I have just acquired and Echo Dot and it is mostly functioning as a better speaker for music from spotify. And it will play The Archers when I ask.

Tell me what I can do with it please! - what do you find the most useful things?

Listen to Boom radio, set timers for when bread is ready, ask what the weather is going to do etc etc. Also regularly ask if she is spying on me but no definite answer to this one!!

If I've mislaid my phone I ask Alexa to call it. I'm not worried about it listening in, just mundane, everyday life is spoken of in this house. In the Alexa app on your phone you can delete all your conversations.

Oh dear!!!! Same here but living happily at age 84. probably will ever have one unless I'm gifted one.

It’s not just Alexa listening. I assume all of you are using a smart phone.
Who was listening before Alexa came into being? Your phone, your tablet 😉

Alexa definitely does listen in, though. I was having a discussion with a tradesman in the room next door to the Alexa when she suddenly joined in the conversation!!! Yikes!

Can you ask Alexa to call you an ambulance if necessary?

You can ask it to call an emergency contact. Odd that there are regulations in place that will not allow it to call 999.

People abuse the 999 service enough as it is, it would collapse if you could call on Alexa.

I was answering Catterygirls message Kittylester but in answer to your query yes you can just ask it to alarm you at such and such a time and the alarm will go off so yes you can talk to the iPad and it talks back 🤣🤣🤣
I was just interested as I don’t know anyone with an Alexa to ask None of my family or grandkids or friends have one and I wondered what I was missing but I don’t think I am missing much I can listen to music can ask it to find out most things from bus times to addresses, ask it to set an alarm for me listen to stories listen to radio and it’s easily portable in my hand to any room so I cant imagine that I d need anything more unless Alexa can make a cup of coffee 🤣

Same here BluewBelle. Two of our family who are in the telecom business loved it at first- but they have chosen notto use them anymore due to concerns about privacy.

I truly value my independence and silence too (bliss after a teaching career) and would not wish to have Alexa sharing my house. Each to their own and glad to hear some enjoy it.

That was my next suggestion. Hope it works.

Grandmabatty Sun 15-Jun-25 18:41:55

I tried that Kitty but no luck. I've reinstalled the app so hopefully it'll work tonight. Thanks though

Slight derail, my Alexa routine I set up to put the light on no longer works. The light will come on to voice activation and if I press the appropriate button but not automatically. Does anyone have any idea what I can do?

There is a help section on the app that I have used once or twice, GBatty.

Thanks Lucky

Just looked it up .... can't ring 999.

We use the Alexa in the dining room to switch the lamps on and off as the plugs are hard to reach and to play music. The one in the bedroom notifies us if someone is at the front door via the ring doorbell. The Granddaughters love asking for their favourite songs to dance to. But we probably don’t use it to its full potential.

harrysgran Sun 15-Jun-25 09:53:26

I use mine everyday for the radio, Spotify, a timer, the weather my GS listens to sleep stories as do I or sleep music

BlueBelle Sun 15-Jun-25 09:13:44

Yes Gin I was looking up vacuum cleaners yesterday as need a new one and want to go cordless today my fb is flooded with adverts for cordless vacuum cleaners 🤣🤣🤣
They are listening these little men

BlueBelle Sun 15-Jun-25 09:09:34

No Kitty not a soul and I have lots of younger friends and all my grandkids are in their 20 s all use their iPhones or iPads for everything I m not being awkward I simply don’t have any friends or family with an Alexa
(And even that last post from lemsip I video call my kids and friends on my iPad )
I was just curious as to what I could need one for ?

lemsip Sun 15-Jun-25 08:58:48

I have a 'google nest speaker' . I now have an alexa with screen so I can be video called by family up country from me.

Gin Sun 15-Jun-25 08:57:34

I use mine all the time, it plays radio programmes I have missed and tells me stories. I find mine so useful, I bought my friend one but her 40 year old daughter will not allow me to connect it as ‘they are listening to her’. I don’t know if she imagines little men in their thousand in underground rooms listening to the millions of users. It is true Alexa is using your choices to provide information about you but so do your iPad and internet usage of any kind.

Cherrytree59 Sun 15-Jun-25 08:50:49

Alexa also gives flood warnings in local areas.

kittylester Sun 15-Jun-25 08:32:59

I am surprised you don't know anyone with an Alexa, Bluebelle. I can only think of 2 people in my circle who don't have one. They are both older - all the younger people j know have one.

I have 2,one in kitchen the other in bedroom. I love them. Alarms, radio, stories, music....anything really. I'd be lost without them.😊
