What is this obsession with wearing black in European cities?

I'm off to a different place for a change this Easter, (usually Paris or Nornandy ), and yet again, looking at current pictures, it's a uniform of black trousers, black sweatshirts and black jackets. Don't they realise once the sun comes out it's time to add a bit of colour?

This isn't just an older generation, it's all the younger people. And there was I thinking Boden items would look nice. So time for a rethink methinks.

I look like the walking dead if I wear black. Navy is ok though.

Me too JamesandJon. I love navy.

My alternative dark colour is brown or a very very dark green, almost black

Beige and related colours.......*why*!!! Even with a nice scarf.

Yes MOnica, I too love dark green . I have a lovely dark green, Toast dress I bought on eBay, but haven’t had cause to wear yet.

Never wear black near my face, but do wear black trousers, jeans occasionally.

My colours are the autumn ones - orange, golden/mustard yellow, russet.

When we came home to the UK after living in America we noticed all the dark colours people were wearing - especiallyif they wore coats... The grey, black and navy in particular. This was years ago. It was everywhere.

We both found this a blessèd relief after the pinks, lilac, purple, pale blues and brights of our time there.
We commented on it at the time.
I still remember the visual relief!

Some of us like these colours.
And some of us like the "style" too.

I can see everyday Americans using bright colours as a way of self-expression. A sort of unrestrained self-confidence. Maybe it reflects personality.

...maybe, or maybe, MartavTaurus, just another way of "fitting in".

It always looked to me that they should get back on the beach (or ski slope) - that is where these colours belong! grin

I have just bought a coat in charcoal grey. I can wear it with pretty much any colour or mix of colours and it's less harsh than black.

I wore blacks, browns, greys all winter, although I do wear a coral lipstick and colourful autumnal coloured scarves with most outfits. Now that the weather is brightening up, I'll be glad to get back into my colourful spring/summer clothes, colourful shoes/bags, it lifts my spirits 😀.

Brighter colours always look best in hot sunny countries which I guess is why the UK suits darker colours unless in Summer.

Charcoal is a classy colour and really does go with many other colours.
I also like a paler silvery grey for a dress.

I hate dark, dull colours especially in winter, I ve never worn black or anything close to it in my life, not even for funerals, (of which I attend almost none)
It’s a severe colour and to me totally boring and dull, give me bright colours or even pastel colours but black (as Amy winehouse would say) NoNoNo

I wear all black all year and have done for forty years. I am a goth though so maybe that would explain it 🖤

Black doesn’t show sweat in quite the same way that lighter colours do. It’s the reason why women wear jeans in hot Mediterranean countries.

i love black, all year round, i wear trousers all the time and they are either black or navy, most of my tops and cardigans are black or have black in them.

Depends what pictures you were looking at? I've seen loads of fashion pics of what 'the locals' are wearing in London but I've yet to see anyone looking like that. All I ever see is grungy joggers, fleeces and jeans as a rule. I suspect the fashionable young things in the pics go to places I don't.

I always wear black or navy - it makes me feel "safe" - a colour which you can hide behind!

When I was young, I wore a lot of black because I was afraid of standing out but as I got older, I got a bit bolder. Now I love bright colours.

Color me beautiful is a book written a few generations ago regarding the 4 seasons and the best colors to wear ..

I love a sexy black dress with stilettos or black knee high boots and hose and a vanilla & winter white jacket or a black leather or black velvet coat with a scarf that contains silver or gold sparkles or sequins.

Black for evening is extraordinarily popular.

Black and white always smiles at your best professional or dressy events.

Why rethink? Where the Boden.

Black has been de riguer for years now. And people seem to think it is cool and sexy. Very played out and almost scruffy.

I think that younger fashion especially for women, is very unflattering and not at all sexy.
Over sized baggy stuff.

Drab patterns and designs. Little tailoring and flair. Coupled with scraped back straight hair. And shaved hairlines They don't look feminine and sexy at all.

You wear what you want to wear, and leave others to make their own choices.

Mojack26 Mon 23-Mar-26 14:34:09

Personal choice. My mum loved black and camel no matter what time of year. She wore others too but black was her favourite
