Is “sexy” what you want to be in your mid-80’s?

My heart sank when I saw the headline “Dame Prue Leith sexed -up”
Dame Prue Leith has been “sexed up” to walk the runway in a latex dress for avant-garde eco-designers Vin + Omi
The Bake Off judge, 84, appeared in the duo’s 20th anniversary show, Moxie, in Kensington as part of London Fashion Week wearing a black latex dress with red stitching and matching evening gloves
Speaking before the show, Omi told The Telegraph: “You’re going to see Prue Leith like you’ve never seen her before, not in your wildest dreams.
“. Even her husband doesn’t know what she’s wearing, he’s going to be shocked but he’s going to love it. We’re gonna sex her up. “
He added that Dame Prue, a close friend of the pair, is “game for anything
Laying my cards on the table
1) I don’t think black latex is “sexy” - I think it looks tarty and that is NOT the same thing
2) black and scarlet are such an unimaginative and hackneyed combination if looking glamorous is the intention
3) with trainers?
4) I think Prue Leith has her own, colourful style. I love the big glasses, the bold necklaces and adventurous colours - she generally looks fantastic.
“Sexed up” is not her style and it depresses me that yet another man seems to equate looking sexy with looking attractive.
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I suppose just a bit of fun for her & why the hell not- but the outfits not to my taste.
I watch clips on YouTube of some of the best dressed, older, ladies walking through the street of Milan & London, wearing jackets & skirts of soft calf leather, looking smart, stylish & demure- much more up my street, if I could afford it.

I still think soft calf leather looks better on calves. hmm

Oh dear, yes!!

But, of course, male calves are slaughtered as they are a by-product of the dairy industry.

Some people eat veal too.

Allira Wed 18-Sept-24 19:49:16

I've never been demure 😁

M0nica Wed 18-Sept-24 17:27:18

The last thing I want to look in my 80s is 'demure' . A recipe for being ignored.

I had a minor procedure on my arm lasst week, I tuned up in jeans and a saailing sweater and while the surgeon did hos work under locl anaesthetic, the nurses were admiring my white trainers with fake diamonds on them.

Redhead yes!

Gotta love London Fashion Week grin

It brightens my day while the sun is shining and I can’t get outside. I can’t walk, and it’s lovely to see this 84 year old lady strutting her stuff on the catwalk.

She probably wanted to make herself seem a bit more exotic Monica.

I read Marianne's autobiography a while back. Some life she had! She had four pregnancies terminated, including one where she became pregnant by Gene Pitney. A miracle she survived all the drug taking.

I haven't read her biography, but I do remember that in the heyday of her fame she used to spout absolute nonsense about her convent education. making out it was like some strict French convent in the 19th century

She was 8 when she came the school that my sister and I were also starting at. A standard big town convent grammar school, with a sperate primary school. Mainly day girls, but with a boarding house, mainly army brats, diplomatic and the like. Couldn't have been more ordinary.

That her life has been difficult and a mess is certainly true and I am glad that towards the end of her life she has peace and security., but her accuracy, I am not sure.

Each to their own some people want to be the centre of attention. I would be happy being able to get around enjoy a nice glass of wine and decent food. That is all I expect if I live until my 80s the simple things in life.

Redhead56 That sounds so depressing. I am in my 80s and still enjoying life to its full.

My aims in life still go way beyond a glass of wine and good food. Less bothered about the wine but good food has always been immensely important to me (and I do not mean expensive food) and always will be. but that is just the starting point.

Wow, what a compelling life story, M0nica.

I'll have to find that episode and watch it, I think.

I spent the swinging 60s tucked up in bed by 7pm, because I was that bit too young, but I know just a little about some of the escapades of the stars at that time.

Such an interesting back story, thank you. smile

I didn't know about Marianne, M0nica.

She has certainly got some memories, I'll bet!

I will go and have a look online.

Did you think she would always be "someone"?

No, we didn't, she was really a very pretty little girl, but manipulative, as I said, she used her prettiness for good effect, which caused resentment. She was also academically bright and artistically gifted. It appeared as if the fairy godmother's had all attended her christening and smiled and scattered all the gifts on her. A true golden girl.

However, she was on 'Who do you think you are?' and that revealed a lot about her mother's past in particular. Her mother was an Austrian Countess, and half Jewish. It was only the high rank of her father that protected her and her, fully Jewish, mother from the inevitable fate of other Jewish and part Jewish people in Austria. When the Russians invaded and occupied Austria, Russian soldiers raped both Marianne's mother and grandmother.

It made me realise, how ungolden the life of little girl behind the 'golden' girl was and explains a lot of her later behaviour, but my goodness, isn't she a survivor?

I was watching the Rolling Stones yesterday, and pondering on Mick Jagger...

The Stones are still rolling but a pretty sad spectacle these days, as are many of the old Rockers, too many drugs and booze

Did you see in the papers that Marian Faithful has moved into a care home. She is in the one a theatrical charity run and is full of well known people.

My one claim to fame is that I went to school with her. My sister and I, and Marianne were all new boarders in the summer term of 1955. She was a pretty little girl with short straight blond hair and had big blue eyes, which she already knew how to use for effect.

eazybee Tue 17-Sept-24 07:44:57

Oh, I do agree about Piece Brosnan. Stunning!

MissAdventure Mon 16-Sept-24 19:42:59

Ah, well, you see, to my mind, Mick has still got "it".

He is old and craggy, and skinny, but he is still sexy. (If you like that sort of thing)

Meatloaf was the other extreme, but he was quite a heartthrob at one point.

. . . .Or more interesting, more exciting. Remember the ‘sexed up documents on WMDs that took us into the Iraqi war?

Stella14 Mon 16-Sept-24 19:02:57

Sexed-up in modern parlance doesn’t mean sexy, it means “made better” in aesthetics

MissAdventure Mon 16-Sept-24 17:55:24

She's going to serve her new, sexed up self on a hostess trolley, on bake off, I'd imagine. smile

Greciangirl Mon 16-Sept-24 17:50:45

Of course she won’t be wearing that sort of clothing on a regular basis.

She is obviously having a bit of fun .
And why not?

grumppa Mon 16-Sept-24 16:18:53

On reflection, Pierce Brosnan at seventy looks more like me in my fifties. Of well, a man can dream...

I've never thought he was sexy, not in the slightest.
Skinny and unattractive (well, to me anyway).
In fact, none of the Rolling Stones were appealing.

Now, Paul Jones of Manfred Mann, yes.
