Desperate for a good foundation

I'm 74 and have let my skincare go to the dogs in the last couple of years. Now I look like something dug up in Pompeii. I have a couple of age spots and some red patches and all over very dry skin. Anybody recommend a nice foundation? Not matte, I'm matte enough on my own smile

With foundation, as I get older I think less is more. I used to use Max Factor flawless, but found it just filled my wrinkles like polly filler! Now, after moisturising I use a small amount of Nivea tinted day cream. It covers blemishes without being cloying. I’ve only been able to find it on Amazon, and it’s fairly cheap. Then a dab of Max Factor compact foundation to take away any shine. What a time consuming business it all it!

Agree with every word xx

What a good help you lot are - many thanks, everybody. I'll be looking like Joanna Lumley next week.
Which. considering I'm 5ft and a stone overweight, is good going.

We don't need to lose weight, we just need stretching!

Anyway, moisturise, moisturise, moisturise is the key.

I have found that using Rimmel's Lasting Finish Primer over nivea light skin cream, it has made an big difference to my foundation..

Another vote for Nivea tinted day cream, as cheap as chips but I do use a good moisturiser under it, essential for me.

I’ve found a great moisturiser. It’s called Curel (I initially thought it was called Cruel 😂) again off Amazon. I have very sensitive skin and am prone to patches of dry eczema in my face, and my usual Nivea Q10 just wasn’t working. It’s as light as whipped cream and somehow feels cool as it goes on, but it’s the best I’ve tried in a long time. At first it was £13 for a small jar, but it must be getting more popular as the price keeps going up. Wouldn’t be without it now though.

I have discovered Erborian CC cream, pricy but a little goes avc long way

My consultant (max fax) advised me to wear Factor 50 every day, he told me to advise everyone I know to wear it. One of my sons is a stonemason, out in all weather, he's wearing it daily.

Boots perfectly flawless good coverage.

I like Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser. Covers well and a little goes a long way. Make sure you get the right shade, a beauty counter in a big store or Space NK should help you find it. Costs about £35.

I really like the Boots No7 serum foundations. You can book to go into the store and get someone to help you find the right one.

Nars tinted moisturiser is proving a recent success. When I go on evenings out I never tire of Estée Lauder double wear (a little).. I have noticed when I use clarins double serum my makeup looks and feels very good.

Oh GG, that made me laugh

Giorgio Armani. Expensive but lasts ages.

I wear Dr Jart ( camouflages uneven, red skin) last ages, it adapts to you skin tone.
I wear it over my factor 50, dust a bit of light bronzer over the top. I don’t wear foundation now- but double ware by ESTEE LAUDER is quite good but would mix a little serum with it., as it can be a little too thick & set with a loose powder

It's great getting a view of so many different products, you tend to get stuck in a rut of only using certain ones. I know I don't get on with Estee Lauder or Max Factor - used to always use them but skin was oily then. I do love Dior makeup but haven't used their skincare.. I will write down all the names you've given me and take the wee bit of paper with me next time I go up to Edinburgh. (high tech moi ) - THANKS! xxx

For dry skin you can’t beat the MooGoo range.I have tried many foundations but always come back to Estée Lauder Double wear.Get a colour match and it lasts for ages.I don’t use much and mix it with a moisturiser sometimes for a lighter look.

I have very dry problem 62 year old skin.
I use 100% Squalane oil in the mornings, add a good spf50, let that absorb, then use IT cosmetics Nude Glow spf40 foundation. It doesn’t cake and is not matte, I find it gives good coverage and seems to disguise redness and pigmentation. I always feel more confident when I wear it and it gives some sun protection too.

All these brands I've never heard of. Whoohoo!

mrsgreenfingers56 Mon 16-Sept-24 13:46:32

The Avon serum foundation is lovely as very moisturing and provides good colour as well. Lots of colour's to choose from.

I have just about given up with foundation after wearing it for 50-odd years. I find that they all just make me look more ‘old-lady’ and accentuate wrinkles. I am using tinted BB creams now - or illuminating primers. Light coverage with a bit of a gleam seems to work well. TKMaxx can be a good hunting ground for skincare if you’re on a budget - look out for anything made in Korea - I often find get my very favorite eye cream here for under £4. I know you’re looking for an inexpensive cleanser, but the Emma Hardie beauty balm is fantastic for dry skin skin and smells lovely. It washes off, which is nice if you’re used to using soap and water. You need the tiniest amount and a jar last me for months and months. So the initial outlay feels like a bit of a shock but ‘price per use’ is low.

I've used many brands of foundation over the years but sometimes have trouble persuading the assistant that I need a colour close to my real skin!
I'd find a MAC shop or counter and see which of the women working there you like the look of. They're usually friendly, approachable and skilled. MAC do a very wide range of foundations, as well as primer to improve the effect. When I need any new makeup I go on a quiet shopping day and get them to apply some so that I can see the effect.

Erborian cc for me, after moisturiser. It’s Korean and amazing albeit a little on the pricey side.

Fairlandia Mon 16-Sept-24 14:58:50

Day to day, I like the L’Oreal serum foundation or the Lancôme stick one. For a more special occasion I Like the Armani Luminous Silk. I’m 69 & these are all lightweight and glowy on the skin.

Laura Geller Spackle helps even out skin tones and the concealer is excellent . Her baked powder foundation covers really well. I don’t use liquid foundation, I find it just doesn’t look right.
