Memory full, Windows 11

I may not be using the correct words, but I keep getting messages telling me to free up (disk?) space. It points me to System security etc and brings up pages full of 'updates'. I think I'm supposed to delete some of these to make more space.
How on earth do I know which ones to get rid of?
(I'm an 87 year old with the brain of a flea)
I have a very old samsung galaxy go - (not pro)
There must be loads of rubbish which can be deleted - but how do I recognise it?
Can that list of updates all be deleted?

I’d get advice from someone who understands all this otherwise it could make you stressed. Also you might delete the wrong thing. It’s not worth trying to understand this sort of thing as technology is advancing at such a pace so leave it to those who know. You are not alone as few of my contemporaries understand computers.

Do you clear your history? Your phone will be storing everything you have ever clicked onto on the web.
If thats a yes, here is a video to help. Don’t worry, it’s easy.

Petra
I think the Samsung Galaxy go is a type of chrome book.

Could be wrong

Yes its a tablet, not a phone Notspaghetti, but Petra's advice sounds sensible so I'm going to attempt it now.
Thanks

Yes, history cookies etc take up too much space.
🤞

Allira Tue 17-Jun-25 12:10:44

Are there three dots in the top right hand corner of the screen?

If so, click on them, go to History and it will bring up a list of browsing history, cookies and site data, cached images and files etc. Tick those you want to delete, then click on delete browsing data. If there is a lot to delete, it could take some time.

🤞 that might help.

Keep the newest or two newest updates and delete the rest.

Sorry about that , distracted myself.

My phone is definitely not a tablet, and it is a Samsung Galaxy!

Clear all browsers & delete all browsing history & cookies at least weekly (you will have to login to sites after doing this), any photos or pictures take up a lot of memory so delete or put them on the cloud or a memory stick . Hope that helps.

I forgot to mention Apps. Do you have a lot? If yes, delete what you don’t really need ( you don’t actually need them)
They use a lot of memory and a lot of battery power because they are working all the time collecting your searches.

You don’t have to sign in every time. Just put a favourite on your reading list. Click that and you’re in.

Allira - that was really helpful - I had a look but have no idea about the vocabulary used. "Synced data" sounds like a waste disposal unit! What does "cached" mean? That sounds like something you do with a cheque! Should I get my computer man in or just leave everything to build up?

Fae1 Tue 17-Jun-25 15:08:45

Take it to a professional. Bought mine in Tesco and they have a brilliant, helpful and free service for this sort of thing.

It can be a scam, I have a Mac and keep getting emails to say my memory is full they want to sell you something it help your clear your memory , mine is nowhere near full. As someone else said Tesco staff are brilliant at helping even if you have not purchased anything from them.

If you have a laptop, I'sd suggest defragging your hard drive.

FranP Tue 17-Jun-25 20:06:23

Try using your file search for .tmp. Sort into date order, select all, and delete anything over a month. Also some searches allow ~. but not all of this can be deleted.

Not sure if you have a command prompt like a laptop, but if you have, type in the word defrag and follow the instructions

Well, the 'reminders' have stopped, so something must have worked.
Thanks for the help everyone I'll settle for the status quo.

cached means it'ssaved and hidden for future use, I think, so sites can be accessed more quickly.

Do try deleting your history, at least the browsing data, as that could speed things up a bit.

I'll just refresh my memory on how to check how much memory you have left.

Allira Thu 19-Jun-25 23:29:02

If yours is similar to mine:

Go to the Samsung icon on the home screen
Settings
Device Care

If should tell you how much storage space you have used.
I've used about a quarter of mine.
There is also a link there to the memory so you can check and clean that up.

ExDancer Sun 22-Jun-25 21:40:09

My tablet is a Samsung GO not a Samsung GALAXY. The 'go' was cheaper than the 'galaxy'.

DrWatson Fri 27-Jun-25 02:54:22

For the OP. Take it to a phone or computer shop. Get them to fix it, and write down for you what you need to do on a regular basis. Feasibly a much younger relative may well be able to do this for you?!
