Does anyone have a Kindle?
I'me thinking of the basic model without keyboard.
How are the books downloaded?
Are they reasonably priced?

My Kindle (basic model) arrived yesterday. I have charged it but now I am stuck. It keeps telling me to connect to wifi but doesn't tell me how. It listed some wifi networks but they all require a password. How do I find out what the password is? Can I simply connect the Kindle to my Mac with the USB thing, buy books from Amazon using the Mac and then download them on to the Kindle? I don't want to use it (Kindle) for e-mail so I'm not desperately worried about its being connected to any network particularly.

Zephrine Wed 18-Jan-12 20:40:54

I'm another new Kindle owner. I find that reading on a Kindle is very different from reading a book. Particularly when I am reading a well-loved book I frequently skim down pages and my eyes flicker over both pages in view and I riffle through to find favourite passages. It just is not possible to do that with a Kindle. Yes, there are bookmarks and so on but a hand with a book can move through and around a book much quicker.

I am doing an evening class on Jane Austen and this week had to re read Sense & Sensibility. I have been reading it on my Kindle and because you eye really does scan side to side on every line I am reading the text with an intensity I havent read it with before but I am only half way through it and my class is tomorrow so this evening I will be going to bed with the book because I will be able to read it much faster.

For me, like Marti, it is going to be something that lives in my handbag for all those odd spaces of time when one is waiting around so I am only downloading old favourite books that I go to again and again. I am not sure I would want to read a new book on a Kindle.

If I were you I would start with an I pad, but then I am addicted to mine! I think it would have to be removed surgically!

Zephrine Wed 18-Jan-12 20:22:30

I only have a desk top computer and ordinary mobile and have been thinking about getting something portable but don't know where to begin. I- phone, I-pad, net book? I didn't even know Kindles could send and receive e-mails! help!!

jeni Wed 18-Jan-12 20:21:52

Ariadne Wed 18-Jan-12 19:54:50

So - I have an ipad, and an ipod, but would really, really like a Kindle for sheer ease and because I WANT one! jeni you say all the gizmos link up? Which Kindle do you have? Mt ipad is 3g...

Mmmmm...

yogagran Wed 18-Jan-12 16:19:29

Ariadne grin we've all done it. Got to make sure that it's right in......

Grannylin - isn't technology marvellous (when it works properly). Enjoy Mexico

Grannylin Wed 18-Jan-12 15:56:29

I,d vouch for the Kindle with 3G! Am using my Kindle at the moment in Mexico and am able to still get my Guardian downloaded everyday, read and send emails AND browse Gransnet...all for no cost. Its brilliant.

Ariadne Wed 18-Jan-12 15:53:24

Should have known - wasn't right into the socket! (You can't imagine how careful I was in writing that, knowing how our minds work.....)

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 18-Jan-12 10:34:00

digikidnan ... on the one without a keyboard you can change font size by pressing the seconnd button from the right (ie the one between the home button and the big square one) and a little menu will appear on screen. Scroll down to third option which is change font size

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 18-Jan-12 10:31:36

yoga - yes. Or at least on mine it comes on when it's charging and turns green when it's charged smile

yogagran Wed 18-Jan-12 09:50:41

Does the orange light, on the bottom right hand edge, next to the bit where you attach the charge lead, come on when it's plugged in?

Ariadne Wed 18-Jan-12 08:37:33

Right-try again! It hasn't charged and any ideas. need to finish this coffee before doing anything intellectually challenging!

Ariadne Wed 18-Jan-12 08:36:14

Morning all! DH's Kindle (not the latest, the one before that) hasn't. Harged overnight. I'm the tec person, and will have a look after my coffee, but any suggestions / ides?

digikidnan Wed 18-Jan-12 08:10:35

Done! Thank you yogagran!

yogagran Tue 17-Jan-12 22:55:27

Depends whether your Kindle is one with a keyboard or not. If it has a keyboard - on the bottom row, to the right of the space bar is a button with a large A and a smaller A. That's the button you need.
If you've got the Kindle without a keyboard you'll have to wait for someone else to answer your question 'cos I don't know that one!

digikidnan Tue 17-Jan-12 22:24:11

Can anyone explain how to change the font size on my kindle ?
