Sleeves!

I’m really struggling, between ‘grown-on’ which make me look like a sumo wrestler and bunch up if you put anything on over them, batwing, which are impractical for actually doing anything and you can’t wear a jacket over, and loose cuffs, which get wet every time I wash my hands. I love fashion, I’ll try many different styles, but we seem to be in a totally impractical sleeves fashion phase at the moment. Is it just me, or have other people noticed too?

I sent for some ordinary t shirts but one has turned out to be more of a 'gipsy style' top with short, full gathered sleeves and elastic round the bottom.
It's still sitting in the packet, I didn't have the energy to send it back so keep staring at it, wondering what I can do with it.

Longer floaty or wider sleeves all seem to get soaked at the bottom if I'm washing up, even just washing my hands.

I'm hopeless with fashion.

Absolutely! Even "utility" shirts as tab rolled up sleeves won't fit under a jacket.
The occasional "bracelet" length is so welcome

Check out White Stuff (other brands are available)

Yes sleeves are difficult. I find that many are now too short and floaty ones get in the way and are impossible to wear under a cardigan. I get the ends of long ones wet , no matter how hard I try not to.I don't seem to be able to find the right ones.

My arms are big. I know many people with arms like mine won't wear sleeveless tops but I do because I know that many people with tattoos/wrinkles/skinny arms/flappy arms also won't wear sleeveless and in hot weather I'd rather be comfortable.

I think the most flattering sleeve length is three quarter length because the wrist is usually the most elegant part, so if I was going to a wedding or event where I was likely to be photographed i would wear a three quarter length sleeved jacket or dress.

For a long time now I have been wearing long sleeved vests or T shirts under dresses and tops as I have long arms and like my wrists covered. Also, so many tops have 3/4 length sleeves. I often buy them in Charity shops and have quite a collection in different colours. Originally bought them from Damart till prices went up but may be tempted by these: www.cottontraders.com/products/cosy-up-long-sleeve-boat-neck-top/AA15444013.html?src=QGL3&fix=1&source=pla&CAWELAID=320012860000023834&CAGPSPN=pla&utm_source=GoogleShoppingUK&country=uk&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAC808L65Z4FJBPUrIqtZ1DvxynLBy&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4NyFjrjghwMVX45QBh2DAiw9EAQYBSABEgIFMPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Whistles do a lovely classic TShirt in white or navy. Perfect for under a jacket.

Aldom Tue 06-Aug-24 15:14:56

Hobbs are also good for smart tops which can be worn under a jacket.

And Bella di Notte.

I like 3/4 length sleeves . I wear jewellery so I wear few nice bracelets and watch hate to have to move long sleeves just to see the time 🤣🤣

I agree, long sleeves are a pain! It's nice to have your wrist jewelry on show too!

GrauntyHelen Wed 07-Aug-24 12:24:57

I'm just glad there's more sleeves around as I hate my fat arms

I hope you will be as delighted with your Bella di Notte clothes as I am with mine. I actually received an order this morning. A gorgeous top and a lovely pair of pyjamas. The style, quality and fit are wonderful. smile

Agree with Aldom, Bella di Notte clothes are beautiful quality. I’ve had quite a few three quarter sleeve tops from them and just love them.

I prefer 3/4 length sleeves, I have quite short arms and full length sleeves are a nightmare. I have to keep pushing them up to stop them flapping over my hands.
I'm amazed and disappointed by the amount of sleeveless tops and dresses on sale by companies that traditionally market their range to older women. Maybe it's just me but I don't want to display my bingo wings and wrinkles - it just isn't a good look.

62Granny Wed 07-Aug-24 15:18:27

I am also a fan of 3/4 style, if something is short sleeve I prefer a cap style . I hate anything flapping down near my hands, as others have said it tends to get wet and in the way.

sandelf Wed 07-Aug-24 15:29:10

You are not alone! I sometimes wish there were more clothes for people who just want to look OK - not high fashion, not some gimmick or other to 'draw attention' from or to some feature.

4allweknow Wed 07-Aug-24 15:31:00

It's all those dropped shoulder tops, jumpers, that I find a nuisance especially wearing a jacket.

Glenfinnan Wed 07-Aug-24 20:18:16

I agree with all the above comments. I tend to buy long sleeves blouses/shirts and have them altered to bracelet or 3/4 sleeves. Hate these puffed sleeves … hopefully they will go out of fashion soon!

Same here.
And I can’t stand frilly sleeves or baggy ones.I like fitted looking sleeves of 3/4 style only.

Granmarderby10 Wed 07-Aug-24 22:56:50

I don’t wear jewellery and am pleased at the different sleeves on offer now because I’m not all that keen on my arms anymore.
I remember all these sleeves being in fashion in the mid 1970s through the 80s and the batwing I don’t recall it being difficult wearing jackets and cardigans etc with them.
Now all that needs to happen is for T-shirt designers to realise there are other necklines besides “crew neck” and some elbow length sleeves wouldn’t go a miss and with some colourful none-naff prints and not just boring old cream, black white.
Not much to ask, is it?😀

Nurseundercover Wed 07-Aug-24 23:38:51

I must admit I do like 3/4 length sleeves. M&S used to have lovely v neck t shirts with 3/4 sleeves but only sized up to 24, but were a snug fit. Anyone know of anywhere who sells similar in 26-28 T shirts would love to know.

Rosiebee Thu 08-Aug-24 07:35:41

I have two elbow length lightweight summer cardigans which I have worn to death over several years. Searched high and low for replacements but all cardigans have long sleeves even in summer. Mine came from Asda and Morrisons. I'd be happy to buy something a lot more expensive if I could find what I'm looking for.

Witzend Thu 08-Aug-24 07:39:30

For much of the U.K. summer I practically live in Seasalt ‘sailor’ stripey tops, which come in umpteen colourways and have sleeves to just below my elbow.
Pure organic cotton, too.
