I need a simple solution to winter dressing. I find it very hard to get up and out some days so it's got to be easy, practical and look OK.

Any ideas?

No tights! smile

I wear sportswear leggings under smart trousers.,, neuropathy rigjt side caused thigh muscle to freeze /spasm …

I also have smart thermal grey leggings which are super comfortable to lounge in.

Long scandi crewneck jumper down to my knees - always wear a T/shirt underneath as the long jumper takes ages to dry😁 so just change T /shirt daily

I’ve just sent away for several pairs of Llama leggings. Because my weight fluctuates so much I have drawers full of leggings of different lengths and sizes and am always having to check which ones fit me. But Llama are super stretchy and I buy size 8-14 so I don’t have to worry about the fit. The only negative is that the long ones are very long on me so I have to fold them over at the ankle and, being synthetic I do get hot wearing them but I’m going to keep the news ones separate so I always know, if I go out, that I have a pair that fit and, most importantly, don’t have any holes anywhere. I’ve been away at times and found that the leggings I’ve taken with me either don’t fit or are a thin and holey. I’m going to wear them with various tunics and Ugg boots. For Christmas I bought some of their Christmas ones which made me feel very festive. As most days are duvet days for me I’m going to try to make an effort to change out of my pyjamas and sweat shirts. In summer I just switch to capri length leggings and trainers with a tunic. I did dig my thermal vests out the other day.

I can manage tights, so wear black leggings and black socks under a skirt

I am living in my Oodie which has a ridiculous kitsch pattern plus thermal top and joggers. My only concern is do I dare wash the Oodie and will it dry? Or do I buy a more sober version?

For outdoor wear, jeans, jumpers and a puffer coat plus earrings. Maybe my new scarf wrapped around my neck and face .

MOnica - your method is very similar to mine. I like things that go together so find it easier to hang an outfit up ready for the next day. I have my every-day outfits and some smarter ones if I'm going out somewhere .
If not wearing jeans or trousers I wear thick black tights (or possibly navy if they go better). I have loads of coats so it depends where I'm going and what I'm wearing which coat I wear.

^I understand what the OP means. An outfit to fall back on when your mind goes blank or wasn’t decided on the night before. Something you know will work without the bother of choosing what goes with what^
I take your point Hollysteers but don’t we all have a favourite, “go to” combination which we know is comfortable, looks decent (!) and which cheers us up? The trouble is, these get worn to death while the rest sits neglected in the wardrobe as far as I am concerned.
It’s worth persevering with looks which you know suit you, colours which don’t make you look like death warmed up and waistbands which still fit comfortably.
I do find it helps to have a decision at least in my head the night before. I often hang it of a chest of drawers nob or door handle so that when I wake up the thinking is already done.

.

OK, I fully accept I am odd, but the last thing I want to think about in the morning is what I am going to wear.

I put outfits together, trousers/skirt, and tops etc all on one hangar and hang them in the wardrobe and just take the outfit on the hanger at the end and when worn, check it over and hang it at the back and it works its way forward. That means no redundant and unworn clothing and no excess . Every so often, say once a season, I sort through, chuck/buy and reorganise.

As I have a range of outfits, I will on occasion, not wear the one at the front because I have something more appropriate if, for example, I am going up to London for the day, I will choose one of my smarter outfits.

My winter uniform.
Mountain Warehouse fleece lined trousers, Seasalt turtleneck top, Savage Island wellies, very long Lands End parka, Sealskinz hat and gloves. And a triwalker grin

I don’t like too many layers either. If it’s really cold I rely on a long sleeved thermal vest under a warm jumper or fleece. I can’t abide tights under jeans but then my legs don’t seem to get cold.
Cotton Trader elasticated waist cords are my go to warm trousers.

This is a nice thread. I’m just wondering whose style of dressing do you admire most? I mean someone in the public eye. For me it’s Davina McCall or Joanna Lumley.

hjmhill Tue 25-Nov-25 09:17:10

Corduroy trousers from Marks, a nice jumper and a scarf.Job done!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 25-Nov-25 09:07:28

RosieandherMaw I know what you mean.

I am having an at home day sorting out various cupboards, but I still have clean jeans (grey) and a coordinating sweater (grey and cream) it’s just how I am

I m in the S E, have never needed thermal anything in the U.K. all the layers mentioned upthread would make me feel uncomfortable and like a Michelin Man.

If we have a cold snap, and I need to walk anywhere I just put socks (not a sock wearer in normal circumstances) on with boots, and a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves 🤷‍♀️

Why do you want a winter uniform ?

Somedays wear a dress, others trousers, another day jeans or skirt.

I agree!
Actually I love my winter clothes- this year especially Argyll and fair isle jumpers, jeans or cords, scarves and gloves, so much more variety than summer clothes IMHO.
But I have no doubts or hesitations about what to wear just the problem of choosing. I know, First World problem!

The "uniform" was intended to be light hearted.

Casdon Tue 25-Nov-25 08:18:00

I don’t have a winter uniform, but I do co-ordinate what I buy all year, so pretty much everything works together. I’ve also got far too many coats, something for every possible weather eventuality. I layer up when it’s very cold, and I’ve got a couple of quarter zip walking fleeces I wear under my coat, as with a scarf on you can’t tell I’m wearing them. I might wear two pairs of socks if it’s freezing, but otherwise just jeans or trousers, and boots.

Catgrann Tue 25-Nov-25 08:12:16

I live in my sea salt parka all winter. It's cozy not heavy and totally waterproof. It was a good investment, and they do a choice of colours x

Uniqlo heatech layers, they have polo neck and crew neck styles. Uniqlo wide leg joggers are thick , warm and comfy. Uniqlo fair isle socks and sweater. Long padded. Puffa coat from Berghaus, beanie hat and fingerless gloves from turtle Doves. Boots from Joseph Siebel now in their 7th winter. I have my eye on a Finistere jacket - am watching the sales.

JenniferEccles Mon 24-Nov-25 23:22:44

Anything but leggings.
Monstrosities in my opinion.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Nov-25 23:04:24

It's sounding like M n S is making a lot out of heatgen stuff - it's so light and comfy tho. and the choice between the very lightweight stuff and the slightly heavier sort with a sort of lightweight furry lining is great not just to wear underneath, but as a comfy stretch top. ( I buy a size up for that, its clingy otherwise.)

Dempie55 Mon 24-Nov-25 22:17:12

Bra, pants, M&S Heatgen vest or long sleeved top. Leggings (if very cold, M&S Heatgen leggings), then long sleeved jumper. I wear a pair of corduroy trousers over leggings, and usually a gilet over the jumper, or a cardigan if my arms feel cold. Socks and sheepskin slippers. Thermostat at 18 degrees. Blanket or throw over knees if sitting still for longer than 30 minutes.

RosieandherMaw Mon 24-Nov-25 21:34:20

Obviously cashmere and designer jeans

hmmhmmhmm
Alternatively, whatever I feel like.

CanadianGran Mon 24-Nov-25 21:12:28

Usually for me:

Jeans, short sleeve t-shirt, light cardigan and medium weight socks. I wear slippers in the house.

Or jeans, long sleeve t-shirt, vest (you call them gillet), medium weight socks.

Jacket depends on the weather, as does hat, scarf, gloves. I have tons of each.
