I haven’t worn a dress since my daughters wedding in 2018, and now think I should buy a dress for this formal gathering.
I was thinking of something like a tea dress, midi or maxi length. Looked at M&S but unsure where else to look!
I should mention I am due a hip operation soon after so nothing fussy. I might have to wear my trainers too!

M&S have a pair of silver trainers that I am eyeing up as they would look well with a dress. Roman and Klass have a good selection of dresses.

They really do! I have just been looking online at them.😃

I agree with others about Seasalt. They have an EBay "shop", where you can sometimes pick up new dresses (make sure it's the official Seasalt outlet) for bargain prices.

I have found Sahara to be more for taller women. I'm 5'4"and their clothes are too long for me.

Another vote for Vinted, loads of brand new clothes on there. I have had some lovely ‘new with labels’ clothes from there.

Aldon, I agree, I almost always need to get them taken up, also I always go down a size, they’re very generously made

Roman, Klass, M&S should suit most budgets.

I am unsure what to go for. The suggestions are wonderful, and I have looked at all them all.
I am not normally a wearer of dresses, and am now thinking a nice top and a nice skirt.
The problem is I am relying on online shopping at the moment. Would be so much easier to go to John Lweis, etc.
I would really appreciate any advice. Sorry to be a pain, and I did start off with dresses!

Look at David Nieper dresses. They also have lined skirts.

Seasalt has a lovely dress, available in many colours - the Chateaux half sleeve maxi dress. I think you’d feel more comfortable in a dress than a skirt and top. It isn’t difficult to return items should they not be suitable, so you could still buy from JL. Good luck!

One Hundred Stars have some interesting outfits

Just looked at One Hundred Stars. Yes, beautiful dresses. Probably more suitable for the taller lady, but very forgiving styles.

I have this lovely Adele midi dress from FatFace. Easy to put on and comfortable to wear, suits just about any occasion and available in many different colours and prints. Quite a few of the colours are reduced in price at the moment.

Tops and skirts tend to cut you in half, I’d go for a dress they’re easier to wear.
I don’t think Crew have been mentioned. I’ve bought some lovely dresses from them, they’re well made. The on line sale section might have a bargain.

Adini do easy to wear dresses - stocked in independent stores or online. You can search the John Lewis website for dresses with the features you want (eg sleeve length, colour, neckline, length). It might help you refine what you want to try on from there or elsewhere.

For an afternoon family celebration, a Hand-Embroidered Kurta would be a perfect choice—it's elegant, comfortable, and adds a traditional touch that’s both stylish and appropriate for the occasion. so please visit: selection.pk/products/fine-quality-lawn-kurta-shalwar-for-kids-hand-embroidered

My cousin has just bought this for a wedding. I think it’s gorgeous.

A beautiful dress. I hope you cousin is tall and slender, like the model wearing the dress.

A lovely dress for an afternoon family celebration should feel stylish and comfortable. Something with a flattering cut, soft fabric, and cheerful colors always works well. Floral prints or light pastels are great for daytime events. A midi-length dress with short sleeves or a wrap style can be both elegant and easy to wear. Complete the look with simple accessories and comfortable shoes.

Lovely but a bit OTT for an afternoon occasion (unless it's a wedding)
Also to shell out £500 for a one-off is IMO bonkers.
The sort of tea dress you would wear to a Garden Party is what you want (the clue is in the name)

I really love it, My Theresa are my 'go to store' I buy loads from them smile and Max Mara is probably my fav designer label - love their clothes. Can't go wrong with either.

For an afternoon family celebration, an elegant midi dress in a soft floral print or pastel shade would be perfect. Choose something light, comfortable, and elegant with a flattering fit. A wrap dress or A-line style suits all body types. Pair it with simple accessories and low heels for a complete look.

White Stuff. I’d say their customer base is 50-somethings who don’t want to look frumpy. I just bought this and love it.
