but has a good cut at a salon.
I have greying brown hair, but have it trimmed and coloured with highlights at the same salon (£60) I stretch the time I visit by using a brown root spray and a brown hair mascara wand.
During lockdown, I returned to the colour I had as a young un, dark brown box colour, but it was ageing.

silverlining48 Fri 03-Nov-23 16:29:47

To have the full works at a local salon is well over £100.

silverlining48 Fri 03-Nov-23 16:28:30

I don’t have mine coloured anymore as it’s very porous and fades quickly. I used a 5 minute wash in colour from Superdrug this week and it’s gone a strange shade if pinky orange n the top layers. Don’t like it so will probably keep my grey/ white natural colour

Lovetopaint037 Fri 03-Nov-23 15:17:45

I’m 82 and still have about 90%of my own colour. However, my eyebrows are grey which is strange. I agree about dyed hair looking odd with an old face. For years people have suggested I have dyed hair. Some have looked in disbelief when I say I don’t do anything to it. If and when I get more grey it will be as it is.

BlueBelle Fri 03-Nov-23 13:40:10

This is my now natural colour

Callistemon21 Fri 03-Nov-23 13:11:55

And - I just went to a different salon which offers reduced rates for senior citizens (it's very modern too) and I'm pleased with the cut.

Try going au natural, ruthiek

You might be surprised and really like the silver high.ights through the brown.
Mine's dark brown and going a bit silver at the sides (at last); I thought of having low lights as my hair used to have auburn lights but has gone darker over the years.
But the cost is just too much for the benefit.
