Is “sexy” what you want to be in your mid-80’s?

My heart sank when I saw the headline “Dame Prue Leith sexed -up”
Dame Prue Leith has been “sexed up” to walk the runway in a latex dress for avant-garde eco-designers Vin + Omi
The Bake Off judge, 84, appeared in the duo’s 20th anniversary show, Moxie, in Kensington as part of London Fashion Week wearing a black latex dress with red stitching and matching evening gloves
Speaking before the show, Omi told The Telegraph: “You’re going to see Prue Leith like you’ve never seen her before, not in your wildest dreams.
“. Even her husband doesn’t know what she’s wearing, he’s going to be shocked but he’s going to love it. We’re gonna sex her up. “
He added that Dame Prue, a close friend of the pair, is “game for anything
Laying my cards on the table
1) I don’t think black latex is “sexy” - I think it looks tarty and that is NOT the same thing
2) black and scarlet are such an unimaginative and hackneyed combination if looking glamorous is the intention
3) with trainers?
4) I think Prue Leith has her own, colourful style. I love the big glasses, the bold necklaces and adventurous colours - she generally looks fantastic.
“Sexed up” is not her style and it depresses me that yet another man seems to equate looking sexy with looking attractive.
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I can’t imagine there are many women less likely to do something that they feel objectivises women than Prue Leith though, I’m sure she was quite comfortable doing this, she’s her own person.

I am not criticising women, I am criticising the designers.
Also it's ok to talk about all sorts of things, such as plastic surgery, fashion, etc which impact (often adversely) women as a whole, sometimes those discussions involve individual women,

^I let myself down with dodgy feet and wear bright coloured socks and Hotter shoes^. 😝

I've got dodgy feet as well, NanKate

Fear not, trainers and socks are the in thing.

I heard today on TV, that socks and sandals are now fashionable for men!

Seems to be open season on women criticising other women, I think there's enough men criticising women without women joining in. Live and let live.

I’m with Kate1949. Also Tiny Turner, what a gal she was 👍💃

My friend is 97 and she is always immaculately dressed.

I mostly wear bright colours. I’m 77. I don’t give a toss what others think.

I was having a laugh with a shop assistant recently about colourful clothes and I told her I was also wearing fuchsia coloured knickers 😳 I think that was a step too far. ☺️

I know too much information.

House dress was a dress, usually old and on its way out, that you wore, mainly in the morning when you were doing the cleaning because it kept your good clothes clean. You might wear it all day if no visitors were expected. in order to stop too much wear of your good clothes.

Remember we are harking back to days when people had much less money at every level of society and even the wife of a professional man could only afford one or two new dresses a year at most, and no dresses the tear she bought a new winter coat,so it was necessary that her smart clothes remained good enough to be worn out and in, if visiters were expected for as long as possible.

I've only just seen this. What on earth was she thinking of?? It looks like a torn bin bag.

Casdon Sun 15-Sept-24 15:25:11

That brought back memories, my nana always used a housecoat when she was cleaning. I googled housecoat 1960s, and goodness they were garish, they make Prue’s outfit look dull in comparison.

AreWeThereYet Sun 15-Sept-24 14:57:57

Maybe house dress should have been housecoat ???? Also known as a dressing gown??

Allira Sun 15-Sept-24 14:37:35

Mother Hubbard dress designed to do housework in:

This dress looks remarkably similar to one I saw in a magazine recently, by a designer and costing over £2,000.

Allira Sun 15-Sept-24 14:34:07

Ps what is a house dress, anyway? 🤔
Is it one of those wraparound pinnies?

Allira Sun 15-Sept-24 14:32:13

Most women her age wear house dresses and slippers

Not round here, they don't!!
Of course, Prue might slouch around in old clothes and slippers at home, who knows.
I've got gardening clothes on today, will change into a little black number, high heels and lashings of makeup before dinner, of course.
Admittedly my hair needs a trim 🤔

Actually, as you like food, FrenchgalinSpain, look up Prue Leith, she's a cookery writer and restaurateur.

AreWeThereYet Sun 15-Sept-24 14:28:27

To be honest I think there is a misunderstanding here - the designers say they are going to 'sex her up' which means make her look more interesting and exciting. They don't say they are making her look sexy.

They made her look interesting enough to get everyone talking anyway.

Eye of the beholder and all that, David, but I see where you're coming from. Nice one.

This is what sexy at 80 looks like

Tina Turner was a stunningly sexy woman .. And phenomenal vocalist and dancer.

I don’t like her, but think she looks good in whatever she wears. Good head of hair and nice teeth. Trying new things keeps you young!

For this lady´s age, she looks fabulous, and is lucky with a great head of hair and nice teeth .. Good genetics ..

I think she looks vibrant.
(Not my color palette, however, lovely on her). I have never seen or heard of this lady before today.

Most women her age wear house dresses and slippers and are overweight and look horrendous and unkept as they do not go to the hairdresser and wear any good quality cosmetics.

Allira Sun 15-Sept-24 14:15:44

I'm not as old as Prue but that outfit doesn't look comfortable to wear for any age group.
I do like comfy.

Allira if I had an event where it would work then probably but I wouldn,t wear it with trainers it would be very high heels and multiple silver bangles.I used to wear a similar dress in the 80s but it was silver ,I loved it.As to being sexy ? Well isn,t that like beauty,in the eye of the beholder and I know my OH tells me I.m sexy. 50 years after we met .I,m certainly not offended by it why shouldn,t women be sexy at 70 or 80 ?

Yes, I think the trainers detracted from it somewhat, paddyann.

Personally I wouldn't have worn it, and it's not my idea of 0f sexy but I might wear the trainers 😃

I agree re sexy, that's a matter of opinion.

I love the trainers, wear many colours of Chuck's.

I agree that sexy is a matter of opinion - only two opinions matter, my husband's and mine - no worry, we're pleased each to the others looks.

Namsnanny Sun 15-Sept-24 14:06:23

Imv the designers misused the word sexy.

The design quite clearly was influenced by the BDSM scene.

Not much use of imagination or innovation.

Come on, black and red? Hackneyed.

So full Mark's for getting the most attention for the least cognative outlay.

Absolutely not!

It’s sad that you don’t acknowledge Tina’s achievement despite all the adversity she had, she could still put on a world class performance at 80.

Sexy that is not. Looks more like plastic bags sewn together. Still bet she had fun on the day, and wonder if she now thinks "what on earth was I doing"!

AreWeThereYet Sun 15-Sept-24 13:24:04

Kate1949

My point is it doesn't matter if she looks awful or dreadful. She's 84 and she's done something different and probably for her, exciting. Good for her.

Agree.
