The TuTu Skirt?

In the Guardian (5 April) there was a fashion item pointing up the latest trend in skirts: the TuTu Skirt, an adapted ankle length, chiffon, lightweight fabric affair, layered and NOT sticky-out like a traditional ballet skirt.

Hmmm.....can't see it making much impact among the masses unless the masses are 6' tall plus and as thin as a stick of celery. Certainly wouldn't work for me: 5'1" and dumpy Bramley apple-shaped! It looked ultra stylish on the model in the accompanying pic but she looked all of 21, size 4 and veering into the anorexic zone. No, no, no.

The beige and black is beautiful Holly

I love them and think they are so feminine (if that’s not a dirty word these days..)
In fact I have the beige and black spotted skirt upthread and a burgundy one I am wearing for music recitals. I wouldn’t go near a short one however!

Joseann, I adore that colour!

NotSpaghetti Sat 06-Apr-24 11:21:01

Here's a beautiful one!

I agree, the shorty ones are more for fun and partying. Definitely for the young.
The longer ones are quite romantic in a way. Could be a wedding or cruise outfit?

The original classical tutu has a rather unfortunate etymology. It is thought to come from the French, and is a cheeky (!!) word for bum, bottom or arse! Cucu.

Skirt. Not dress!

MissAdventure Sat 06-Apr-24 10:46:38

I love the pic with the sweatshirt over the dress.
It isn't body hugging either.

The gauzy, shorty ones are a different story.

I like the long ones, but I think they only suit the young and slim - not me!

MissAdventure Sat 06-Apr-24 10:38:52

I've always worn almost that kind of skirt.
I think they're lovely, and I like all of those photos, too.

NotSpaghetti: yes, that's it! I imagine you can only make a skirt like that work if you only eat 1 digestive biscuit per week. Sad, because they do look elegant.......

BlueBelle Sat 06-Apr-24 09:22:29

Ohhhh do you think so I think that looks awful joseann not sure if that was a tongue n cheek post or you really think it looks ok

Joseann Sat 06-Apr-24 09:12:34

grin

Sarah Jessica Parker smashed it though!

M0nica Sat 06-Apr-24 09:11:20

Well, it looks lovely on my 17 year old granddaughter.

Not every fashion suits everybody so, if we have any sense, we pick and choose what suits us best.

BlueBelle Sat 06-Apr-24 09:02:34

It’s getting worse as the photos come on ….no no no I m not a ‘frilly dresser upper’ even when young don’t like candy floss

Joseann Sat 06-Apr-24 08:53:43

I've found one to suit your dumpy Bramley apple style mae13. You could ask if it comes in green!

I love the look and the young me would have worn them. I look back wistfully at all my fabulous mini/maxi skirts now.

Joseann Sat 06-Apr-24 08:44:05

Found it ..... Chanel Spring/Summer this year.

Joseann Sat 06-Apr-24 08:40:04

I'm ballet obsessed, so bring it on. I think it will feel light and floaty in the summer, if we ever get one. It's not a proper tutu though. I had several hand made and the tulle pleating is boxed and layered pretty much from the waist to make it stick out.
I would wear the ones in the photos with pumps.
I think I saw either Dior or Chanel have an upcoming fashion show with some creative pieces like that.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 06-Apr-24 08:39:27

I really like them, disclaimer I have several gauzy maxi skirts I wear on holiday.

DD1 has a skirt like this. I love it and tried it on…..if only I wasn’t 74! If she ever discards it I will take it to wear around the house. 😂

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 06-Apr-24 08:25:32

I think that they look lovely. Sadly, I would not look lovely wearing one...

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 06-Apr-24 08:23:45

Love them but I’m an overweight 5 feet 2 inch old/elderly lady!

Juliet27 Sat 06-Apr-24 08:21:13

I was just thinking YorkLady ….if only I was 50 years younger!

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 08:15:15

YorkLady

If only I was young again 😂😂. Don’t like the white, but the other two women look great.
Surely you must all remember a fashion item you had that made your parents disown you!!! 😂

I too like that look, but certainly wouldn't work for this 5ft tall, dumpy old lady! grin
