Awful White Dead Dry Hair

Just joined the forum and it looks great. I'm a mess and I need help!! My hair especially is driving me mad and I can't seem to do anything with it. Very short pixie cut, hairdresser twice put pale blond on twice and both times it washed out in 2 weeks and left me with very dead bone-white straw. It isn't glossy or smooth or anything at all, it's just a disaster and I'm so fedup. Anybody tried anything that helps?

Use products with Argan oil in them, also organic shampoo without sulphates and other chemicals. White hair is prone to dryness and frizz. My hair has been white/ sliver from quite a young age and has always needed careful handling.
After drying a few drops of Argan finishing oil on my fingers and run through gives a nice shine.
Avoid all chemical treatments and dyes.

Welcome to Gransnet,
I am a a 'sometime' contributed and enjoy the forum when I get the time. I'm sure you will too.
There are some very good shampoos and conditioners for white/silver hair, they are usually purple shampoos. L'Oréal Silver, OGX biotin &collagen and Plantur 39 colour silver, you could start treating with them and some oil, maybe an oil mist .White Hot is good too. Use a vitamin blow dry spay as well. Good luck

Thank you both. J52 My daughter mentioned Argan oil but I didn't pay attention smile
Foxtail I was using Olaplex purple but think maybe too much or too often, as it went quite a dull colour, so I didn't go back to it since the hairdresser did it. I could use it once a week or something like that though.
Thanks ladies xx

Be very careful using the purple silvering shampoos, they often contain Sodium Sulphate and Sodium Chloride which cam be drying.

Have you tried rubbing olive oil on your hair and scalp and leaving it for half an hour or so before washing it? I find Head and Shoulders is good to use after an olive oil treatment and Plantur conditioner and a nice leave in conditioner afterwards before styling. I do use John Frieda intense purple shampoo otherwise and no longer have dry white hair as you describe. I stopped having it blonded because it was just making my hair so dry and awful and started using lots of hydrating products as well as the olive oil.

That looks like a clue! My hairdresser explained to me that strong repair-type treatments based on keratin really need to be used infrequently by many of us - and then only by those with thicker, darker hair. Olaplex products have had quite mixed reviews, and a common complaint has been from those finding themselves with dry, dull, frizzy, broken hair and not the glossy results they wished for. It’s taken 6 months to sort mine out!

A short pixie cut will help a lot as you’ll be getting rid of a lot of damaged hair. Stick to regular scalp treatments with olive oil and a hot towel, or coconut oil. Really good hair products are made by Kerastase. Be patient, your hair will recover, but in the meantime avoid anything with harsh chemicals and promising a quick fix.

Welcome to thr forum.

Others have given excellent advice. Quite a few people I know with a short hairstyle wash their hair every day and that can strip the scalp of its natural oils. If you can just wash it a couple of times a week with just a tiny bit of gentle shampoo. The oil treatments are good and the longer you leave them in the better. Hope your hair improves soon.

Just an aside, but when I had to sell my DM's little house to pay for her care home fees, the young couple who bought it rang me up after moving in to say they had taken out the gas fire and found a bible behind it that was propping up the back boiler. That would have been my dear old dad who fitted the fire and used the first thing to hand to solve whatever problem he faced. The bible was totally unscathed and now has pride of place in my family history cupboard!

Madmeg - I know it was an aside but did you intend to put that on the book thread?

I've just had hair botox. It takes away the frizz and leaves hair glossy and smooth. Cost was £60 but well worth it.

First of all stop having hair blonded. It doesn't to do your hair any good, let your hair recover, the hot oil treatment such as olive oil helps enormously, you don't want any strong chemicals that will damage the growth.

Is your diet healthy for hair well
being?
Make sure that you have an egg or two for breakfast and plenty of oily fish with leafy vegetables.
Enjoy citrus fruits.
Check your iron levels .
If you are vegetarian -is your diet balanced?
Is your general health good?
Is your thyroid functioning normally?
Poor diet is often reflected in the hair.

I learned the hard way with that J52. Used it too often and hair went very dull and flat!

This might well have a lot to do with it. Diet and appetite is poor, iron is low, on steroids etc - but I'll do try and do better, ty!

letmein - over the last 18 months my health has deteriorated a great deal .
I don't sleep well and my diet can be appalling .
As a result my nails are so fragile .
As we get older we really need to concentrate on a healthy diet and exercise programme .
I have many friends, who are younger than me and I'm shocked at the deterioration in their health.
Take great care of yourself .

I have read that for those with light blonde or white hair you can use a coloured glaze to change colour and add shine.

This is very true esmay, I'm the same. Plus you get used to doing things a certain way all your life, but we need to change to adapt.

What great help everybody - thank you!! I've bought argan oil shampoo and argan oil/keratin conditioner, plus a bristle brush. See what happens now.. smile)

I use a product named Mythic Oil, it is expensive but you only need one drop rubbed into the palm of your hands and then scrunched through freshly washed, still damp hair. Then comb through and style as usual.
This excessively hot weather would normally dry out the ends of my hair but this oil keeps it looking healthy but not greasy.
