I’m excited to discuss the latest styling and fashion trends! With each season bringing new looks, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what’s currently in vogue. What trends are you loving right now? Are there any jacket styles you think are overhyped?

You do realise that "fashion" only became a thing when manufacturers realised it was a way of encouraging people to buy things they didn't need several times a year!
I recommend reading Patrick Grant's book "Less" The quantity of clothing that ends up in landfill due to Fashion is truly shocking and unsustainable.

Look for books under "History of Costume". It's a fascinating subject and shows that fashion really wasn't invented by manufacturers, although it could be argued that they enabled more people to be interested from the beginning of the 20th Century in this and other industrialised countries.

Patsy70 I managed to get some chocolate jeans from an online "outlet". They had been wrongly sized - they check them before they sell them.

Out of curiosity, I looked at the rings mentioned above and I can honestly say I have never seen such peculiar and ugly rings in my life. I can’t imagine any of the classy G’netters wearing one!

I like to be comfortable and stylish. Currently looking for warm, mid length, long sleeved dresses for every day, to wear with thick tights and boots. Also, having difficulty in finding dark brown, straight jeans, and dark green. I am about 5’4” and size 8/10. I do try charity shops and also look on Vinted, but to no avail. 🤷🏻‍♀️

To look your best self (as determined by you) you need an understanding of styling, much of it is about flattering the body you have. Once you have your basic wardrobe you can then pick up odd items from this year's fashion in colours or cuts that work with your basics. I would much rather spend my money upgrading the perennial items than spend it on come day, go day items.

I purchase what I like and not what's on trend.
I still wear light coloured jeans and they are out of fashion but they are comfortable and that's good enough for me.

Sounds like my bridesmaid dress and I wore it with a big smile

Fashion and styling are about expressing personal taste and creating cohesive looks through clothing, accessories, and grooming. Fashion refers to trends and styles popular at a given time, while styling is the art of combining these elements to enhance appearance and communicate individuality. Key factors include fit, color coordination, and accessorizing, all tailored to suit the occasion, body type, and personal preferences.

It is one of the sad unforeseen consequences that people having more money for clothes, doesn't mean they buy better quality clothes, but just buy more cheap as chips clothes.c;othes that seem to have the same life span as a chip.

When I was a child, the aim of the women in my life - mother, grandmother, aunts was to be able to buy really good quality clothes. Brands were desired, but brands with reputation for quality. My aunt saved enough up to buy herself a Burberry mac and she was so proud of it, told everybody and wore if for about the next 30 years.

When you bought clothes you felt the fabric, looked at the seams and checked how well the buttons were sewn on. You would have thought more money would have meant more better quality clothes selling.

I am still old school in my clothes thinking and getting more so, now I realise the environmental cost of all clothes. I am now much more selective about what I buy, I probably spend a lot less on clothes than I used to, but the clothes I buy are more expensive, and better quality - and last longer.

MOnica, I have always adored broderie anglaise. This summer I had to resist a lovely white BA dress as I wanted it for its beauty but would not have worn it

People have always been interested in 'fashion' yes, but the rise of over consumption happened in the later 20th century when individuals had more disposable income than ever before! It just so happens, that now, people can afford more and manufacture is cheap therefore unfortunately far too many of the clothes we buy end up in landfill due to the cheaper price and higher disposable income!

I admit I like the new short quilted jackets that are seen around shops lately, although I don't like anything without buttons or closures of some sort. The boxy cut looks nice with jeans.

Though since I have too many jackets as it is, I don't think I will indulge. I just returned from a three week vacation, so need to limit unnecessary spending for a while.

Skinny trousers also show off good legs..

Indeed.

I wear skinny jeans but not under dresses, just black tights.

Steelygran Mon 23-Sept-24 19:28:58

There are a lot of cord dresses around this season. I prefer the shorter ones with a bit of shape, to wear with tights and boots.
With jackets, I'm always torn between getting a practical waterproof or a smarter wool one. I prefer city dressing but have to be practical as I live in the sticks!

^Those dresses are too short for me.^

Allsorts, I wear dresses like that with jeggings or leggings.

Tights are my solution, I have nice slim legs - I like short dresses.

I am not sure that is true. Lots of reference to fashion in Jane Austen's novels, and in the 14th century the King passed laws saying what classes could wear certain fabrics. No one below a Knight and his Lady could wear fur and other fabrics and adornments were limited to the aristocracy, to stop wealthy merchants and their ladies from wearing clothes above their station.

I am reading a book published in 1830 at the moment, where an upper class lady us complaining about servant girls dressing like their superiors, and packmen and others walked the roads of Britain going to villages selling ribbons and other fashionable notions and spreading news of what the new fashions were.

Since Adam and Eve covered their modesty with fig leaves humankind has been interested in fashion and having the latest item.

All that has held them back is lack of money. What has driven manufacturers is people with far more available money than in the past and looking for ways to spend it. No matter how much companies advertise and offer goods. If the customer cannot afford it they are wasting their time.
