My friends was on Facebook. But somehow as she has a popular name, they've caused a lot of problems coz of identity issues; she's banned.

Any ideas?

I have no understanding of what you are talking about Butterfly

LauraNorder Sun 22-Aug-21 22:15:05

Never been on Facebook never will so sorry can’t help

BlueBelle Sun 22-Aug-21 22:25:09

Well I ve been on FB about 14 years never had any problems
I ve never known anyone banned
It’s such a vague thread with no information that it’s impossible to answer

I am on facebook, AC post a lot, but otherwise I am deeply unimpressed by it. I like structure and Facbook is entirely random.

Butterfly32 Sun 22-Aug-21 22:32:33

As far as I'm aware my friend was on Facebook. But as her name is similar to others with the same name, and they refused her identification; she is banned from Facebook.

Sorry can't be any more specific, other than it was a long time ago but she's still banned.

Tell your friend to re-register using a middle name or a nickname.

Silverbridge Sun 22-Aug-21 22:49:51

That sounds unlikely. There are millions of people using FB, many with identical names. It isn't necessary to have a unique name. It is the person's email address and mobile phone number which act as verification both of which do have to be unique.

BlueBelle Sun 22-Aug-21 22:55:50

Yes sorry butterfly as silver says it just doesn’t happen like that
I don’t think you can solve your friends problem after all these years with so little information and as chapeau says she can re - register they don’t ban you because your name is similar to someone else’s

Butterfly32 Sun 22-Aug-21 23:02:10

I think it was to do with she changed her name by deed-poll, and Facebook wouldn't accept the name change somehow.

I'm not on Facebook myself personally, seems too complicated; even though there are private community run groups I'd have liked to be on.

Can't stand FB, but if your friend wants to use it, then as she has had a name change, best to start afresh with a new account.

Silverbridge Sun 22-Aug-21 23:11:15

You can change your name in Settings to whatever you like but only if you haven't changed it in the previous 60 days.

You have to log into the account first which requires the email address or mobile phone number and the password. Maybe it's the change of one or other of those that is causing the problem.

I've heard of them asking for proof of name before. Did your friend refuse to provide it? Or something. She can just set up another account.

My friend provided proof of identity, but they somehow wouldn't accept it.

Start afresh and make an entirely new account. Use a slightly different name/surname/Maiden name? Easy to tell mates via text or whatever about the new ID & tell them to look our for a “Friend request “ from the new name.
Worth a try.
It’s hard to know why she was banned but I’ve a friend who changes her name (slightly) from time to time quite easily. She’s in a high profile job & gets “stalked” a bit, so changes her ID & just lets everyone know.
Seems to work.
Yr friend must get to grips with her Facebook security settings too. It’s foolish in extreme not to.

It's been a year since my friend has been banned and she's considering setting up another account.

She has tried requesting all her photos etc back, but they've ignored her; surely they should let her having everything back?

JaneJudge Mon 23-Aug-21 17:57:05

They have been censoring my posts the last few days
god knows why! I am the dullest person in the whole wide world and don't post on any public pages or get involved in anything political or controversial

dragonfly46 Mon 23-Aug-21 18:00:42

Once you post anything on FB it becomes the property of FB. You can never get them back.

BlueBelle Mon 23-Aug-21 18:26:35

You wouldn’t be able to put photos on fb without already ‘having’ them butterfly they don’t just come out the air they must be on your camera /computer/ phone for them to be shared so she will have them all already somewhere
It’s easy to just set up a new account I don’t use my full surname as my user name
FB really isn’t difficult or complicated butterfly I can assure you I would t be on it if it were and the local groups are excellent I belong to a local gardening group as well as others and swap seeds plants etc theres local history groups, helping hands groups, selling/swapping
