There’s a GNet article about best primers to buy but the cheapest is around £25, so can anyone recommend one that’s around £10 or under and does the job well?

Having worked for years as beauty consultant there are many cheaper versions that are just as good . Boots no7 are good value as is L’Oréal. And as for mascaras I’ve tried so many and always go back just recently to a new one from Avon

I use Look Fabulous Forever face primer which is transparent but it’s not cheap. Whoever would want something white? Shades of Elizabeth I!

I'm 79 and have used a cheap primer with no makeup on top. I got compliments. The more you put on, the more awful the skin looks.

I agree, I usually wear very little on my skin as it can make me look as if I'm wearing a mask. If I'm making more of an effort for a special occasion I use a light concealer in the correct colour where necessary. As I have dry skin I find that makeup including powder eyeshadow will stay put without primer and I use a mascara that doesn't smudge.
When I was younger I always used MAC or Laura Mercier primers which worked all day, but these are obviously outside the £10 price range - worth it for me when I was too busy to check my makeup though.

Are the recommended primers white or clear? I bought a Fix & Protect primer in boots which is thick and white, really like poly filler and hated it, but then found Smashbox Original Photo Finish Primer which is clear and so smooth to apply, I love that one, but it is expensive. Would love to find something like that but cheaper.Any idea of which ones fit that description?

I agree. I just use primer over moisturiser and sunscreen. I think foundation on older skin looks dreadful, very false.

I use Urban Decay eye primer as it’s flesh coloured (some are white), very effective and not tested on animals.

Do you mean paint or makeup primer?

So did I! I always use Dulux!

Superdrug and Boots are your friends. You can see all the various skin care and make up from less expensive to the more spendy variety, try them and maybe get some advice too.

Boots 17 do a really good primer, around £4. DD and I swear by it.

Just found it in Boots Redhead.

I used to buy Gosh velvet touch about £12 can’t always get it in shops now. I bought W7 Magic face primer £4.95 Amazon it’s just as good. It keeps skin feeling soft and makeup in its place not tested on animals and suitable for vegans.

Thanks for this recommendation Redhead, will only buy cruelty free. But then again I don’t like Amazon! 😳

I bought a Primer online and it was about £26. It was from Look Fabulous Forever (🤣some hopes!🤣) and there didn’t seem to be much in the container.

I have since bought one from Avon which was around a fiver and it is just as good.

You won’t regret it Poppyred. No more disappearing or migrating eye makeup, even in the heat.

Eye primer really makes a difference in helping your eyeshadow and liner stay put, Poppyred.

Might give it a try on the eyes then. I have very greasy skin so even eye make up never stays put. (Will use up my face primer). 😂

Never heard of eye primer.

Maybeline Baby Skin Primer. A little goes a long way and very affordable.

Just dashed on here for a mo as I have to go to work now, to say thanks for the recommendations 😃
Gives me several to choose from.
For those who don’t know or use make up, a primer goes on after moisturiser and before make up and makes a helluva difference, try it!😄 A kind friend gave me an expensive one to try but there’s no way I can continue at that price.

I've used several primers, Clarins, This Works but my favourite is the Trinny. My make up always looks better if I use a primer, stays on well and I get a good even coverage. I'm 75 so any help that I can get from a bit of make up. None of the ones I use have been cheap but I only use a tiny amount so they do last a long time. fwiw I always have found the Boots no 7 range good value for money.

Poppyred Thu 16-May-24 07:35:45

I have seen no difference at all when using a primer, just another way for make up companies to make extra money.
