Too old for Tee shirts?

My partner announced the other day he thought he was maybe " too old for tee shirts". Now upgraded to a tee with linen shirt over the top.

It got me thinking....perhaps I too am not best suited to them? Lots of lumps and bumps, can never quite find up lift and comfort in a bra. A shirt or blouse is maybe the way to go?

Nothing wrong in wearing a tee shirt. Make sure it’s the right size! 🤦‍♀️ A lot of people wear clothes that are at least 2 sizes too small for them - not a good look!

I wear exactly what I want to wear.

Of course! This was intended to be light hearted, a break fro the horrors which surround us.

I wear what I want, right now, it's a nightie.

I recently rediscovered The Dress, having not worn one for 30 odd years.

Just a different thing for a different time in my life.

What?

You thought he was right?

You are too old?

I think you may be right.
I wear a tee around the house but not for going out, same for DP.
Comfy yes, but not the best look once older.

Sorry Lafergar I meant to quote your opening post.

Vest tops might be unforgiving with bingo wings, a good quality t-shirt is ok, especially paired with a nice, lightweight cardigan or blazer.

TBH I don’t like anything sleeveless with ‘old’ arms. Yes, you can wear whatever you like, but…

I cannot do that, Dogsmother , as the Tesco man could send for the police if I answered the door naked dressed in clingy.

It might float his boat!

Lafergar, I wish! Those were the days!

No, No and more NO! Wear what you want and be happy. I love my t-shirts.

I am 81, I do wear tee shirts but avoid round necks and go for v necks as my neck isn’t long enough. M and S do different fits so I usually buy relaxed fit rather than slim fit because it skims over the lumps and bumps.

Usedtobeblonde Thu 10-Jul-25 11:57:07

Yes the slim shows it all but I look like a bag lady in relaxed fit so tee shirts are out for me.

Millie22 Thu 10-Jul-25 11:59:56

Who doesn't love a t-shirt! They are available in all styles and sizes.

The only ones I'm not too keen on are slogan ones on older people.

JenniferEccles Thu 10-Jul-25 12:08:49

I agree with the earlier comments about the importance of wearing well fitting bras, which can make a huge difference to the look of any outfit.

As for tee shirts, yes they are fine for casual wear at any age.

I have noticed though that it’s best to pay a bit more, as even M and S ones seem very thin now.
I’ve got some probably twelve years old now and the difference in quality is very noticeable.
My nautical, blue and white striped ones are still going strong.
It’s lucky I haven’t put on weight, as I still have summer dresses from over twenty years ago which I still love, so that serves as an incentive to keep an eye on my weight!

You're never too old for tee shirts, I wear them all the time, with long shorts, and I'm nearly 81, and why you bothered about uplift, let them hang where they may gringrin

yogitree Thu 10-Jul-25 12:24:18

I wear oversized, boxy tees with elbow length sleeves. Very comfy and quite on-trend!

ViceVersa Thu 10-Jul-25 12:25:13

You're never too old to wear whatever you want to wear, including t-shirts! I'm wearing a t shirt with my favourite rock/metal band on the front of it today, and when I popped into a bakery to buy something for lunch, the lovely girl behind the counter asked me all about it and said she was a fan of them too. It quite made my day!

Elowen33 Thu 10-Jul-25 12:30:46

So many comments saying people can wear whatever they want to, which I agree with, but surely that applies to the OPs husband, if he feels too old for a T shirt then that is his choice.

I like to cover as much flesh as possible as I do not like the look of old wrinkly skin.

lafergar Thu 10-Jul-25 12:35:56

Micky, that could cause soem sort of accident I fear.

grumppa Thu 10-Jul-25 12:41:23

I'm with your DH, lafergar. T shirts do nothing for the older man's paunch and flabby pecs.

Dickens Thu 10-Jul-25 13:27:22

There's T-shirts and then there's T-shirts.

Years ago, I ditched mine and bought some that were expensive (for a T-shirt); the material was good quality - slightly thicker than the normal T, and with different neck styles. The 'envelope' neck was particularly flattering. Some of them had turn up cuffs on the sleeves and 'tabard' style.

... but they were still T-shirts.

The trick is, I think, to buy them large enough, and not to buy the really cheap, thin ones that lose their shape and become baggy-looking. The ones I bought would flatter anyone's figure I think.

The problem is, I removed all the labels and can't remember who makes them (if they are still manufactured) and the shop that sold them has now gone out of business.

It was 30 years ago, and I'm still wearing them.

SueDonim Thu 10-Jul-25 13:29:16

T-shirts come in so many styles and fabrics, surely there’s something for everyone! I won’t be getting rid of mine. I prefer v-neck and not clingy ones. I’ve learnt to do a French tuck and it can transform the look of a T-shirt from having just slung it on to having taken a moment or two to arrange it smartly.

Totally with you here....I'm clinging to my Pearl Jam t-shirt until it falls apart!

My husband wears Tshirts all the time at home, practical and comfortable. He has said though that now he 79 he will stick to plain ones, no pictures or slogans. smile

Suspiros Thu 10-Jul-25 13:46:42

I am lucky in that I am still reasonably slim at 74 and do not have bingo wings ( although the skin on my arms is starting to look a bit crepey). My summertime ‘uniform’ is T- shirt and jeans.
One thing I absolutely will not wear is jeans or trousers with an elastic waist. I think they scream ‘old lady’ at the world and they always make your bum look baggy. I actually shudder when I see them for sale online in shops like Damart.
