Is “sexy” what you want to be in your mid-80’s?

My heart sank when I saw the headline “Dame Prue Leith sexed -up”
Dame Prue Leith has been “sexed up” to walk the runway in a latex dress for avant-garde eco-designers Vin + Omi
The Bake Off judge, 84, appeared in the duo’s 20th anniversary show, Moxie, in Kensington as part of London Fashion Week wearing a black latex dress with red stitching and matching evening gloves
Speaking before the show, Omi told The Telegraph: “You’re going to see Prue Leith like you’ve never seen her before, not in your wildest dreams.
“. Even her husband doesn’t know what she’s wearing, he’s going to be shocked but he’s going to love it. We’re gonna sex her up. “
He added that Dame Prue, a close friend of the pair, is “game for anything
Laying my cards on the table
1) I don’t think black latex is “sexy” - I think it looks tarty and that is NOT the same thing
2) black and scarlet are such an unimaginative and hackneyed combination if looking glamorous is the intention
3) with trainers?
4) I think Prue Leith has her own, colourful style. I love the big glasses, the bold necklaces and adventurous colours - she generally looks fantastic.
“Sexed up” is not her style and it depresses me that yet another man seems to equate looking sexy with looking attractive.
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I was watching the Rolling Stones yesterday, and pondering on Mick Jagger...

Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?

Well, actually, now you're asking - No.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Sept-24 15:45:07

Ah, well that's an important part of being sexy, I think.

Its what's in the brain that's sexy, not the clothes.

queenofsaanich69 Mon 16-Sept-24 15:43:12

I think she has a sense of humour ( you would need to to wear that lot)

Looks like something from a science fiction film

Perhaps Halloween came early, this being a costume selection?

Lovely woman - probably laughed on her way to the Bank.

grumppa

Great photograph of Pierce Brosnan higher up the thread. He's getting to look more and more like me!

The name's Bond, Grumppa Bond, 007½ at your service, Gransnetters!

We should be so lucky 😀

I don't think I've ever seen anything on the catwalk that's struck me as sexy.
Ridiculous, mostly, if they've got bits on show.

Not at all against leather / leather look clothing for 80+ years old but this looks like a badly fitting bin bag- not at all sexy to me!!

IMO it’s the sexy or sexed up that is incorrect, unless your sexual fantasy is an older woman fastened into in black latex with read laces. In that case, go for it.
Who knows what designers’ preferences are?
A fun costume or outfit? Yes. Fun costumes can be as weird as you like and for anyone to wear.

I guess everyone’s idea of sexy is different but Prue Leith is about fun-I think-going by her colourful glasses necklaces and clothes, so perhaps she just went along with it for that reason ie fun. The person writing about it is like many other ‘fashion’ people…a bit off the wall…

knspol Mon 16-Sept-24 13:50:12

It's just a bit of fun, don't suppose for a minute she'd be wearing it to go to the supermarket.

Polwal

As you say....she looks lovely in what she wears , very coordinated. But this outfit is ridiculous.

I agree it’s a ridiculous and unwearable outfit - but it’s got people here, and elsewhere, talking - particularly about the provenance of the materials and so on. Prue had fun / we (some of us!) had fun seeing it…..life’s short - enjoy!

AreWeThereYet

To be honest I think there is a misunderstanding here - the designers say they are going to 'sex her up' which means make her look more interesting and exciting. They don't say they are making her look sexy.

They made her look interesting enough to get everyone talking anyway.

Spot on AreWeThereYet. The use and meaning of language changes too overtime. We are so lucky to be getting older at a time when life gives us far more choices and doesn’t pigeon hole us so much. Prue Leith is taking advantage of the opportunities that have come from her higher profile and I’m pleased to see this. Whether or not we like the look, we might celebrate the fun of seeing her do something so different.

Sorry hit post message instead of preview, should have been desirable

At no age, have I ever wanted to look or be called "sexy"!

Fashionable, well-dressed, beautiful (never really likely to happen, Sesirable (had to wait for it, but DH found me so), but I would have been insulted if anyone had said I was sexy - they might as well have said vulgar.

That said, each to her own. Apparently, the freedom every age group had to dress as they liked is a long gone feature of the 1970s.

Now that I find sad - why this policing of other women's clothes again? If we continue in this way, we will all end up in crinolines and "unmentionables" instead of underpants, or in burqas! Or twin sets, pearls and costumes as tailored skirts and jackets were called in Scotland anno 1955.

Secondwind Mon 16-Sept-24 12:49:45

I’d never have recognised her - good on her for being up for it!

Rosalyn69 Mon 16-Sept-24 12:48:24

Fashionable older ladies. Esme on Sewing Bee. She’s so cool and clothes to die for.

N4nna Mon 16-Sept-24 12:39:09

Not for me…

EEJit Mon 16-Sept-24 12:34:09

Does it matter? She got paid for it.

Harris27 Mon 16-Sept-24 12:13:21

It was just for fun I didn’t think she looked great though! Leather jacket yes but that’s as far as I’d go.
