Wearing black in Spring, Summer, Autumn etc.

What is this obsession with wearing black in European cities?

I'm off to a different place for a change this Easter, (usually Paris or Nornandy ), and yet again, looking at current pictures, it's a uniform of black trousers, black sweatshirts and black jackets. Don't they realise once the sun comes out it's time to add a bit of colour?

This isn't just an older generation, it's all the younger people. And there was I thinking Boden items would look nice. So time for a rethink methinks.

Perhaps they are all on a break from their barrista shifts!
Seriously, I find this a difficult season to dress for as I love all the grungy Autumnal colours and feel ever so lacking in the pretty Spring hues.
Sometimes make a huge effort & pop a coral scarf with my olive green, so envious of those who look good in pinks, heather & lilacsunshine

For so many people, especially older women ,black is such an unflattering colour when anywhere near the face. It makes people look sallow and bleached.

Having a naturally sallow complexion. I keep black below the waist, otherwise it makes me look as if I am attending my own funeral.

When our choir leader asked us all to wear black for a concert (usually we have a purple T-shirt), I had to go out and buy a top. I wear black trousers but hate black otherwise. So dreary and yes, it does make me look older and washed out.

I think some women wear black because they think it makes them look slim.
It doesn’t.

merlotgran Sun 22-Mar-26 10:23:28

I look much better in black than I do in pastel shades.
Pink and lilac scream ‘old lady’ to me and add years to my face.

Navy looks great against a tanned skin.

I don't follow the crowd, I never have. I wear what suits me and I love all the spring/summer colours. The only colours that don' t suit me are certain greens and shades of yellow.
I had to wear black and navy blue all my working life and swore that once I retired I would never wear those colours again.

I hate black too and never wear it. It's the Young who surprise me, this constant grunge-y grey and khaki. They all look the same and very dreary.

Does it matter what the locals wear ? I wear what i feel comfortable in . I do wear black but not head to toe . If I wear a black top, jacket, coat or dress , I wear a colourful scarf to offset the black or a statement necklace.

Give me black trousers rather than white any day.
The sight of big bums wobbling along with visible panty line is revolting.
Or as Dolly Parton said like two ferrets fighing in a sack.

I think black is "modern"?
Has been for about 10 years?

Not that I like it.

Also, as a goth once told me, that looks is supposed to signify to others, being in emotional pain.

Not sure that younger people wearing black means they are in pain?
More to cover up some, not so nice bits.

I looked great in black when I was young and healthy. I don't choose black now that I am old, and in early middle age I began to wear it only with white or something light near my face.

When I lived in a Mediterranean climate I wore restrained colours for cities and sight seeing and reserved pretty florals for the beach and seaside cafes. In Brittany , I needed to wear warm things at most times as for cooler places in the UK.

I tend to wear mostly black - because I like it, flattering or not. Most of my band t-shirts are black, but I do throw in the odd bit of leopard print from time to time. Granny goth, that's my look.

I fell in love with black in my mid teens when I saw a picture of Françoise Hardy wearing a black polo neck sweater.
I grew my urchin cut hair to shoulder length, bought an identical black jumper and drove my mother to despair because she had just started rejoicing in the fact that I’d at long last started to take a pride in my appearance.

Her hopes of ‘pretty in pink’ were forever dashed. I’ve been in love with black ever since. 😂😂

Norah Sun 22-Mar-26 12:48:28

Black and navy flatter me.

JamesandJon33 Sun 22-Mar-26 12:52:20

I look like the walking dead if I wear black. Navy is ok though.

MartavTaurus Sun 22-Mar-26 13:30:43

Absolutely, the locals can wear whatever colour they like, but the distinct dominance of black clothes in sunnier climes surprised me, especially when you have a city with brightly painted houses as the backdrop.

As said by a few posters, maybe it's down to some complexions suiting black more, but on a large scale it does seem dreary. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds black unflattering on them. I'll just look like a typical tourist in my bright Boden colours.

I need to stop overthinking this, trying to match places to colours in my mind. I honestly don't notice colours in Northern Europe, so this new departure will be interesting.

PS you'd be fine in France JamesandJon. Navy rules!

MartavTaurus Sun 22-Mar-26 13:31:44

And Norah = navy!

It doesn’t.

Couldn't agree more.

I have a big daughter. She wears colours, often a jazzy top over plain trousers. You have to really stop and look to realise how big she actually is. I have noticed this with other large women who adopt a similar dressing style.

I've always worn a lot of black .
I thought that it was dramatic and chic when younger .
I do recall a man asking my friends if I was in deep mourning !

I've worn black a lot when traveling just because it doesn't show the dirt .
I wear black a lot now because I think that it makes me look slimmer .
I do try to introduce some colour though .
Today I'm wearing a khaki and blue floral print on black ground dress with black leggings and a khaki coloured coat .
I have a new persimmon coloured coat and I love it .
The khaki coat is also new .
I bought them from a friend's charity shop.
In the summer I'll be wearing lots of brightly coloured clothes despite being chubby !

Oreo Sun 22-Mar-26 20:01:16

Black jeans and trousers are great just keep black away from your face.
Navy and grey are more flattering.
Am looking forward to wearing more colour with Summer clothes.
When you want to buy a garment but not try it on, take it to the nearest mirror in the store and hold it over you and up to the face. It’s the best way to see if a colour suits you.

I suspect it has got a lot to do with a tradition of older women and widows being meant to wear black. A tradition that seems to have held on longer in mainland Europe than it has in Britain.

Nannylovesshopping Sun 22-Mar-26 20:24:41

Can’t go wrong with a little black dress😀

Me too JamesandJon. I love navy.

foxie48 Sun 22-Mar-26 20:43:23

I've got a couple of really lovely black tops but I wear them with a beautiful necklace or a gorgeous scarf. As long as something flattering is near my face, it looks good. The colour I really can't wear is beige.
