I know fashion is fashion, and I do like a bit of artistry, but can someone please tell these people that their clothes make them look embarrassing. At some gala last night.

On my computer the picture is blank.

I am intrigued. I only know the title of the thread from the title of a short story by Gottfried Keller which loosely translates as 'Clothes make the man.'

😆
So obscene, GN aren't printing them?!
They appeared fine when I selected preview!

Luckygirl3 Tue 05-May-26 09:34:08

Crazy - just wish I knew who they were!

Oh my cod, I'm going to be sick!

Their fashion advisers need shooting!
It gives a whole new (literal) dimension to The Emperor’s New Clothes.
I’d like to think it’s ironic, but I very much doubt it.
On the other hand, the Met Gala sounds like something eminently missable.

The "Kleider machen Leute" gala was (I think) February.... and it's more business than gala I think...

Maybe this is the Met?

OK, so the first image you posted is a Schiaparelli.

The Met Gala.
Kleider machen Leute ist zeitlos und überall. It's just that it seems to be going down the pan whatever the event!

MissAdventure Tue 05-May-26 09:52:54

I like the dress with the hands.
Wouldn't wear it myself, obviously. grin

There are still some beautiful designer gowns being worn to red carpet occasions, thank goodness. I only hope that these abominations don't become the norm.

Back to the days when women in skimpy dress appeared draped over for cars in adverts?
No, no, no.

Unless its supposed to be "ironic and referential" which is certainly isnt, were are travelling back to what I had hoped we had left behind. when as objects. Yes I know they agreed to it and so on, but they are reinforcing the perfect available body meme.

Proof: men draped in equivalent garb aren't being seen. Now that would be something to see 🤔

Wyllow3 Tue 05-May-26 10:01:20

Women as object, not when as objects.

and I do like looking at the lovely gala frocks worn at many openings and men looking their best too.

Casdon Tue 05-May-26 10:04:33

I did admire the lady who attended proudly wearing gold prosthetic legs, I thought good on her,

Allira Tue 05-May-26 11:04:06

Oh dear, oh dear, what are they thinking!

Didn't their mothers say "Surely you're not going out looking like that, dear?!"

Yes, they are objectifying themselves. It's very sad in this day and age and sends out the wrong messages to young girls.

M0nica Tue 05-May-26 11:21:53

These women aren't dressed to look fashionable or stylish, they are dressed like that to attract attention. And Attention is Attention, whether bad or good.

None of them are A Listers, mainly B-C. and Me Too or no Me Too. The casting couch still operates.

REKA Tue 05-May-26 11:35:27

This is the Met Gala. Nothing to do with fashion really. Just outrageous costumes.

Witzend Tue 05-May-26 11:42:13

There are always OTT attention-seeking celebs at such do’s, hoping to be photographed and plastered all over the papers/social media.

As for ‘Kleider machen Leute’ I prefer our ‘Manners makyth man’ though I can’t remember who said it.

I liked that this quote was used by Colin Firth in the Kingsman films.

Well, all I can say about these dresses is “oh”

Mind you I’ve seen some fashion shows over many years with “ridiculous” frocks, I’d describe these frocks as ridiculous!

JackyB Tue 05-May-26 12:35:10

Heidi Klum looked ghastly. You couldn't even tell if was her.

"Manners Maketh Man" is primarily attributed to William of Wykeham (1324–1404), a 14th-century Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England. He famously adopted it as the motto for his educational foundations, New College, Oxford, and also Winchester College.
So possibly Colin Firths character in Kingsman was a Wykehamist? (Alumnus of Winchester)

Thank you for reminding me!
