Wearing black in Spring, Summer, Autumn etc.

What is this obsession with wearing black in European cities?

I'm off to a different place for a change this Easter, (usually Paris or Nornandy ), and yet again, looking at current pictures, it's a uniform of black trousers, black sweatshirts and black jackets. Don't they realise once the sun comes out it's time to add a bit of colour?

This isn't just an older generation, it's all the younger people. And there was I thinking Boden items would look nice. So time for a rethink methinks.

I find any trainers with thickish ridged soles grip well. Especially on cobbled streets.
I'm wearing Rieker at the moment in various colours.

I find it really weird that come winter most of us start wearing darker clothing when out, even at night time when we should be much more visible!!

With pure white hair for the last few years, my personal preference is for stronger colours- blues, a pop of scarlet or lime, white (ecru, winter white, whatever) but I also like grey as long as there is some white near my face.
I still gravitate to camel or browns as I did when my hair was a colour, but if it doesn’t “feel right” it goes back in the wardrobe en route to the charity bag !

Yellow is a difficult colour to wear when older, but I loved a yellow dress I used to wear when around 17/18 and called it my
‘Pulling dress’ 😄
I suit orange, peach, coral and any green or blue, and all go well with navy which is kinder to older skin than black.

I had a yellow duster coat when I was in my teens. 😲
What was I thinking.

Coral yes, peach, no, even though my hair is not grey. I just look pale and people ask me I I'm feeling ok!

Butter yellow is "in" this spring as are quite a few other pastels.

Oh that's strange, at Paris Fashion Week Balenciaga showcased bright tomato, lime, and purple for this spring. And Prada's choice was canary yellow, lime green, and turquoise blue for the season. No pastels.

I guess Ballerina Blush is as close to pink they will allow 😹

Maybe my Boden Brights are acceptable after all…

Yes, Boden does have a knack of getting it right.
As a nod to pink, I am wearing Ballerina pink nail varnish, I thought that was a safe bet without looking like Barbie!

And it looks as if that may be drawn from just three sources GrannyGravy. I think confusion is part of plan!

Without dragging politics, different cultures, religions etc into the discussion (!!), maybe the bright colours serve as an antithesis to the gloom and doom in the world currently.

It’s AI, some GN posters swear by it…

Definitely I think the trend is called dopamine dressing based on certain colours lift moods and awareness.

It's always good to understand what's available and there are many You Tube videos showing what's new in to the bigger stores. That helps to get your eye in but I, and I would guess many others, dress to please myself not to make a statement to others.

AI gives you the sources it’s come from, which I think is very helpful because you can deep dive if you want more, in that sense it is an improvement on googling one source.

What’s interesting on this though is that using all the sources, it pretty much looks like anything goes. I won’t be wearing canary, butter or primrose yellow myself though.

I'm one of them. But you do need to understand it's capabilities and limitations. Just like people really. You don't write either off because they aren't perfect.

I bought some, haven't tried it yet.

I like a sort of fuschia shade of pink rather than pale for a top or a dress, particularly with a slight tan in Summer, looks great and a mood lifter.

MartavTaurus Thu 02-Apr-26 04:20:06

Yesterday was a searing 27 degrees, and not a pink or yellow in sight, the length of the entire street. I rest my case. Black is worn with a passion!

Anyway, back to dreary old England in a couple of hours to feast my eyes on jolly colours in the Springtime streets! Is it sunny there?

PS this is NOT a performative, staged, attention seeking post! It's an observation, again. 😆

The Boden items were worn.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Thu 02-Apr-26 09:17:27

Welcome home, MartavTaurus. The weather may be dreary, but the daffodils are in full bloom and I am wearing colourful clothing, just because it's Spring 🌼!

Wear your colours regardless of those who don't 😄.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-Apr-26 09:38:19

MartavTaurus did you see Borden’s April Fool email yesterday ?

I nearly fell for it…

Oreo Thu 02-Apr-26 10:34:17

Boden? What was the AF joke?
I saw the tartan spray paint for cars on tv 😁

Allira Thu 02-Apr-26 11:34:38

Black absorbs heat, white reflects it apparently.
