I know fashion is fashion, and I do like a bit of artistry, but can someone please tell these people that their clothes make them look embarrassing. At some gala last night.

On my computer the picture is blank.

I am intrigued. I only know the title of the thread from the title of a short story by Gottfried Keller which loosely translates as 'Clothes make the man.'

I’m pretty sure we read that at school, during one of the A level years. It certainly rang a bell, anyway.

Some stunning dresses Notspaghetti thank you.

Years ago (and this may still happen) students of Costume Realisation at Wimbledon School of Art in their final year had to choose a picture from the National Portrait Gallery, design and make the costume worn by the subject of the painting.
As an exercise in historical research, authenticity, design and making it was a real test.
The student then had to wear the costume and stand beside the painting for the duration of the evening showcasing their work.
There were some stunning creations and the students would, of course, hope to be spotted by film and theatre designers/directors and go on to a career in the industry.

I agree that some of the creations are undeniably attractive in their handling of the subject matter.

The dresses that create beauty out of beauty usually appeal most. The ones that just want to shock don't. The ones closest to the Art they portray leave the most lasting impression, the rubbish ones are ridiculous.
Remember Yves Saint Laurent and his homage to Mondrian with his simple mini dress? Mid 60s I think. Less is often more.

Fashion evolves over time, and no doubt reflects the times in which we live. I just don't want to see attention seeking exhibitionists turning beautiful pieces of Art into bawdiness. For what purpose? There's a very fine line.

And I promise I'm no prude!

Lideeyah - surely you must find a few of them attractive and/or glamorous?

Obviously not the ones that are in the OPs initial post!
grin

Lideeyah Fri 08-May-26 23:13:25

Im assuming that these women gain by getting noticed and reported on. Personally I don’t think any of the outfits are glamorous or attractive.

Just found this lovely article in House and Garden

Not the wild outfits but others where you can see the connections.
Maybe some of you would like to see this.
I thought Naomi Watts in Dior was beautiful. It obviously worked like the 1951 version, setting the blooms against a beautifully cut plain background.

OMG! They look awful! Who would wear those?!

NotSpaghetti Thu 07-May-26 00:25:55

Allira I was really saying that a great (say) artist using paint could not necessarily be expected to be an artist with a musical instrument too.

It was just in response to comparing a fashion designer with a skater, which I thought was irrelevant.
That's all.

The one with Kylie Jenner half-wearing a dress is supposed to be a depiction of this:

Personally I think Barbara Streisand wore it better, nearly 60 years ago.l!

Better than which one?

NannaFirework Wed 06-May-26 17:42:33

I think there was a theme - but that first pic is daft !
I am getting older and more modest in thinking (often) that some outfits are more suited for underwear not outerwear…the trend of bridal wear with cortset tops is one I don’t approve of either 🥴🫣

I thought the Heidi Klum one was brilliant. I haven't a clue how it was created. She really did look like a statue. She has worn costumes like that previously for Halloween.

I think the blue toga one with the hands bra is amusing, but yeah get what you mean. Most of the time these kinds of dresses get severely toned down when copied for general production though

I don't think they will be toned down for general production. They're intended as "one off"s. This is not a fashion show.

Well it raised $42 million this year. I don't call that a flop!

Many designers are artists with true talent. Like your skater they have skill and flair.
I wouldn't expect your skater to design and make my jewellery anymore than I'd expect a painter to be an oboe player or an architect to be a gymnast.

Why can't we just allow the Met Ball to be a bit of fun once a year.

It's probably fair to say that some posters on here don't get the point of it. I thought it was fun and some of the costumes were quite clever in the way they interpreted pieces of art.

Can you explain? You obviously mean me.

Lots of us. 😀

some posters oh dear, thought we weren't supposed to say that!

I didn't realise there was a rule.

I didn't make it up and as far ad I know there isn't.

However, we have been instructed by some posters not to use the term.
Or some people either.

As that makes no sense to me, I'll ignore the post.

Magenta8 Wed 06-May-26 17:05:40

Now I have a better understanding of what the Met Gala is about I retract what I said in an earlier post.

MibsXX Wed 06-May-26 16:47:34

And to be fair, in the shots where you can see the bystanders, most are smiling broadly as they point their phones to take pics!

What a sorry sight they all are. Do they not look in the mirror. Just objects of ridicule.

Don't they all look just ridiculous?🙄 and probably paying £000s to do so 😃

My understanding is that the designers usually pay the ticket price in return for having their creations showcased.

Allira Wed 06-May-26 16:08:11

Pornography anyone?

Sleepyhead52 Wed 06-May-26 16:06:55

It's all about how far they can push the boundaries and get the attention. 'Half Man' anyone?
