Windows 10 free download

I am absolutely furious, Windows 10 has downloaded itself on to my pc. How can they do this!!!!!

I was simply reminding those that were undecided that the offer runs out soon. Not recommending it.

Tried it on my four-year old laptop but reverted with relief to Windows 7.

Yes, if it works, it will continue to do so. MS will continue to provide security updates until 14 January 2020 for W7, even then it will still work, just be more open to security attacks, but as it will be little used by then, no one will bother to write new attacks.

pompa, I can stick with my old lap top which has Windows 7, it isn't going to fanish ? Windows 7 not the lap top

I have upgraded both our laptops, one is quite old. Both upgrades went without any problem and all our apps worked without a hitch. It is important to allow windows10 to complete all the pre-requisites before starting the upgrade. As with all upgrades you must back up your data first.

The upgrade does take several hours and may require upgrades to drivers etc.

If your laptop is more than 3 years old, probably not worth the effort of changing, after 3 years you should be thinking about a new one. My desktop is still on XP, it does the job and is not worth upgrading.

I didn't check what capacity I had free on my laptop and found that I couldn't download all of Windows 10 as there wasn't enough space!!
Not bothered really as I have 8.1 It can be helpful to update as you're covered for longer with help from Microsoft.

It has crashed my pc and I had to start again from factory settings. Remember to do back ups all the time (I had).

anniebach There is an option for Windows 10 to run looking as though it is Windows 7. You are unaware of it being any different, but you get all the advantages of Windows 10.

W10 takes a long time to download and install, which is why people think that their computer has seized up, when it is still busy and won't respond. The best thing is to start downloading and then go out for the day, or begin at bedtime and just let it get on with it overnight.

I had a fright the first time I tried to use mine next morning after downloading. It invited me to restart, but I thought I could postpone that and declined. Then I found it wouldn't let me do anything at all. Apparently, to download updates and download the new system, Windows has to create a new user login for itself, because it is not the normal user doing it. So when it has finished, the new user is still logged in and no-one else gets a look-in until the machine has been restarted and the normal user logged in.

You do have to go through all the settings to make sure it is doing things as YOU want, and not at the defaults, but it does take you through the process if you follow instructions.

A few of my applications don't work with Windows 10, but all the common ones do. My emails and addresses are all still there, and so are my documents and internet links and passwords.

NO NO NO!!!! Is awful, screwed up pc so badly had to pay a specialist and I am usually very good with fixing it!!!!

Windows 10 on our PC ( new one so had it installed by PC World) it's good, no problems at all.

I got a new laptop a few weeks ago so have been forced into Windows 10. It does take a bit of getting used to but I'm quite liking it now ... I think!
DH is using it on the older laptop after I accidentally upgraded it (clicked a button by mistake!) and he likes it too.

I would like a new lap top but would be stuck with Windows 10, is it possible to change it to Windows 7 ?

I'm too scared to try. My PC keeps telling me to download it and sometimes it seems to start to by itself but I always stop it! Windows 7 suits me. I suppose I'll have to risk it one day but would dread what it might do to my precious docs.

Yes, I had it for a while but couldn't get used to it so went back to Windows 7 recently. Never thought that would happened to me but I've clearly hit my limit for new whizzy whizzy tech.

Well I seem to be the lucky one then. I downloaded and installed it with no problem at all so it can't all be bad.

stillhere, yes, that sums up exactly how I felt, metaphorically.

How timely - we have a panicky DS at uni with the same problem, we told him to take it to the uni's technical dept. to see if they could help, as DBH is away now. The message read

'Windows 10 has killed my laptop
The hamster has escaped
My headphones have died
Kill me now.'

Don't do it! DD downloaded it successfully and encouraged me to do the same as I was having some problems with Windows 7.

I downloaded and installed it - and it immediately came up with a 'critical error' message. And that was that, unusable computer. DH looked up a solution on his pc, but it required clicking on an icon not present on the Windows 10 screen visible on my pc.

It took DH two days and consultation with a technical expert before I was able to revert back to Windoiws 7. The technical expert said unless you are an expert nobody should download it for at least a year.
