I have a hairdresser who comes to the house every couple of months, she leaves me with enough professional colour to do my roots in between her visits. I've found that nothing else covers grey so well, though I tried most of the brands during lockdown.
I'm trying to fade to grey at the moment so gradually going lighter, the sun is lightening my dyed hair week by week.
I agree that many of the colours are just too dark, my hair was what I think of as brown until recently and the hairdresser used a "deep dark blonde" colour. She's progressed to "deep blonde" recently which is not as light as I'd imagine blonde to be, more a caramel brown.
I should add that I only ever attempt to do my roots around my parting, my crown and on my hairline, I've never achieved a good result by colouring my whole head. I have a medium length bob so the rest of the roots don't show.
