Grumpy models in awkward poses

Well my notional resolution for 2025 is to not buy any clothes without trying them on first, and if they don’t look and feel fab. I plan to spend more one good pair of trousers and not 2 unsatisfactory ones, that just languish.

3 huge bags are destined for the Charity shops -all washed and folded- yay!😀

These type of models are probably one of the reasons why so much clothing is returned because it looks so different when worn on a “regular” body.
I read somewhere it costs retailers around £8 for each garment that is returned and bumps the costs up.

The models on Cotton Traders look pleasant and stand in normal positions so you can see how the clothes hang. I'm immediately put off by models who have the "I'm bored" look.

I've often thought that they look as if they hate the clothes they are modelling. Hardly a good recommendation is it.

The sullen and sultry - -miserable and mardy- - look has been de rigueur for decades.
I don’t understand it and never did.
Is looking happy or smiling considered unsexy? It usually all about sex.

Yes. I have to buy my clothes online and find it impossible to judge what the clothes will actually look like. Given that colours often don’t come up well on screen clothes buying has become a lottery.

It is always been like that. I can rememeber po-faced models in clothes and poses that meant you couldn't see the clothes back in the 1960s

I think the rationale is that if the models were smiling or laughing you eye would be drawn to their faces and you would not look at the clothes.

DH said that the point of using these androgynous models lounging around in strange positions is so that the clothes don't have to be well-cut or tailored with darts to fit mormal-shaped women.

The models don't look very happy wearing them either so why would we be tempted to buy them?

Surely companies would sell more clothes if the models looked happy wearing them!

Interestingly. a recent catalogue featured a model so androgynous I spent time trying to work it out. The clothes were tailored and tweedy; what we think as masculine but ladies dress Company.

I know what you mean! A couple of years ago I saw an advert on the internet and the model was a young blond and her head and neck were positioned in such a way that she actually looked like she was hanging by the neck and she had the most HORRIBLE face, and looked extremely miserable! The clothes she was modelling were awful and didn't fit her at all! It's nothing personal against her, she's probably lovely but if I wanted a model for something I'd never employ her!

I like the type of models they have in Chat magazine, slim but not overly skinny, there's full-figure models and they always look happy and beautiful! One of them is a fuller-figure coloured lady and she's absolutely gorgeous!

They all do it now, tall impossibly thin a bit weird looking and gawky poses, usually modelling a shapeless dress and wearing bovver boots.

Yes, just the other day, IIRC it was M&S - a grumpy looking model sprawled in such an attitude that you couldn’t get any idea of what the trousers would actually look like.

IIRC it’s Seasalt that often features a very grumpy/sulky looking model, too.
