Winter Uniform!

I need a simple solution to winter dressing. I find it very hard to get up and out some days so it's got to be easy, practical and look OK.

Any ideas?

No tights! smile

Long jumper or tunic. Leggings and ankle boots. Easy. X

Very good quality jeans such as NYDJ, M&S, Brax or anything that fits you well.
I have my favourite jeans in lots of colours.
Cashmere sweater or classic white shirt a leather belt, Chelsea boots or nice trainers.

Keep it smart and simple.

Sorry but leggings just look sloppy.

Thermal vest, thin polo neck jumper (I like M&S Heatgen), then either a wool jumper or a fleece. Leggings or jeggings, fleece lined or thermal leggings are warmer than denim and dry faster.

I love Uggs, both slippers and boots, and wear Grubs Midline boots for dog walking. T K Maxx have lovely socks.

Fleece gloves, wool hat and scarf. Usually a Barbour jacket but I’m thinking of getting a long Seasalt coat.

As I’m only seen by the dogs and occasionally shop assistants, aesthetics are a long way behind comfort and warmth!

Jeans, something warm underneath. Warm socks, walking trainers. Long sleeve shirt, jumper. Coat, scarf (one of hundreds for colours), hat, gloves.

Pinafore dress with polo neck sweater, leggings and boots.
I wear black woollen tights myself.

Size 16 here, so I go head to toe in one colour - long sleeved tshirt, jumper or both with Robell elastic waist trousers. I then match a colourful scarf or pashmina (lots of YouTube tutorials on how to tie them) with a cross body bag. I’m going to wear M&S thermal vests in place of tshirts if it’s mild, or underneath if it isn’t.

Tights, midi skirt in winter weight linen or a wool blend. Long sleeved roll neck top of some sort under a jumper. Mine today is a ribbed viscose knit top under a cotton jumper, plenty warm enough. I could add a third top layer of a fine silk vest and I could add hm woollen socks but it is not cold enough yet

Layers is what will keep you warm. Personally, I dislike leggings and have lots of woollen garments ready and waiting including woollen tights

Short sleeved tunic or dress with a long sleeved tee shirt underneath for me. Then I can layer up or not as the weather dictates.

I do wear tights though - black or blue thick ones.

twiglet my long Seasalt coat is now about seven years old. Still waterproof and snug - it has kept me warm on many a railway platform.

Flippinheck Sun 23-Nov-25 17:32:32

Bra, sleeveless vest top, thin thermal top with a roll neck, knitted jumper, leggings if indoors. Going out in the cold I add jeans over the leggings, jacket or coat, boots, gloves and if it is very cold, a knitted hat with a fake fur trim to keep my face warm. I always end up far too warm! Personally I don’t go out in leggings but if I had more shapely legs I would.
I’m all for comfort but try to look presentable, though I suspect that I am in the age group where no one notices me, never mind what I’m wearing.

A friend of mine who feels the cold but prefers to wear dresses, wears warm leggings and a warm top ( such as M&S heatgen thermal) her winter dresses. She looks elegant! I’ve no idea if it’s fashionable but it’s something I’ve started to copy - although I usually wear jeans.

Merino vest. Tunic top and comfy trousers. Boots that zip up the side probably with mock laces.
Good quality woollen jacket. that's what I want
Look at Gudrun Sjoden online. Expensive but I'm still wearing a 10yr old skirt and get compliments.
Toast is also good quality and expensive but looks good. They always have generous pockets too.

Jeans , jumpers or cardigans and boots or trainers . With a coat, scarfs and gloves when out .

Calf length tweedy-style coat, lots of corduroy, TIGHTS and topped off by hiking boots with super-grip soles. Not elegant but they will minimise the risk of a fall/broken hip.

Wyllow3 Sun 23-Nov-25 19:32:00

M nS heatgen stuff is tops.

Me: either trousers, heatgen top, big jumpers: nice scarf giving style and warmth. Good with all my sketcher shoe collection and bright matching socks.

Or - I wear leggings a lot. You can get either cotton rich or even wool mix. Bootees: a skirt and jumper or fashion fleece or dress and cardi (all with more heatgen underneath).

If its really cold, Big sea salt or M n S padded coat to for best a coat from a charity shop. More scarves (again, charity shops have loads of scarves. Or a pretty raincoat (got one 3/4 length from Next, another floored pretty one from a Charity shop.

Wyllow3 Sun 23-Nov-25 19:34:10

Oh..indoors well sorted. All day warm fleece trousers (TU, £10) and a big big fleece with hood (Amazon, £14 to £18) on top of...more....heatgen....

Then there is organising your clothes for easy use. I have complete outfits hanging together one hangar. Today for example I am wearing a skirt with soft medium thickness poloneck sweater with a cardigan jacket over.

All I needed to do this morning was walk to the wardrobe, take the hangar out of the cupboard and there was my complete outfit, no need to make any decisions about which skirt, with which sweater etc etc.

I know this way of dressing would not suit many people, but from the tone of the OP's approach to clothes, I think it is a method that would benefit her.

I can't wear leggings, for some reason they make my legs uncomfortable - twitchy!

Warm jersey trousers and a long sweater for everyday wear. I found some thermal socks, not thick, from M&S in the back of the drawer earlier this week (must order some more).
Boots. Always wear shoes (trainers) indoors anyway.

Camisole top underneath but if it was really cold I'd buy some thermal vests.

A smarter version if I was going out or a layered look.

DD bought merino wool vests and long fitted leggings last year and said they were toasty. I think they were from Mountain Warehouse. Other makes available.
You can wear smart clothes on top and still keep warm.

I need a casual, waterproof, warm cost.
Not too puffy.

I’d recommend looking at the Lighthouse website, there’s a lot of choice and several on offer.

Witzend Sun 23-Nov-25 21:17:35

For the past couple of years I’ve positively lived in M&S cosy jeggings in winter. A warm jumper and a padded gilet, ankle boots if going out.

Ooh, thanks Wyllow
I like Landsend!

Babs03 Sun 23-Nov-25 21:55:11

Elasticated waist thicker trousers, long sleeve tee shirt, and jumper on top. That’s it.
Try Landsend as already suggested, Chums, or Bonmarche.
I just bought a pair of elasticated waist jersey jeans from M&S, really comfy. The fact they are advertised as ankle grazers put me off until I read the reviews and someone had advised buying a long fitting if you just want an ordinary trouser length. This worked for me because I usually go for a regular trouser length.
