I have just acquired and Echo Dot and it is mostly functioning as a better speaker for music from spotify. And it will play The Archers when I ask.

Tell me what I can do with it please! - what do you find the most useful things?

My husband uses it to remind him to take his tablet at 8pm.

We use ours every day frequently . You can set it to remind you of an appointment weeks away ( we set it to tell you at breakfast time ) . We do not use a radio at all just Alexa and my son shares his Spotify membership so loads of classical music for free. My very favourite thing is to use it at bedtime to read any book I have on Kindle or , when I have a membership , from Audible . If I waken in the night I do not have to put on a light just ask her to read my book and I set a sleep timer in case I fall asleep and miss too much.
To-day with family someone said he thought he heard a fox in their garden making a stange noise. We asked Alexa what sound a fox makes and she imitated it . When I am composing any kind of written work I jusr ask her how to spell a word and there it is . I love her .

Dh uses a bedroom one to play sleep sounds to override his tinnitus which was keeping him awake.

We have then in every room except the bathroom. I use ours to listen to the radio, get a weather forecast, shopping list, spellings. I also ask for language translations, recipes, cooking timings.
Look on the Alexa app for skills, there are loads of things to try. Sleep sounds is good if you have trouble falling asleep.

But you can do all that on an iPad !

We have three which enables me to add to my shopping list wherever I am in the house. We also use them for radio listening, weather forecasts, traffic reports and as timers.

I ask mine to sing to me and she does. Quite funny songs sometimes.

I use Alexa as a timer mainly when cooking as I settle into my iPad and tend to forget what I have left on our crazy hob. The kitchen is quite far away. I ask her the time in Portland, Oregon before I contact my old friend.

I listen to all my favourite golden oldies...

Madmeg Sun 15-Jun-25 01:47:03

She tells me when parcels are due from Amazon. If you ask "Alexa, are there any announcements?".

BlueBelle Sun 15-Jun-25 05:29:47

Catterygirl but you could just set the timer on your iPad
🤣🤣 how funny

kittylester Sun 15-Jun-25 07:29:51

I don't have an iPad, Bkuebelle, can you just say 'set a timer for 10 minutes' or do you have to find an app and press buttons?

travelsafar Sun 15-Jun-25 07:46:08

I have 2,one in kitchen the other in bedroom. I love them. Alarms, radio, stories, music....anything really. I'd be lost without them.😊

BlueBelle Sun 15-Jun-25 08:17:23

I was answering Catterygirls message Kittylester but in answer to your query yes you can just ask it to alarm you at such and such a time and the alarm will go off so yes you can talk to the iPad and it talks back 🤣🤣🤣
I was just interested as I don’t know anyone with an Alexa to ask None of my family or grandkids or friends have one and I wondered what I was missing but I don’t think I am missing much I can listen to music can ask it to find out most things from bus times to addresses, ask it to set an alarm for me listen to stories listen to radio and it’s easily portable in my hand to any room so I cant imagine that I d need anything more unless Alexa can make a cup of coffee 🤣

kittylester Sun 15-Jun-25 08:32:59

I am surprised you don't know anyone with an Alexa, Bluebelle. I can only think of 2 people in my circle who don't have one. They are both older - all the younger people j know have one.

Cherrytree59 Sun 15-Jun-25 08:50:49

Alexa also gives flood warnings in local areas.

Gin Sun 15-Jun-25 08:57:34

I use mine all the time, it plays radio programmes I have missed and tells me stories. I find mine so useful, I bought my friend one but her 40 year old daughter will not allow me to connect it as ‘they are listening to her’. I don’t know if she imagines little men in their thousand in underground rooms listening to the millions of users. It is true Alexa is using your choices to provide information about you but so do your iPad and internet usage of any kind.

I have a 'google nest speaker' . I now have an alexa with screen so I can be video called by family up country from me.

BlueBelle Sun 15-Jun-25 09:09:34

No Kitty not a soul and I have lots of younger friends and all my grandkids are in their 20 s all use their iPhones or iPads for everything I m not being awkward I simply don’t have any friends or family with an Alexa
(And even that last post from lemsip I video call my kids and friends on my iPad )
I was just curious as to what I could need one for ?

BlueBelle Sun 15-Jun-25 09:13:44

Yes Gin I was looking up vacuum cleaners yesterday as need a new one and want to go cordless today my fb is flooded with adverts for cordless vacuum cleaners 🤣🤣🤣
They are listening these little men

harrysgran Sun 15-Jun-25 09:53:26

I use mine everyday for the radio, Spotify, a timer, the weather my GS listens to sleep stories as do I or sleep music

WhiteSwan63 Sun 15-Jun-25 09:54:46

We use the Alexa in the dining room to switch the lamps on and off as the plugs are hard to reach and to play music. The one in the bedroom notifies us if someone is at the front door via the ring doorbell. The Granddaughters love asking for their favourite songs to dance to. But we probably don’t use it to its full potential.

Grandmabatty Sun 15-Jun-25 11:13:22

Slight derail, my Alexa routine I set up to put the light on no longer works. The light will come on to voice activation and if I press the appropriate button but not automatically. Does anyone have any idea what I can do?

Sparklefizz Sun 15-Jun-25 17:54:03

Can you ask Alexa to call you an ambulance if necessary?

Luckygirl3 Sun 15-Jun-25 18:10:45

Just looked it up .... can't ring 999.
