Fashion for short, overweight woman

My daughter and I are going to Paris for a few days in May, and while I am not a fashionista confused, I would like a bit of style for this trip. I am a bit less than 5 feet tall, and size 16 (71 years of age). My ideal look would be like the clothes Sally Lindsay wears on the tv show Madame Blanc, but I'm not sure where to find those billowy jackets etc.

If you are short, then you could wear a one-colour dress with a contrasting cardigan or jacket over it. Ideally knee-length or slightly longer. Or, similarly, trousers and top of the same colour. Do not wear patterns as they are rarely flattering. Perhaps a long necklace to elongate your look. Have a wonderful time.

ain't google wonderful www.shopyourtv.com/madame-blanc-mysteries/

I make all my own clothes so can't comment on where to find suitable outfits. However, I'm very surprised at the comment that you should not wear patterns as they are rarely flattering. I completely disagree and most of my wardrobe and fabric stash are gorgeous colourful patterns. I am always complimented on my outfits. I wear clothes that bring me confidence and joy.

Be careful with shipping costs, it’s an American site.

My cousin who is same height as you but larger size buys a lot from Kasbah online. They do lots of floaty kaftans etc.

Thanks for additional tips. I found the website Greenlady102 on another device and may order a few things. My daughter lives in America and is coming to visit next month (hence the Paris trip!)

You need to be looking at petite ranges I’m 5.1 and if you under 5.3 then you need petite clothes lots of ranges do them go and try a few companies and then send back what you don’t like a nice dress jacket can go over dresses and skirts and trousers try work your clothes to go with lots of different items lay them on your bed to see what goes with what and get yourself a couple of scarves for your neck. I’ve a couple of silk ones I wear around my neck but can also go over my shoulders should they be a chill.

Hello schnakie I am an inch or so taller than you, and same dress size.
I don’t wear clothes that cling and also avoid voluminous clothes as I don’t think they flatter the short and the wide-ish.
I would suggest you go somewhere like Next who do petite clothes which would fit you/us, or m and s petite, and try a few things on.
I hope you have a lovely holiday with your girl in Paris. I am seeing mine in Berlin tomorrow.

Was curious so had a quick peek at Sahara, way above my budget.

N4nna Tue 23-Apr-24 12:16:34

Try a different web browser.

ExDancer Tue 23-Apr-24 12:21:42

You have to be careful with petite sizes, some - like Next - are in proportion, but others are just 'standard' size with an inch or two cut from the hem, so we end up with the waist somewhere down at hip level. I used to like M&S but the range there has deteriorated recently
I am also under 5ft and steer clear of dresses for that reason, finding separates easier. I've also settled for never being able to look elegant.
When we were in Paris a few years ago I can't say I thought the women looked particularly well dressed at all. Many were meticulously made up though and they held themselves well and walked tall.

SillyOma Tue 23-Apr-24 13:02:06

I am under 5ft too but slightly smaller size. I have some M&S midi dresses (maxi on me) one black and one light grey they great with a wedge trainer and quite roomy. Can dress up or down. Comfy wide trousers with a loose floaty top. Marks have a few things just now unfortunately they seem to have done away with their good petite range. Another good option is Debenhams petite range. I am also 71. Enjoy your trip and have fun.

SallyatBaytree Tue 23-Apr-24 14:50:15

Sahara London worth a look. Loose but elegant ..however they may be too long and require alteration! Also Poetry have beautiful clothes, again in my opinion they are for fuller figure [ I.e. not slim cut ,or cinched in waists etc]

Have a eonderful holiday

Sarnia Tue 23-Apr-24 15:01:34

Try Shein. It's in the same bracket as the Daily Mail for some GN's but, speak as I find, I have never had a problem with them and they have so much choice for all shapes and sizes. Very reasonable too. Enjoy Paris.

DeeAitch56 Tue 23-Apr-24 15:02:27

I like Kit & Kaboodal & Lagen look clothing and I’m a similar age and proportions

Sssd Tue 23-Apr-24 15:09:24

Im similar proportions but with massive boobs too. I dont like anything too long and floaty, that style just drowns me.

albertina Tue 23-Apr-24 17:36:51

I had pretty much given up on myself until I read these posts and came to see that there are clothes out there for a larger lady like me that I can feel good in. I have never managed to lose the covid weight.

..

What a wonderful find.

Clever you!

Hope the o.p. finds something to dazzle Paris!
