What is the oldest thing in your wardrobe that you still wear?

I went to a party yesterday lunchtime, and wore a silk embroidered Chinese jacket that I bought in Hong Kong 33 years ago (I know the age, because my daughter was with me, in a pushchair at the time). It got me thinking, and I realised it is the oldest clothing item I own that I still wear, I’m usually quite ruthless. Has anybody else got anything you bought years ago that you still wear and love?

Joanie's vintage inspired clothes have been influenced by Bus Stop .
I loved Lee Bender's designs .

Oh Deeda, Bus Stop in Kensington- that's brought a memory back.

A wool jumper which is about 28 years old. Worn regularly in the winter but still in very good condition.

I've got along sleeved T Shirt that I bought from QS for £1.99 about 30 years ago. It still comes out from time to time. I've still got my wedding dress, which is 55 years old now. £8.00 from Bus Stop in Kensington and now about 4 sizes too small.

I still gave my wedding outfit, and it still fits 34 years on.

(We had children first, marriage was an afterthought)

Oldest coat/jacket o have is from 2000. A beautiful black rabbit fur short jacket. I wear it with jeans to make a cool outfit sometimes.

A sheepskin jacket bought circa 1970 and I still wear it if the weather is very cold.

That is so cool! Love that you kept it all these years!

Various coats are my oldest items of clothing.

Some really old comfy t shirts with college or band logos!

I too still have my wedding dress which is in good condition. It is a simple crepe fitted style that goes into a train and has a round neck and long sleeves. I also have my First Holy Communion dress which of course I would never be able to fit into!

How many still have their wedding dress? Mine is in good condition, but I can hardly believe I was so small. Victorian style, plain silk, high neck with lace, long full sleeves with wrist to elbow lace cuffs, and a soft long bow at the back waist with a train. How different dresses are now - all seem to be strapless.

A black knee length classic A line dress, not sure where it’s from, it’s winter weight, at least 30 years old. It gets little use now.

Ha! The only dress I still have from 1973 cost me a fortune, is black but a size 12!!! Shouldnt think I can get it over my head now but…… it has been lent many times to slim young things who needed something black for a funeral! It is always returned to me with “did you really fit into this dress”? 😂😂
As a PS I have a wonderful, beautifully white pure cotton night dress my gran made in 1935!

Seeing GrannyGravy13 's post about her leather stuff reminded me that I have an M&S black leather jacket that was part of a suit, bought about 40 years ago - before MrA and I got married. It's very simple, waist length, mandarin collar and two side zip pockets, zip up front and goes with everything. The lining is starting to fray in places now and I've had to put a few stitches in but it fits like a glove and goes with everything. I'll be quite sad when it finally has to go.

I have a good few items at least 15 yearsold that I still wear. They are Cotton Traders cotton blouses with beautiful timeless patterns that I still wear , on rotation, which is why they haven't
worn out.
Plus I take good care of them, obvs.
I haven't read the other posts yet deliberately. Will be interesting to see what others have.

A cobalt blue polo neck jumper bought in Dorothy Perkins over thirty years ago. I stopped wearing it when I put on a bit of weight, found it in a drawer about five or six years ago, and wear it every Winter now.

A duffle coat I often wore when doing playground duty at school. The infant children just loved doing up the toggles.

I’ve got a pair of denim shorts which I bought in a Gap sale over 30 years ago . They are like cut off jeans just above the knee. I still wear them every summer in the garden. They are incredibly soft and the denim has worn in places - Ive repaired the holes sashiko style. I’ve got photos of me in them on a French campsite playing boules with my then small children.

A classic cashmere winter coat, can’t remember when I bought it, but it will see me out.

Esmay Sun 02-Mar-25 13:22:17

An old pink nightie which has a St Michael label and a very warm out of style tweed coat which dates back to the eighties .
Both are such good quality .
I've kept some very nice clothes ,which I Iove , but they are too small .

I still wear my Everton scarf bought for me by my father when we won the league and the charity shield in 1963.
I’m beginning to wear it with pride again instead of hidden beneath my coat 😂

Calendargirl Sun 02-Mar-25 12:45:56

Cariad

Swimsuits. Now they are something I buy more frequently than anything else.

I go to Aquacise several times a week, and even though I wash my costumes out after every swim, and they are supposed to be ‘chlorine resistant’, I find they don’t last that long.

Usually buy four at a time, cheap and cheerful ones, as more expensive ones don’t seem to last much longer.

Nothing really old but I still have a gorgeous multicoloured cotton sarong bought for 500 bahts (£10) in Thailand 20 years ago. Goes with everything, washes and dries with no creases and will see me out!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 02-Mar-25 12:25:58

I had a black leather skirt made for me in Hong Kong, January 1990.

It has aged extremely well, and it still fits.

It’s knee length, with side pockets, goes with sweaters over the top or shirts tucked in.

I have a suede shirt/jacket which is 28 years old that looks great with jeans and a plain white T shirt.
