Can we believe anything we see now?

I have just seen two posts on TikTok which were AI generated. The first was extremely believable, of Donald Trump saying that he knew the new pope would be an American, as he had inside information, and when he met him it would not be an amicable meeting, and he would show him what a strong negotiator is. It was labelled as AI generated, but many people commented on it.
The second was not so realistic, of Prince William talking about Meghan Markle constantly flirting with him, and being disrespectful to Catherine. Once again, so many people commenting on it, even after others saying it was fake.
Are we soon going to have absolutely no news sources we can believe?

It depends on your source Daddima

from www.facebook.com/AltUSNationalParkServiceAlt National Park Service (which IS genuine and one of those fighting the Trump regime)

"If you thought Operation Whirlwind couldn’t get any more unhinged, think again. Ed Martin has been caught ghostwriting online posts attacking judges, including both federal and state officials overseeing cases tied to Trump and his allies. Internal messages reveal Martin not only wrote posts under fake or borrowed names, but also trained others to flood comment sections and social media with coordinated attacks, coaching them on timing, phrasing, and how to make posts appear “organic” to evade detection and moderation."

If it smells fishy it's probably a fish...

Not on most social media platforms, Daddima. I’m considering deleting my Facebook account, which has always been so useful, especially with keeping up with what’s going on locally. But recently there seems to be a constant drip, drip, drip of contentious threads started by disruptive posters or by AI, leading to people (or bots) arguing amongst themselves, throwing in stupid “facts” they either believe or claim to believe, insulting one another. Leading to so much racism, xenophobia, and other blatant prejudice. It’s bringing out the worst in many people and it’s depressing.

I know, but my point was that now there are posts which appear to show the people actually saying things, and I just wonder how far it’s going to spread. I think it was Elon Musk who said that soon we will get all our news from social media ( he would!) and I just think AI being used in this way must be a bad thing. So far, most of these things I’ve seen look to be aimed at Americans, who seem to believe they are real. Poor Camilla is a target, with posts showing Princess Anne and Prince William saying they are going to ‘crush her’.
I’ll have to start looking at more music and recipe posts so my algorithm stops sending me the Trump and royal family ones.

You dont need AI to dream up lies the gutter press do it all the time, fake photos and videos are a different matter, currently a modified image can be exposed, I’m sure AI will make them more convincing.

All you need to do is restrict your news coverage to the reputable main stream news sources - BBC, Sky, national newspaper sites.

So you believe all the stories in the national news papers.

The BBC is horrendous, it has fallen so far.

On the adfontes Media Bias Chart at scontent.fgla3-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/486600164_1066228138858936_3056161940602315782_n.jpg the BBC appears in the middle of the "Mix of fact reporting analysis and simple fact reporting" section.

Adfontes say "Our methodology requires that each article is rated by three trained analysts: one left-leaning, one right-leaning, and one center. A random sample of articles from a particular source is analyzed, and the weighted average of those articles determines where the source falls on the Media Bias Chart®"

You don’t have to go further than this site. There are numerous OPs that are obviously AI generated but members believe every word.
As for videos, I comment on them but realise it’s pointles.
I point out the faults in them but people believe what they want to believe 🤷‍♀️

I still listen to the BBC Galaxy.
It's not perfect but at least not AI generated.
I added to a money thread on GN last night which I've since been told is AI generated.
It looked genuine to me so how can you even tell?

sodapop Sun 11-May-25 09:06:34

Sadly the BBC is no longer a reputable news sourcec due to its biased reporting.

Grammaretto Sun 11-May-25 09:09:21

Most of my friends no longer listen to or watch the news.
Maybe I should follow their example!

When my DM was very old she stopped any interest in "the news"
She still managed to hear about current affairs because her visitors and carers would keep her in the loop.
So when Charles married Camilla for example, she commented that Diana hadn't been all that long in her grave....

If you watch The Capture - on the BBC iplayer - it illustrates how deepfake can falsely portray people in power.

Homestead62 Sun 11-May-25 11:23:15

I don't believe much of what is online. Since Facebook got rid of the ' Factcheckers' it's now horrendous with utter crud. I don't spend much time online at all.

Everyone should watch The Capture.
Would I say it’s never been used 🤔 let me think. 😉

First clue, they are looooong posts.
Second clue, always a weird user name.
Third clue, Allways about family problems
And the clincher, paragraphs and perfect punctuation.

Regular posters have recently been accused of being Bots, it's incredibly rude and dismissive when certain posters seem to think they can identify bots (then do do wrongly). Paranoia jumps to mind. The posters that do this never apologise.

Delila Sun 11-May-25 13:19:16

I think if some of these posts are AI generated they are possibly being used for training purposes, as the AI bot can gain valuable experience from dialogue with humans.

Elegran Sun 11-May-25 17:10:45

Is that because you see their designers and programmers as philanthropic benefactors whose sole motive is to increase the sum of happiness in a Utopian world where everyone can spend most of their time at leisure pursuits and enjoying life with their familes, and no-one needs to work more than an hour or two a day to earn enough because AI will increase their productions levels, efficiency and profitability?

Many people see an alternative future, where AI makes production so much more efficient that the humans in charge of supervising them can't keep up with their activities. Unless their minders are exceptionally technically minded, they might not completely understand how they work and in what areas they are likely to malfunction, let alone be aware of deliberately introduced malfunctions which could turn the products into spies in every home.

Those of us who have Siri or Alexa already have a nagging suspicion that they could be reporting to MI5 anything they hear which could be planning insurrection. The situation in the States just now shows how dangerous it could become to criticise the regime or to insist on due process in federal dealings with legal or judicial matters.

Not me. When it’s a post that looks a bit off key I do a search 😊
