Buyer beware

The EU now requires a universal style of charging cable for all products, which is why Apple has changed its offerings. I don’t think it’s mandatory in the UK but I imagine it will become the default connector. At the moment we have a mix of lightening, USB micro and USB-C.

So indeed, buyer beware, though it might eventually mean an end to that drawer of random cables and wires that you can’t identify tidy but are too scared to throw away!

£29 for a cable. Apple stuff is so over priced that is I avoid it.

GS asked me to pick one up for him. I asked an assistant in Argos and they told me the correct one I needed. Of course I knew there were two sorts so I knew I needed to check so I think the thread is useful to alert others.

It’s your mistake so you can’t expect Argos to suck it up.

Amazon do however, that’s why we use them.

I assume Apple has to conform to the European Union ruling which said all cables have to be compatible on all products by a particular date.
Not sure when the deadline is but my iPad had USB C cables and it's not new - think it's 2½ or 3 years old now.

My old iPad (2016) has the old style.

I think it's good that they are now just like all new cables.

The Apple laptops have changed their leads which is irritating. I suppose it is all about money, it usually is.

I bought the wrong one last year in Asda and they were fine about me returning it and exchanging for the correct one

Perhaps you need a USB C and not a lightening cable which iPhones and iPads have used for some years. All recent iPads and iPhones now use the USB C . To look at them they appear similar but if recent purchases then the USB C that is what you want. They are very slightly bigger.

I don’t agree that the change of design should have been mentioned on the box. It’s up to the customer to research their requirements if buying from a company such as Argos.

Today, I have just bought replacement leads for personal mics (not cheap), but contacted the company first to double check the compatibility, as the original leads have changed product codes.
I was afraid to buy in case I made an error,
hence my double checking. I find it better to contact IT suppliers, rather than Amazon or Argos. Their techies are usually very helpful.
A lesson learned from my IT days, when my boss spent thousands of pounds on incompatible software, (he always knew best 😉) without checking with me first. I was left to sort out the mess and beg for a refund.
It is an expensive business to make a mistake.

Buying peripherals is a minefield. I always try to find an image of the product as well.

The Apple product boxes are sealed, so Argos won’t be able to resell it.
You have no rights to a refund unless the product is faulty or not fit for purpose.
The Apple cables are very complicated and changed a couple of years ago on some devices.

I would ask to speak to the manager and politely explain that there was nothing on the box to say the design had change and could they do a refund.

That’s bad ! I take it youhad the receipt etc I didn’t know it had changed I bought one a few months back from Asda and it was the same as normal
I thought if you had the packaging and receipt and a good reason they had to change it or give you your money back

I did this and bought two from Amazon. Requested a refund and was told to keep them and the refund was made immediately.
