Are jeggings really out of fashion?

I’ve been having an initial sort out of my wardrobe and I confess I’ve got at least 40 pairs of various coloured jeggings! I know, it’s disgusting but some are years old, some newer but I just don’t wear anything out!

I will wear some in winter with boots I suppose and I’m just dipping a toe into wide legs but I’m loath to just give a lot of money to charity shops. At my age, if they come back into fashion in a few years, I might be too old to wear them! Has everyone ditched all leggings and jeggings?

I’m planning to go through everything and I’ve sorted loads out for charity shops - I’ve just been very silly buying and buying more and more clothes, shoes, sandals, boots etc etc but it’s so difficult to let go.

I was wondering how many of those now claiming they love their leggings/jeggings were several years ago swearing they'd never wear them and would stick to their boot-cut/ straight legged jeans?

I've been wearing jeggings for years. I've got a sage green pair on today with some sandals and a white longsleeve T. They looked nice and reasonably smart earlier for meeting friends for coffee and were comfy enough to do some gardening afterwards. If it (ever) gets really hot I'll trade them out for a maxi/midi skirt because they are cooler.

Well, certainly not me. I’ve been wearing leggings for as long as I can remember. They keep my arthritic knee warm. I don’t have to fumble with zips and buttons if I’m desperate for the loo ( key in door syndrome). If it’s really cold I wear walking trousers over the top of them. If I put weight on they still fit. I don’t have to worry that my Tena lady might slip out blush. My tunics cover my hips and thighs and I can wear extra layers under and over my tunic.. On the rare occasion that I do wear a long dress I wear 3/4 leggings in case my dress blows up ( I’ve noticed that my DIL does the same. When they get old I wear them for gardening. Most of them are cotton so they’re nice to wear when it’s hot. I only wear black or navy ones. I did buy some white ones to wear with a Seasalt blue striped tunic but it looked awful. Years ago I went to Asda to buy a new pair and there were none; I really panicked thinking they were out of fashion and would no longer be sold! In summer I wear 3/4 length with trainers and tunics but in winter I wear long ones and Ugg boots.

I wear them, and so do the kids (16-18 yrs) I work with. If you like them, s*d what anyone else thinks, wear them! I'm currently wearing a pair with a long length grey hoodie...

Dearie me, I seem to have become a dreadful dull old frump! I have just been considering buying some very reasonably priced dark denim jeggings on the Joules website. (They call them denim leggings.).

That’s two fashion crimes in one go, I think we need a poll of which shops and styles the trendy Gransnetter should be buying grin

If you like them and have the space keep them. If space is tight vac bag them . I wear all sorts of things that I buy from charity shops. Sometimes I try out a style and if it isn’t me it goes back to charity. I take a photo and see if it suits . If they are out of fashion lots of people here still wear them. Fashion can be fun , try a different style and see how you feel about the new look. It’s all personal preference.

I live in leggings and tunic tops
My legs are great my stomach not so and it’s a look that suits me and is comfortable
I don’t care much about fashion
I bet I’ve got 20 pairs of jeggings
theyre not as comfy as leggings and around here (cotswolds) people of all ages seem to wear leggings some with tops far shorter than is…. ahem… flattering, not to say decent!

I never wear leggings. I think they’re hideous and certainly don’t suit me, but if you find them comfortable and you like them, then wear them. My jeggings are not at all like leggings, they are more like slightly slimmer jeans.

I love my jeggings! They are great in the winter with boots and a long jumper or turned up with a long shirt in summer. I am under 5 ft and look and feel awful in baggy or wide leg trousers so I won’t wear them even if they are “ fashionable “

I agree with Aveline about the beige and it might be the same for light pink leggins, the girl I saw had a darker pink on. Its funny when you first see them though, I do agree.

Aveline Sun 02-Jun-24 21:20:41

rafichagran I get a fright if I unexpectedly see people with beige or pink leggings as they look like they're not wearing anything on their lower half!

Recovering hoarder here.
In answer to the OP 's comment about not giving loads of money to charity shops.... you wouldn't be, the money went wherever you bought the items, so it's long gone now.
I've given over 70 bags of clothes to charity shops since January (as well as over 50 boxes of allsorts of other stuff), I'm discovering a love for empty spaces (as is my dog). I've still got more than enough clothes to see me through the next few years, and will probably do another cull in September.
As for jeggings... I'm 56 and still wear them. They're comfy and I don't follow fashions or care what other people might say about something not being fashionable. I need to be comfortable!

If you like wearing them then do so. But have to say jeggings/leggings do nothing for you - they look awful regardless of shape or size. I’ve never worn either only jeans.

rafichagran Sun 02-Jun-24 19:54:55

I only wear black leggings, pink and beige are not for me, but I did see a very slim young person in pink leggins and a white top and they looked nice in her. Beige us to much lime a skin colour.

Aveline Sun 02-Jun-24 19:52:13

Occasionally I have an awful fright when a passer by is wearing beige or light pink leggings!!

Crazymum Sun 02-Jun-24 18:41:40

I wear my leggings for cleaning in ..with a baggy shirt .but when I went shopping with my friend to buy some for the first time , we got home to try them on. She knocked my door and said ..." oh god these things don't keep secrets do they...I feel as if I've only got my knickers on . My crotch is on view " which is just what I'd been thinking about them .that and some people have them stretched so tight they are nearly invisible.

rafichagran Sun 02-Jun-24 18:35:10

I am wearing faded leggins and a short top, I am digging the garden and planting.
Seriously though why the judgements like, look in the mirror, cover your big bum with a long top.
Yesterday I wore ripped jeans, a navy top and blue suede boots, I did not wear a long top. I have a average size bust, small waist and a big bum. I refuse to listen to narrow minded people telling me to cover it with long tops. It's how you wear your clothes and carry yourself, I am a 12/14 top and a 16 in trousers or jeans. I love my Curvy figure, and will never diet. I always feel good in my clothes.
I do not wear jeggins as I cannot stand the denim so close to my skin and they make me itch. That said OP wear your jeggins if you like them and they suit you.

Agree I don't own any....🤣

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 02-Jun-24 17:57:27

👍🏻

Madmother21 Sun 02-Jun-24 17:37:04

I agree Lottie Louise.. they look great on slim legs. But mostly I ask myself if people have mirrors at home!

maddyone Sun 02-Jun-24 15:52:52

They look best if you go up a size.

Nannan2 Sun 02-Jun-24 15:47:58

I got apr of smart ponte trouser ones from TU at sainsburys for hols and they are very smart indeed.

Nannan2 Sun 02-Jun-24 15:46:37

Love jeggings and now so does one of DD, I dont think its true they are only for skinny folk, so long as you wear your REAL size not smaller than you actually are, they look ok.Dont know about fashionable, but are comfy and convenient, so will keep wearing them.!

semperfidelis Sun 02-Jun-24 15:44:53

I have recently gone through all my leggings and jeggings. Any of them with fading dye or uneven patches on the knees have been either given to Charity shops or discarded completely. I do think they need replacing fairly often. I don't want to look like a complete scruff!

They still look ok with a smart tunic top, but not with any old bobbly sweater. (Not that I'm suggesting that Gransnetters wear those.)

The shops are full of trousers with wider legs. I like them, but I don't think they're very flattering on shorter people who are no longer very slim.

Wearing straight legged trousers and jeans, if you can find them, are a good compromise.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 02-Jun-24 15:32:55

I have no idea what jeggings are, but I do wear leggings under skirts or jeans in the winter to keep warm when I go out.

I am not particularly bothered by what is fashionable any longer. I just wear what suits me.
