If they stopped making lipstick....

How long would your supply last? Just a silly post for fun.

I recently bought a new lipstick in a brick red for fall, and as I put it in my drawer I felt a bit guilty at the amount I have. I counted 16 lipstick or tinted balm ranging from corals to berry colours, tending to replace my favourite Clinique Almost Lipstick twice a year, but many of the others are almost untouched.

So if I actually used all my lipsticks I could last 8 -10 years.

I have 4, 2 eligible to draw their pension and 2 bought more recently. Never been all that keen on using it, and stopped altogether as my teeth deteriorated in recent years so as not to draw attention to them. Bought 2 new ones as I now have replacement teeth, but as they're truly awful in their own way, I still don't want to draw attention to my mouth! Ho hum....

Forever.
I've got probably 30 lipsticks and I probably only ever wear any once every couple of years

Hahaha - This made me chuckle. I bought a little container that holds 24 lipsticks/eyeliners/pens/whatever and just out of curiosity, decided to put lipsticks only in it. Shocked to discover that in my various handbags, drawers, etc., I had about 40, gathered over decades - many hardly used because the shade didn’t suit or the texture was wrong. So I gave away or ditched all of those and kept a couple in my handbag and bedroom, with just four or five in the makeup container, including precious ones that can be used only with a lip brush as they are down to the insides of their containers! I reckon even these few will last me the rest of my life, no matter how long that will be. (I’m 73)

I've not worn lipstick for over 20 years

I'd last for ever. Don't use the stuff and never did since the almost white craze of - what - early 60s?

The almost white craze of the 60s (Dusty Springfield et al) suited me fine. They just went a nice shade of pink on me!! Think I may still have some somewhere. All tinted shades seem to turn bright red on me, and the lilac ones make me look as if I am about to die of heart failure! However, I have quite a collection of lipsticks - some unused, so those will probably go to a shelter.

It would have no effect on my life as I NEVER wear it

N4nna Thu 24-Oct-24 14:27:40

I very rarely wear make up,.. think I have 4 lipsticks although 2 are the same colour. I got rid of loads as they were over 12 months old and about to get rid of another load.

albertina Thu 24-Oct-24 14:25:23

I love make up and lipstick. Makes me feel better about myself and allows me to slim down my rather chubby cheeks.
My lipstick supply would last a fair few years. Hope I do too !

Baggs, I think coconut oil would be preferable. You could enjoy the taste too!

Pure coconut oil is harder than lard so I'm not sure it would work.

I did say "in desperation" 😂

Georgesgran Thu 24-Oct-24 14:05:16

Actually SS all make up should be binned after X amount of time, but there’s no way I’m going to chuck expensive/inexpensive stuff out. The only thing I am fussy about is mascara - one to use and an unopened spare.

hugshelp Thu 24-Oct-24 14:00:56

Don't wear makeup.

Lipstick doesn't really suit me due to my Tetracycline teeth , but I've probably got around 4 , so a lifetimes supply !

I have that problem too, but you can bleach your teeth; best to buy the products from your dentist. It's not a pleasant process but it does work.

SiobhanSharpe Thu 24-Oct-24 13:05:56

Gogo59 have you tried searching for discontinued lipstick dupes online? There are quite a few sites that search out duplicates for discontinued products, including lipsticks,

Allira Thu 24-Oct-24 13:05:53

Just googled and lipstick should be binned after about 2 years. I have put my old ones in to boots scan 2 recycle. Hate to think about the waste as they were Estée Lauder 🥲

Yes, I heard that, sorry, I repeated it.

🤔 Some of the new ones I bought just aren't as good as the old ones though.

I look extremely washed out without make up.
I've bought lots of them mainly from Avon ,which I find disappointing I got carried away as they were on offer .
Revlon , which are far better .
I used to wear Estee Lauder and a particular colour -Terracotta Tile -never been able to replace it .
I also like Clinique .

I look washed out too.

If I'm not going out I just use moisturiser, though.

I read that you should throw makeup, including lipsticks, away after a couple of years as they can harbour bacteria.

At least one of mine, can't remember the make, must be many years old but what's left of it still seems ok.

Gogo59 Thu 24-Oct-24 12:59:17

You can never have too much choice! MAC stopped making my favourite colour a few years ago and I’ve yet to find one I like as much so I have loads of rejects lurking in the back of my drawers, plus the 7 or 8 which I wear depending on my mood or outfit. I find my face doesn’t look “ finished” without it.

Marmight Thu 24-Oct-24 12:53:06

I only wear make up on high days and holidays and they are becoming fewer and fewer so my small collection of lipsticks, some pre C21, would certainly outlive me!

Fairlandia Thu 24-Oct-24 12:49:05

Only 16? I love lipstick, lip balms and lip oils and have SO many, it’s ridiculous. I think they base the ‘lipstick index’ (indicator of economic performance) on me!😬

Last me out! I have about 4 lipsticks and use one perhaps once a week, often less…

SiobhanSharpe Thu 24-Oct-24 12:41:56

I'm a lipstick addict and own at least a couple of dozen, more than enough to last for the rest of my natural.
But I do have favourites, (Dior Addict LipGlow) in several shades and I replace these as they're fairly soft and don't last all that long. angry
Another is Trinny London pots of lip colour. Also expensive but lovely shades, and texture.

pen50 Thu 24-Oct-24 12:33:17

I rarely wear makeup and suspect the half used up stick of MAC Angel in my cosmetic bag will probably last longer than I do! However, whilst I don't have much else to brag about, I can say that at nearly 70 my lips are still as pink and full and plump as ever (thanks, Dad, for the genes).

Nannylovesshopping Thu 24-Oct-24 12:32:08

I have many, also mascaras, blushers, eye shadows and every possible face cream under the sun, don’t get me started on hair products, tbh I could open my own beauty shop!

Nana4 Thu 24-Oct-24 12:27:05

Good post Canadian Grandma! Good to know I am not alone in liking lipstick. I have enough stock to see me out, I also use a lip brush to make them last longer. Can you imagine Joan Collins without hers? Neither can I 💕
